The Diary

August 1 Saturday 1874

            Cloudey & some appearance of rain  Robert & Stephenson started for Carrolton about 8 oclock with Prin horse & his bugey  did not get back till after 9 PM  Theadore tending store all day  I lent him $5.00 for a short while _ It rained a couple of little showers trough the day but light_ I left for Mastersvile about 6 oclock  home about dark_

Henry left after dinner done very little before pretended to file croscut saw  Mary said did not earn anything_

 

August 2 Sunday 1874

            A fine warm day  I not off of place  Joseph & family come between 11 & 12 oclock & stayed till about 4 in eve  Ed & Mandy tending meeting late in eve  Ed & Fred took drive to Leesville leaving me alone to tend the stock  rode over the creek and saw the sheep & colt all looked right

 

August 3 Monday 1874

            A fine braceing morning  not up early  Siles Swonehart come to look at sheep  none to suit him_ After doing up the chores Ed & I sowed some turnip seed which I got on saturday_ While at dinner Henry walked in  after I set him to grub large Willows in bottom over creek  he grumbled about  Ed & Mandy went to pick black berrys  I fixed up & come to Leesbr  Theadore sold his piggs to Bill McKue for prom of 5 1/2 cts pr lb delivered in Bowerston to be weighed there 365 lb  When he come back gave check on Bill & Culley for $175.66 on which I gave him Cash on $100.00 bal placed to his credit on the assinee acpt $75.66 two.

 

 

August 4 Tuesday 1874

            A fine morning  Theadore went after butter & eggs  dull in store  Vilagers fixing for their Sunday school Pre (Nir?)  I went up home after 4 oclock they were at supper_ Edward & Henry had been sawing fire wood with croscut all day_ After supper Hen makeing (gluts?) then went to town

 

August 5 Wednesday 1874

            Cool & fine morning  I up early  hrought in mare had breakfast and off for Leesburgh_ Henry talked of going to help J.M. Holmes trash Mikes machine_ Edward fixing to plow_ RH. started out to collect in neighbourhood of crossings Uhrichville & Rockford_ Theadore after getting shoe on black mare with me in store Lawyer Hance of New Philadelphia call to present RL Orr & Co Philadelphia Pa claim  Henry plowed all day in Oat stuble

 

August 6 Thursday 1874

            A fine day  Theadore packing butter at leasure times, though kept rather buisey in the store selling Queensware to Trip & ms and trading for blackberry's etc  Robert got home about 4 oclock PM made some collection & said he stayed all night in Uhrichville at bro Johns_ Forenoon Henry helping Edward under barn with manure after noon plowed

 

August 7 Friday 1874

            A fine shower this morning thretning more rain_ Theadore took butter & Egg to station  I enquiring about some acpts forenoon  after noon left for home by Bowerston Cauling on Doc Moorared?   Mike OConner got nothing but promice  Henry plowing in Oat stuble all day  Ed haul manure oxen  James Barr here for supper after went down to town  A wet night rained a great deal

 

August 8 Saturday 1874

            A wet forenoon  I at home all day  Edward fixing oxbows till dinner  Henry tinkering at bracket locks for himself till he got his dinner then put out_ Ed & Mary went to Leesburgh for groceries  Mandy went over to Mikes along with Sarah  Mike walking across by here after I walked down to town  lent Sam Johnston Eds saddle cleared up a fine after noon  Dan Shilts come to see Mandy after night

 

August 9 Sunday 1874

            A fine clear morning up earley for to start Ed & Mary to Cadiz to Camp meeting, after chors done up Mandy rood Coon Mare to Hagerstown_ Jaco huff come here and helped me to dress the horses legg  it was full of wormes  we washed it clean took out hte worms and put on a heavy plaster of consencrated lye  Mandy back a little after 2 oclock but run contack with the Gipseys  Mary & Ed home from Cadiz Camp meet little after 8 oclock  Mary very sick  Mandy away at singing

 

