The Diary

April 1 1874 Wednesday

            Cold & stormy  at home forenoon writing to J.M. Estep for Edward  after noon to Cortryht Franklin  Dan choping wood till dinner  Ed in the house with me_  After dinner Ed & Dan went out to haul rails & stuff off of corn  drove oxen  Mary & Fred went to Bowerston to Wom League  Mandy to sarahs  I here alone at dark I started for Leesburgh  there all night with Robert

 

April 2 1874 Thursday

            A fine cool day  Robert & I started early to Carrolton  got advise  come back by James Trips where we supped  after getting home I went over to Hagerstown and back to Leesburgh cauling with J. H. Stephenson_  Edward said he was plowing in corn stubble  Dan was harrowing sod back of Phillips with oxen  Robert expenses in Carrolton at Mrs. Stephensons & Magus  for horse feed $1.25 if not more

 

April 3 1874 Friday

            In Leesburgh with Robert  up early and started in prines Bugy there own roan team taking J.H. Stephenson to meet James Trip my bondsman as assim in Roberts  Cash of Assignment_  Traveling expences for 3 dinners in Carrolton at Mrs Stevenson $1.10  left 3 1/2 oclock and home at dark_  Ed said he was plowing  Dan harrowing oxen_  I supped & lodged with Robert and left for home before day.

 

April 4 1874 Saturday

            Home this morning before breakfast  quite a skift of snow in ground_  Shaved  wrote letter to Courtright and made made these entries so far  Mailed letter to Courtright in Franklin_  After early dinner went to Perryville thence to Hagerstown & Leesville Supped with Theadore and home after night  rode bay horse  Forenoon Ed & Dan hauld elm stump out of Orchard_  After dinner Ed plowed & Dan harried with oxen

 

April 5 1874 Sunday

            After cleaning up rode Coon Mare to Perryville & back before dinner  at home bal of day  a cold raw day  changed  warmer & rained a little in evening  Mandy started home after breathern meeting was out  quite late

 

April 6 1874 Sunday

            Up early  went to Leesburgh before breakfast  met Robert on the way east of Rowleys to meet me  after I arrived took possession of the store but did not close it_  Notified him & Barrick as praisers_  Election day  some excitement_  (Crossed through: Theadore went to Mastervill forenoon with black mare)

 

April 7 1874 Tuesday

            Up early  fine day although looked like rain early_  Theadore went to Mastersville forenoon black mare  Appraisers not on hand till after 10 oclock  sworn in after 11 oclock by Wm Steurer J.P._ Commenced work a few minutes before dinner  Invoiced in all over $650.00 worth

 

April 8 1874 Wednesday

            A dry cold day  praising notions showcase shoos and (promisce ous) articles

 

April 9 1874 Thursday

            Cold raw drisley day  began snowing in after noon  increased and snowed all night_  Apraising the peice goods most all day_  Then groceries & celler goods and things up stairs_  It thundered and lightened late in evening while snowing_  appeared strange to the citizens_  sold 17 bus potatoes to a Mr. Crawford of Jefferson County for $19.20/100 Piquant Hatts

 

April 10 1874 Friday

            A heavey snow 6in deep  snowed all night_  H.Custer  L Hunt  Lu Barrick here till noon  quit at 10 clock

            Ed & Dan here  got 20 bus cole  I got for Dan 3 1/4 yds Blea Muslin  spo buttons Lni boson 1 box collars and 1 large plug Tobacco_  Crawford had his potatoes taken this morning by Watts team

 

April 11 1874 Saturday

            Cold and raw  Considerable trade  Robert seemed ingaged selling with J. Boyd Easterday & some others  I watched round all day close but done nothing amounting to anything_  Theadore took Josephs wife and children to Bowerston on their way to Jefferson County

 

April 12 1874 Sunday

            (Writen top of page:  Dan To Cash for give Sabath School asked for 25cts gave him -z cts)

            A cold frosty morning_  I at home all fore noon fixing cleaning up & changing clothes to start for Carrollton_  started after 2 oclock pm  arived at Thomas Brooks two miles this side where I stayed all night

 

April 13 1874 Monday

            A cold frosty morning  left T. Brooks 7 oclock AM  in Carlton 8am

Law inquires answered_  left for Leesville after 9AM  arived 12:30 dined w Theadore_  Edward here got 2 bus peach (blows) 1 3/4 early rose  left 3 1/2 verry inferior mixed potatoes_  got 11 bus rye all unsettled for  Ed started home with Fred and his barrow  I remaining here in Leesville

 

April 14 1874 Tuesday

            (Crossed out:  "A fine mild morning looking rainey  appraisors on hand convened about 9 oclock up stairs over storeroom")

            Looks like clearing up Thead. & J. Johnson starts Chapman to buy Eggs & Butter  I advanced cash $25.00  I advanced $3.50 to buy spool cotton  a dull day in store  onley soled about $10.00 in all_ Theadore went in afternoon to D. Weyandts & to Masterville for my bank book, not back till dark

