The Diary

April 1 1875 Thursday

            A warm fine morning  first I went to see Ed  said he felt a little better but not much_  After breakfast Mandey went over to Mikes but soon back, Then Mary come_ After feeding I hitched up Mules to Express  went to Leesville  took butter Eggs & a few potatoes  got Joseph to pay Mandeys acpt to Reppith & Carr  got shoes puld off of Mules  paid dividend to Miller & Houston Columbus  dined w Theadore & come home in time finish feeding  so went the day

 

April 2 1875 Friday

            A wetish snowey day from morning till night  at home mend & grese old harnefs  in eve put cloude of lime on horse and feed about all I done the whole day and got verry tired at that

 

April 3 1875 Saturday

            A fine spring morning  as soon as I could I started for Carlton on Nance mare  thare again 12 oclock  dined and fed with Van Horn  bill 50 cts  paid costs to Clerk of Court Taylor in the OP Taylor of New Philadelphia case $1.40  paid the Forbush & Brown Dividend to Eckley & Brown the Taggart check to Conik & CH Garden dev to R Railey_ Great Atlantic Tea Co to Moreland & got readey to come home again 3 oclock and here again dark  feeling bad with the cold

 

April 4 1875 Sunday

            I felt miserable unwell all night  got up in the morning sick  went to Clendenings  bot 1/2 lb salts  took a dose before breakfast which worked admirable  Robert & Theadore come up after dinner  stayed till after earley supper then went home

 

April 5 1875 Monday

            After breakfast & feeding Ed & I went to New Market  I got the pockets put back in my Coat by Hines  REceved the English acpts of A Scott $23.75 paid Wm Hearn his divident & come home

            Robert McCourt come before dinner to set into work for six monts at the rate of $18.50 pr month  to have his washing & mending of his every day clothes in and something to ride home once a month  he to take good care and use it well  put in the after noon haul stone to stop break in run at this side of Mikes  I started for Leesburgh after supper to see about joining in carr to ship cattle  after night when I arrived

 

April 6 1875 Tuesday

            slept at Joseph last night and had my breakfast there  I left him $120.00 more to pay out on dividends  eat my dinner w Theadore & come home through Bowerston  Ed let Joseph Bear have the No 4, left hand lever Pittsburgh Plow pay ing him $4.00 in hand and promised him $2.00 more in a few days  positiveley  Robert helping Edward to clean the brush off of his orchard all day

 

April 7 1875 Wednesday

            Fine weather  At home till after dinner when I went to get dispatch from Pitts which L.Hunt sent  then to Leesville to see M Price whom declined to Carr this evening & I come home trough Hagers & Bowerston to tell Wm Pem

            Robert sowing clover seed all forenoon & part of after then hauld some 3 loads manure

 

April 8 1875 Thursday

            A fine day  Robert hauling manure till after 4 oclock when he began to fix to take the cattle to Bowerston_ I went Lees  Dined with Joseph and asertained the redinefs of Price shiping  home before or soon after 3 oclock  Harve Willett sold his mare $75.00 on 4 monts paid on timber 40 cents and as Wm Pem says my share on cattle $6.60  six 60/100 dollars  which I am to pay M Price  got the cattle down about sunset and carred safe before I got to Bowerston seeing the situation I concluded to come home again & go in the morning on passinger train_ The boys brong Theadores Exprefs & horses & not home till after 9 oclock I rideing Coley

 

 

April 9 1875 Friday

            A fine day  Robert went to haul dung and got hurt about 3 oclock as I was informed badley= I left at 8 oclock for Pittsburgh  arived there 2 oclock 20 minutes  fare round trip $5.65  stoped at Hares Hotell but met Theadore at the Union Depot- none of the boys had there dinners untill I got there  I got $20.00 bill changed in bank and gave to Theadore $6.60 to pay Meradith my portion on the cattle fraight  Theadore went over to alleghaney to hear if Wilson could tell him of any butchers  a dull evening at Hayes all night

 

April 10 1875 Saturday

            A very fine morning  I slept at Hairs Hotel  Theadore slept with me_  After breakfast we went around among the Butchers  all so busy  no chance to talk_  Then we went out to East Liberty  talked some with Holmes come back to Pittsburgh on street carr  th fare back 12 cts on street carr on (steern) East 14 cts round trip 25 cts_  Took dinner & after I gave Theadore cash at Hairs Office $5.00 paid my bill 4 meals & lodging $2.00  met M Holmes at stable just at 2 oclock  said if we did not get 7 cts for cattle to bring up to East Liberty  left Pitts 13 minutes after 2 pm & home again 6 oclock