August 10 Monday 1874

            A fine morning little muley White steer died last night which I got of Jack Jones_ First thing after breakfast Edward & Henry skined him  skin weighing 33  brought to Shearer to tan on Shears  John Forbes bought 5 head younel cattle for $90.00  Red steer  stag steer  Worstall steer yearlin I raised & muley heffer got of Jack Jones - Henry plowing in oat stuble forenoon  I started for Leesburgh at 11 oclock  went back at about 5 oclock_  Edward sold 35 lambs  all we had and gave in an old Ewe for leader for $35.00  Henry helped Mansfield trash after dinner till after 8 oclock at night  rod Coon Mare  I went over after him and stayed till they were done_  Before I left Leesburgh Doc McGuire mad out request to send to Cincinnati gazett about the wart on horse  I giving Joseph 5 cts to pay him postage

 

August 11 Tuesday 1874

            Very warm  Henry went to plow ED with Deen  took grist wheat to mill  I to Leesburgh after dinner  Theadore went to Masterville after 2 piggs when he came back I told him to get cash out of drawer $15.00 next morning I gave him $15.00 in stable before starting for butter & eggs_ Theadore told me Ed was plowing finishing field and Henry at Mikes fixing his well

 

August 12 Wednesday 1874

            Extremley warm  Robert packing Eggs  Theadore started after produce  I remained till 5 oclock after setling the one acpt with Don Night & Rev Fesse Hammilton  Henry plowing on lower side of oat stuble  Edward trashing at Widow J. Shilts after coming home they took Brindle Cow to Shilts Bull left her all night  I understood Henry had been working forenoon at Mikes

 

August 13 Thursday 1874

            Fine morning  after breakfast Henry went to help Mike with well  Edward to plowing over in oat stuble sheep house  I put bay horse standing in creek Fixed up took Mary & Fred to Leesburgh gave Mary chash 25 cts to buy collar for Mandy_ Had a fine shower of rain heaves up at Masterville  Henry at Mikes all day  Edward gone when we come home & D. Shilts come for Mandy

 

August 14 Friday 1874

            Fine morning slept late  Henry off to Mike before breakfast  to Mikes to help him at well_ Edward plowing  I went to see Kerr and then to Perry to see Hen Custer said he would be in Leesburg fore part of week after next and call to see us about the Baz Price case, went to hear Stewart of Steubenville lecture on temperance at night

 

August 15 Saturday 1874

            Picknick at gundy meeting house  Ed and Mandy went after breakfast  after putting horse in creek I went to Leesburgh come home late in eve and I believe it was this night Stuart lectured in meeting house on temperance  When the (lx or lse) element got up on lisence

 

August 16 Sunday 1874

            Fine day  at home all day went to hear Rev McCarty preach  Mandy rode Coon Mare after breakfast  not back till meeting was nearly out  Ed was at Sunday School  Sarah & Mike come home with him

 

August 17 Monday 1874

            Fine morning  Henry on hand after breakfast Edward went to plow in oat stubble  Hen to haul off stone with oxen after dinner got mad & left and glad of it_ I went to Leesburgh to see how things was  all was well  come back just at dark  Hen here to settle put him off till morning  went to town to hear them talk on Licence question  stayed till 11 oclock then left

 

August 18 Tuesday 1874

            Dry & warm  after breakfast settled with Shamme Weaver he falling in way of debt 7 cts and about as bad cornered as I ever seen a man_  Went to New Market voted  home again dinner  Harve Beamer  here for their dinners & horses fed  I sold Beamer 20 of the pick out of the sheep for $53.00  onley 3 yewes in the 20_ on my way home from New Market I bought 9 lb stake of T.Swinehart for 85 cts  gave Mary one dollar with instructions to leave the 85 cts at Clendenings

 

August 19 Wednesday 1874

            Dry & warm after breakfast Ed went to help bring treshing machine did not get set till after 9 oclock  had bad luck in breaking tresher & sweeper hands  Rob Law_ Most Heaston JW Heaston_ Jacob Snider D Holmes Wm Nations Ben Johnston J Huff  John Shilts Mike & ourselves was the help  got done or quit before 5 oclock but did not get the machines load till near 6 oclock

 

August 20 Thursday 1874

            Warm & dry  Edward went to plow after I done up the chores and put horse in creek it was too late to go to Leesburgh till after dinner and while we were eating Frank Smith come  I went to see Mansfield with him but he Mansfield had gone to New Market so I came back and went to Leesville and come back same evening  Campbell of Steubenville had been to see RH and had left a while before I come  St Clair was also thare

 

August 21 Friday 1874

            Still dry & warm  Edward went to finish plowing & after hauld two loads RR ties  Mike helping- I went to Leesburgh before dinner met Theadore takeing butter to the station  Robert had several (lunners) cauling to see him yesterday & today  I come home in evening  late meeting Mansfield at station in Conversation with Wm Law

