The Diary           

August 1 1875 Sunday

            A wet forenoon & very dull here alone onley John who appeared to be writing a letter at this writing  after 12 oclock  I have not cleaned up yet it look some like clearing off & getting windy  After dinner I cleaned up and John & Mary went to meeting  I read some  it clouded up & turned in to rain and was a very wet night

 

August 2 1875 Monday

            A wet morning  John choreing around till about 9 oclock when he & I went down to bottom & cut some small trees  I with him till after 2 oclock leaving him choping till about 4 oclock  Ed &  come up to cut oats till night_ I hitched Mules to exprefs & went to Leesburgh  bot 10 cents worth of Tobacco of Joseph  come home bringing Ellon along  being away since Saturday after noon  Abe Smith come and was her next day till after dinner  rained considerable this night

 

August 3 1875 Tuesday

            Another wet morning_ After breakfast Abe Smith paid $300.00 three hundred dollars on note I hold again of his faters March 11th 1870_ which I signed recpt for besides entering on note_ John & Ed siding up shed till after 2 oclock when they wen at oats again_ Jake Weyant come at 4 oclock & rept till near night  I gave him 16 lb flower for it promising to come back in morning & pay for ballance

 

August 4 1875 Wednesday

            Fine monring  weather promising better  John & Ed cradeling oats till after 4 oclock whin they got done  Then went to Tieing some till night  D. Cristey cauled here looking for cattle  J Weant come 1/4 before 4 oclock and set in to reap oats & (bring?) till supper then went over the creek to reap till night  stayed here

 

August 5 1875 Thursday

            A fine morning_ After breakfast John Ed Jake & Myself all went over creek at the oats till after 9 oclock come back & went to opening wheat  Theadore come come before dinner while we were at the wheat  got it hauld in after din Jake stayed with us on this side bind  wheat & oats till night  slept here

 

August 6 1875 Friday

            Cloudey  looking like rain John & Jak Wiyant bound some oats before breakfast  there being no dew, after breakfast we all went over the creek to reap Oats onley Ed who went to mow at far end of oat on hill field_ The rest of us all reaped till dinner_ After Jake and John Edward & Theadore went back to reap till near 5 oclock_ I staying at the house to greese the hinges and get Coley shod before  2 removes by S. Johnson cost cash 25 cts  After supper I paid J Wyant cash for 2 days work two dollars $2 he contending for more wages  was stopped twice in forenoon by showers

 

August 7 1875 Saturday

            A fine morning  up earley  John bound some Oats before breakfast  The boys boun all the oats & hauld them in as also the hay  Theadore & family coming at 10 oclock with family_ I went to Carrolton drove Coley to Eds bugey  met Robert there  got a coppey of Crim answer to Rue Petition  my expense 5 cents for cakes to Coliman brough Robert to Hagerstown & I home before dark_ Informed Jake Wyant was here demanding one dollars worth of flower which Mary opposed and he went away vexed

 

August 8 1875 Sunday

            A beautiful day  Ed & John rod mules to darkey meeting_ I hitched up Nance & Coley to exprefs & went to Leesburgh  got 1 lb of samples Tobacco & two Samples of (Tin?)  brough Lilly & Carry home with me  met Joseph Clide & Roberts Frank in Hagerstown  I back again dinner  at home bal of the day  Theadore spent the day at Englishes  come by here on his way home  after Joseph had left I made three entries on this diary before going to bed  friday saturday & to day

 

August 9 1875 Monday

            A fine day  John working in oats over the creek  I went up to H Pittingers to look for help to reap oats but found none,  Ed took the mowing machine ove the creek to try in the oats  after he mowed the patch of far end of oats  I rept a while after dinner and helped to rake away from machine  didnt do much good with machine  Theadore not here to day

 

August 10 1875 Tuesday

            At oats in bottom  John at them all day  Theadore come a while before dinner helped John pull away from machine  I rept some raked up hay far end oat stuble & hauld in gagg of rotton wheat & boys brought in load oats out of bottom

 

August 11 1875 Wednesday

            John & all hands went at oats ovr C except Ed who went to mow over in Schoolhouse field, got in load before dinner  getting ready to go agai but broke off by sharp shower  Ed kept on mowing all day_  I went up after breakfast to see if I could get G. Simmons to reap  he was trashing  could not come-  John Theadore & I rept afternoon when shower was over  John going out after supper  Theadore went home  I after cows & up to see Sam Tipton but all no use  was engaged

 

August 12 1875 Thursday

            Dampish morning  John & Edward reap in oats all fore noon  I rept an hour or so till dinner_ Theadore & Clide come on a while before dinner, After I made the entries since Sunday_ After breakfast I went over to see G. Simmon to help reap  was trashing Wolfs trasher  Sim pledged to Sol Sults if he could reap any_ After dinner all hands putting up hay in School house field come up rain just as we got done, I raked with nance did not go out after supper

 