 

April 11 1875 Sunday

            Had 2 or 3 nice April showers  I at home nursing Robert McCourt  Mandey rode Coley mare to Leesburgh  I gave Mary cash one dollar to give to her to pay Fan Robey for making her drefs cash $1.00  Edward here most of the day helping to nurse Robert _ Wm Johnston & Phills Smilley cauled in to see him

 

April 12 1875 Monday

            A fine day  Robert some better but could get out of bed  Mary very sick all day  Edward started to plow in wheat stuble for Oats about 11 oclock  Robert Frank & clide come before dinner and after took Theadores mare & Eds bugey and children and went home  Clide getting sick  I went down to station at 6 oclock expecting to meet Theadore but disapointed_ I saw Shotwell on carrs  I bought a plow point of Clending a No5 center Leever for 50 cts cash and brought it up home on condition if it did not fit to be returned and give me back my money

 

April 13 1875 Tuesday

            A wettish stormey morning  too wett to plow  Edward & I sawed up two sugartree loggs & split them with the help of J.W. Heaston who come to borrow the chisels  Robert H brought Theadore mare & bugey back and sold some goods to Wilson & Clendening which Kept him till nearley night wh he went home on the train as Theadore come who stayed all night paying me $236.00 on the cattle  furnishing bill of sale to Holmes Lufferty Glafs & Co  Pittsburgh Central Stockyards  East Liberty  the two weighing 3970lb at 6 1/2 = $258.05  Fraight $6.60 cauling 40 _ $7.00 yardage  Hay & corn $5.00 my fare $6.00 bord $2.00  Theadores expences not in

 

April 14 1875 Wednesday

            More moderate damp & coolish  after breakfast Theadore fixed up and started home with his teem & some sheef oats  Robert some better but yet unable to leave his bed  Philip & some clergymen in to see him_  After I shaving I rode nance to Leesburgh dined with Robert _ I paid Joseph on my note $100.00 in two fifty dollarbills_  Brought home some groceries that Joseph put in one his baggs to be returned  Robert started away with Butterfields teem to Dour  expected to get back to N Philad  Joseph put up a dividend to an Alliance Creditor  I think Ed plowed some in afternoon

 

April 15 1875 Thursday

            A coolish like cloudey day  I think Ed plowed most of the day  untill late in the evening when word come for him to take his wife to S. Gutshalls  report come that his wife & children was verry bad_ I at home all day some unwell repairing some bridal rains etc till feeding time

 

April 16 1875 Friday

            A verry stormey cold blustery snowey freesing day_ informed by A. Olifant on saturday William Smith (Jr?) son died to day about 3 oclock_

            Edward went to Gutshalls before dinner to hear & see how they all were  rode Nance & not back till about 4 oclock_  I quite unwell staying at the house  onley while tending to the stock all day  did not evin mend a strap  it was so awful blustery

 

April 17 1875 Saturday

            A nother awful blustery cold day  Edward went up to Gutshalls before dinner  after his wife_ A Olifant come just at dinner time telling us of Willey Smith death_ After dinner we wrote a consoling letter sent it to Julia by Ollifant_ Edward declined going to Leesville on account of the severity of the weather_ I huged the house close all day  feeling quite unwell  had disentary too which made me worse  a cold night and hard freese

 

April 18 1875 Sunday

            A wintery day  too cold & stormey to go to Deersville to the funeral  Ed would have went but his Mother opposed it on account of his health_  This is the day Mandey weding is to come off at the U N Bret Church at afternoon meeting_  I went to meeting after all had left and heard the marriage cermoney_ then come home and went to feeding_ No body here but Robert McCourt and he is still confined to the bed but I think is getting some better  this is the second sunday since he got hurt

 

April 19 1875 Monday

            Cold & raw  hard freese  I at home all day  Old Mr Beadle come up  Theadore come just after we had eat our dinner for some chaff  Ed hauld some beding from barn the waist of sheep & cattle  then hauld 3 loads wood  I helped him with one I got up some 3 sacks of chaff_

 

April 20 1875 Tuesday

            Quite a snow till last night after a hard shower of rain  Ed & Fredey here all night  his wife up at Gutshalls tending the sick  David Shilts & Mandey drove up a while before dinner in a one horse covered bugey and stayed all day  after noon mended check & head halter & greased them about all I done except feed

 

April 21 1875 Wednesday

            Frose last night and is still cold  Fred slept with us last night  Ed at Gutshalls till 12 oclock his child having died yesterday eve and taken to Hanover to be berried to day_ Edward filled up some 6 1/2 bushels wheat corn & rye & took it to mill then went to Gutshalls_  I at home all forenoon  after din I went to Leesburgh for the News