 

April 15 1874 Wednesday

            (Written top of page: Mandy Barns $7.30)

            A fine mild morning  looking rainey  appraisors on hand conveined about 9 oclock up stairs over store room  Mandy Barns come here  brought letter from Mary requesting advise about Doc Stone case  given as well as I could_  Mandy To good as for bill rendered $4.80 To Cash per Theadore 2.50 which I handed to him taken out of store fund  All the accounts on the books of store gone over to day

 

April 16 1874 Thursday

            A fine spring morning  a little coole  Wm Chapman started to look up but & eggs for J. Johnson & Theadore  did not get much and out till night_

            The appraisors transfering invoice on probate judges inventory H. Custer principal worker and done nearly all the work any how_ Barrick was counting up some interest for me on the H.T. Simonton recept  so went the day and appraisors not trough till after supper or nearly night  Oglibays son here from Wheeling  blustering consideralbly

 

April 17 1874 Friday

            A dull day  treathening rain forenoon  cleaned up in after noon  W. Beall of Choshocton here  some threatining but seemed to go away in better houmer_  but little done in the way of selling goods_ late in eve I shaved myself to start to Carrollton early in the morning_  W. Hunt returned home from Carlton  come into the store room & up stayrs over store & told Rob he wanted to borrow $125 or $150.0 dols for some 5 or 6 days which I made arangement for Theadore to give him

 

April 18 1874 Saturday

            Coldish & rough  I started Carlton 7 oclock A M  arived after 10 A M  put mare up McGuires feed .25  I dined with Mrs Atkinson .40 did my business as far as I know  principal amend taking up Inventory  started home about 3 oclock PM in company with H. Custer as far as Brooks on top hill south Pitsburgh to Leesville about 6 PM then went to Masterville

 

April 19 1874 Sunday

            At home all day, a mild warmish day  Ed went to Perryville to meeting  Dan to prayer meeting  R.H. Smith up about middle of day  Mandy rode Ike horse home & back in eve_  looked like rain & turned out to be a wet night_  I some unwell  I wet night

 

April 20 1874 Monday

            A wet morning but mild & warm  I left home for Leesburgh 9 oclock  turned out quite warm  a tolerable day in store considering the way things are_  at night wrote a letter to Judge McCoy_  In evening sharp thunder & turned in cold

 

April 21 1874 Tuesday

            A cold raw Cloudey morning  commenced to investigate my account  James Trip & F. Johnson come in to learn of Joseph Johnson prospect of purchasing stock of goods  went away without any conclusion  Joseph Johnson went to Hagerstown himself after

 

April 22 1874 Wednesday

            S. Martin by  4 removes on Coley & put old Mattock in better shape which he sported when he (steeled) it

            A cloudy day forenoon but cleared up and got more pleasant quite dull in town  I done nothing but sat round looked over my account  Robert discovered another loan of four hundred dollars given him at home in Masterville in July 25th 1872 which I included in my account  Theadore shipped some butter & eggs and went after diner for load posts for (stine)? to Bakers

 

April 23 1874 Thursday

            Busey all day makeing out my account again F.T. Simonton & R.H. Smith  Theadore went up to Mastersville for chaff  Joseph Johnson went home this evening_  Miller Green & Joice of Columbus was here to day and was verry inqusitive intimated I was not fit for assinee etc

 

April 24 1874 Friday

            (Written top of page: 9431.25)

            Went to Carlton this morning 7 1/2 oclock  put in my account in report  debts amounting to $9431.25  expences first for government stamps to put on notes 1.00 bill  for our dinners at McGuires 1.50

left for Leesville 4 oclock PM  arived 7 10 minuts makeing 3 hours from Carlton to Leesville steadey riding (a distance of about 15 miles)

 

April 25 1874 Saturday

            In Leesburgh all day and rained  I went home late, a dull day in store  little done

 

April 26 1874 Sunday

            At home all day  dull and muddy high water  creek too deep to ford to salt the sheep

 

April 27 1874 Monday

            Come to Leesburgh soon after breakfast by J. Lyons place_  A fine clear day & good in the store for all  it looked discouraging first in the morning  Took cash & trade to ampt of $78.50

 

April 28 1874 Tuesday

            A frieghtful snowey morning when I got up, Joseph Johnson had been up early and shipped 2 Keggs butter before I was up  shiped 6 barrel Eggs in eveing  snowed nearly all day untill between 3 and 4 oclock  set into freese after dark

 

April 29 1874 Wednesday

            (Written top of page:  Dan Little to 1 pr coarse boots $6.00_)

            A cold frosty morning but indicates a clear day_  Mailed 6 checks & drafts (amounting to $280.25) to Frist N Bank Cadiz to be collected and placed to my credit  I sent 2 prs coarse Boots by Edward on trial for Dan Little to try if they would suit

 

April 30 1874 Thursday

            A disagreeable wettish day  the checks & drafts I sent to Cadiz were sent back to be indorsed which I done