 

August 22 Saturday 1874

            Warm & sultry  Edward went to help I Heaston trash  I dug some potatoes and caut two chickens  went to Leesville in express & mules  lost the chickens  brought back Lilley & Frank Clide come rideing on a dun poney so put in the evening RH was at G Easterdays sale when I went down I was home in time to brng the horse out of creek

 

August 23 Sunday 1874

            Looking like rain but did not rain much  Robert come up after dinner with wife babe & Carry on M Price platform cut under  took all his family back also Clide rode off  he also brought Sarah Fierbaugh & Tonewey home_ To day make 11 days for the horse to be standing a while each day in the creek

            After all left I rode up to Mansfield and talked a while with him

 

August 24 Monday 1874

            A fine pleasant day as soon as I could fix up I started to Julia Smith by way Deersville with Buck sheep  got there after 1 oclock pm_  They cashed the note I held again brother William for $110.00 made 15th March 72 four monts till due by cash $120.00 allowing in there favor $3.80 which I agreed to throw off started home after 4 oclock got my supper at FT Simontons  did not get home till near 10 oclock- Edward had been hauling stone off of field for wheat_ Robert had been to Carlton today

 

August 25 Tuesday 1874

            Dry and fine  Edward started to harrow for wheat back of Phillips after getting things done up I come to Leesburgh trough Bowerston but little done Theadore out looking for butter & eggs_ After supper I left for J Plowmans to give him one acpt on Sam Gamble $261 & 2 Notes on Wm Rabe Each 5.25 14.92 to collect_ I receaved of him money collected off of Sam Hurless $15.65 which I must return his recpt for_ Then went home it being after 7 oclock

 

August 26 Wednesday 1874

            Fine dry morning  Edward to harrowing I to Fierbaughs after sledge then to Leesville trough Hagerstown  Theadore after chaff  G. Holmes come and paid his acpt $5.30  RH got the money  Theadore went out after dinner for butter & Eggs at night to Hagerstown  Robert sold 1 pr boots & something to the Parker boys  I remained all night at Roberts in Leesburgh

 

August 27 Thursday 1874

            Dry & dusty, about 10 oclock the folks began to fix to go to Sherrodsville to the Exabition Joseph fixed up and took a stand down on Express wagon which was a start for a bendor_ Theadore went down after night brought home Lide Clide & team as I understood & left Joseph there  I come up home after supper but little done in store to day  Wile Watt cut Theadore hair & mine  Edward had been hauling R.R. Ties with oxen  Mike helping him as I come home

 

August 28 Friday 1874

            (Written top of page: Mandy Barns to 1 pr garters $2.75 lowest)

            Verey dry & dusty  after breakfast as soon as I could fix up Mary & I went to Leesburgh  got there found J on spree though receaved butter & attended to it right  Theadore made made shipment of 11 Fukes  thought it best to stay with JS so I come home_  Edward put un a day on road with oxen & has another day to put in yet_ Mary setled for Freds shoes with butter & I gave her cash 60 cts for to get something  Brought Mandey 1 pr lashing garter on trial if kept to be $2.75 they were kept had butter for

 

August 29 Saturday 1874

            Still dry Ed haul manure & stone etc over on oat stuble field  I went up to Nines to see if I could get Dan to work after dinner I went to Leesville for Mary She concluded not to come yet so I brout Josey Barnes home with me a pr of lasting gaiters for Mandy to try Robert said worth $3.00 after trying they pleased & she concluded to keep them

 

August 30 Sunday 1874

            Dry & Verry dustey after breakfast Ed hitched up Coley to is bugey & gone all day come home sick with head ake_ I went to salt sheep and young cattle  about the house bal of forenoon after late dinner I went to Leesburgh for Mary take Josey Barnes home_ learn Joseph left on Saturday night for parts unknown after all their watching understood he stayed in telegraph office that night

 

August 31 Monday 1874

            After breakfast I started for Carlton dined & fed mare with Moorley 1/2 mile at this side free of charge_ Went to town and put in answer to Doc Stephenson (replerise?) Cash of the Hunt & Price notes then back to Leesburgh where I stayed all night John Striker was going to sow wheat this morning as I went along the first I heard of sowing about here