 

April 22 1875 Thursday

            A little more moderate  After breakfas I went to Leesburgh to get old exprefs wheel mended by G. Clark & 2 single trees dressed down  got 4 removes on Coley mare by S Martin and the Mattock put into better shape  I Eat my dinner with Theadore and after lent him $50.00  He come home with me to exhange piggs with Ed  I hauled the piggs  Robert McCourt still held to our bed and I am getting verry tiread of it_  Edward plowed some in after noon

 

April 23 1875 Friday

            Still moderating  I at home all day forenoon  I greased the horse & chored around  after noon I was mending old hip straps  Ed finished plowing in the wheat stubble  after dinner began to sow Oats_  Mary away most all day at Mikes_ Old Mr Crawford & wife here before bed time a while_ Robert went up stayrs for the first time since he got hurt

 

April 24 1875 Saturday

            A wintery morning quite a snow on the ground  after breakfast I hitched up Nance & coley to Carriage and took Robert McCourt home  The first he could leave the house since he got hurted_ being confined to the bed & house two weeks & one day  It took the day to go to his fathers and back  worth at least $2.50  brought his brother John back with me to work in Roberts place for a couple of weeks till he get stronger

 

April 25 1875 Sunday

            got quite moderate turned out a fine day_ daughter Sarah and old Mrs Frobes drove up a while after breakfast to spend the day with her mother_ just at 11 oclock I started to Leesburgh for the news  Robert H got home  I dined with him_ After learning about the (rem) of the court  I come home trough J Lyons place got home before Mike & sarah had left and Mike & I took a ride out over the creek to look at the bottom

 

April 26 1875 Monday

            A fine pleasant day  Ed & John went to sow & harrow in the oats on the wheat stuble  got done  it again middle of the day  I went to Mill for the grist of chop  thin to Leesville with Nance & Coley to bigg wagon for the Exprefs wagon Wheel that G Clark had new rimed  I got Jim Moureland to put Tire on it & four removes on Nance mare which I suppose he wo charge me a dollar for  Joseph seen to some assgnee acpts and wrote to Mr Adams of Salem Columbiana  I did not get home untill dark   John & Ed plowed the garden and plowed some potatoes in the afternoon_ Robert started for Philadelp this evening by way of Deason to get on the fast line

 

April 27 1875 Tuesday

            A fine day  At home forenoon puting some steping stones in Creek at fording  John McCort helping Edward  John M Lane here seeding  after dinner took stock to ampt of $7.00 in all of (Chattler?)_

            .cd commened plowing cornstubble in the bottom for oats after dinner  John McCourt grubing and chop willows over creek in bottom and some thorn bushes in upper eand of corn stuble which was his after noon work_ I wrote a letter to Philp Pa to Mefses Jones & Warner Garranteen the pay if they would send the goods to Mrs E L Smith which was ordered some two weeks ago_ Theadore up here for chaff and brought the Turkey here I told him to buy me of Mrs Ch??? yesterday for 75 cts I paid him

 

April 28 1875 Wednesday

            coolish but a fine drying day after getting some 9 Young Sugartree to plant down at gate opposite to the ME Church  Wm Johnston helping to find them of J Lyons place_ John McCourt fixed to start the second plow with Nance & bay horse and done pretty well_ I at home all day onley while I changed a plow point I got of E N Clendening

            John McCourt lost plow rench of cast plow _ cost cash 25 cts which he will have to pay for

 

April 29 1875 Thursday

            A fine dry day  John McCourt & Ed plowing all day in bottom  Ed got sick with head ake in evening  got very windey in after noon  blowing the stable & shed doors off & big apple down in field beyond the stable and some fence  I went to Leesburgh after dinner to get the news_ I paid Joseph on my note $100.00 in one bill also gave him cash $3.00 to buy me 1 bus timeathy seed of Wm Price in Bowerstown borrowed his shawl to come home expecting a shower  Rev Patterson & R McMillin of Deesville took away their horses being here since Monday morning paying me $1.50 cts each

 

April 30 1875 Friday

            Fine dry day & I at home  marked off oat ground for Ed to sow oats in the bottom & John McCourt to harrow which he was at all day & Ed most of the day sowing  I hauld a little load wood in the after noon & Ed plowed a little below the ditch acrofs the bottom  John got over all the upper end one way and commenced to crofs a little expecting to finish crossing with the harrow to morrow but I turned out a failure at was a wet day