August 13 1875 Friday

            Cleared up & fine_ At oats all day  I reaped at upper end along the creek to make opening along creek to make opening for machine  I was over at Fierbaughs after dinner and also after supper to see Deswatt boys but of no avail_ John reaped cradled & pulled away from Machine  Theadore & Clide with us all day

 

August 14 1875 Saturday

            Fine weather  all hands at the oats all day  cut with machine after din went after the boys  all reaping till then_ I repd all day onley a while after dinner I was gathering up the wheat_  The boys all binding & shocking till supper  haulded in 2 loads oats to day  at noon & sup when all hands quit_ John took Alick mule & started for home  Theadore & Clide went home takeing some 3 doz sheaf oats on his exprefs $10.00  John McCourt to Cash ten dollars two five dollar bills on First NB Cadiz_ I greased the horses legg after all hands left

 

August 15 1875 Sunday

            A fine clear morning very warm  Ellon went UNB sunday school  not back till after supper time  not here till milking done_  Robert & family all but Lilly come at between 1 & 2 oclock  I had cleaned up & I think dinner over_ Theadore not here  Scot English here at supper time but would not Eat any  I think to see Elley  but she was not here  I not off of the place to day  Ellon went to singing  out late  had a bow with her English

 

August 16 1875 Monday

            John & Edward hauling oats & rye all day & the hay at far end of oats stuble  reaping over the creek at intervels while I was not help mow oats rept some  3 dozen boys  got on well  had a light shower after dinner 

            Robert started to Stubenvill at noon & while there got pursuaded to go on to New York to see Globe Manufacturing Company  which he did_ I gave him orders to by Barrel Salt for me of JT Campbell  which he done and said he gave cash for it $1.60 and it arrived here on the 21 first inst

 

August 17 1875 Tuesday

            Fine morning  John & I went to reap oats  got done about 11 oclock when Theadore & Clide come gust as we were finishing binding_  Edward mowing over next to school house & down at home after dinner  John Theadore & I built stack frame & got 3 loads hay on it_ I got tired just at dark  Mifs Holmes brought of Mary Deans death  indication of rain & did rain a shower in the night

 

August 18 1875 Wednesday

            Dampish morning  John Ed & Theadore went to finish stack of hay hay at old hogg pen & haul in some in cock to Eds stable &  piled stuble hear  3 loads in all & put up some hay in next School house_ Mary & I went to Leesburgh to Aunt Mary Deans funeral which took place at 4 oclock out in hard shower  coming home at this side Rowleys  Mary bot some sugar & things of Joseph  not paid for  I think one dollars worth.

 

August 19 1875 Thursday

            Wettish morning  I salting stock  John fixing to go to Hagerstown to the Reunion of all the old students  rode Nance started at 9 oclock_ Ed looking for boom pole to tie load hay on wagon & took it to Joseph after dinner  I helped him load it  put on 11 large cocks  back before 5 oclock_ I lent carriage & Coley m to Ed Clendening to take his wife to Hagerstown  I at home all day  in evening mending choke straps of harnefs_ John not back with Nan till 12 oclock and she has been ver lame since and I felt vexed about it very much

 

August 20 1875 Friday

            A wettish morning  John & Ed built stack frame in orchard, then we commenced hauling in hay  two loads before dinner 3 after_ Theadore & Lee Dalley come in eve & helped to finish the stack while Ed went to mow hay for Theadore with Mikes Machine late in evening ours breaking  after supper Theadore & Dalley went over in bottom for 12 1/2 doz sheaf oats & went home with it  keeping ballance himself  John mowing some hay in (Drafs?) in wheat stuble

 

August 21 1875 Saturday

            A fine drying harvest day  OP Taylor of New Philadelphia here earley this morning on his way to see Wm Crim  John finished mowing draft in wheat stuble then mowed weeds in draft in calf lot forenoon  after noon mow fence corner & work in hay  Ed come to mow earley & finished  Theadore & Dilley come about 10 oclock  helped to put up hay & took home load in Eve  I went to Leesburg after dinner & not back till near 6 oclock  bot of Joseph 8 cts worth of pearl buttons & 5 cts peanuts for Fred  After come home went down to station  paid Clendening frait on barrel salt and got 1 pint spir Turpentine all 47 cts  36 & 11 cts

 

August 22 1875 Sunday

            A fine day  after breakfast I went to Leesburgh  stayed there some 3 hours  got dinner with Robert and he presented me with an extra pr of suspenders  come home earley  had Mike & wife & D Shilts & wife for supper  I greased horses leg and that ended the day

 

August 23 1875 Monday

            Fine coolish morning_ John working in hay in field opasite barn and in calf lot & draft in Wheat stuble  Ed at same & took load to Leesburg after dinner_ Theadore & Dilley here for 2 loads hay to day_ I went to Carrolton on law businefs on Coley  put her in Doc Scots Stable  had my own feed_ bot 5 cts gin cakes and after learning what I could  come home through Perryville & had interview with Wm Crim etc in Masterville again 7 oclock

 

August 24 1875 Tuesday

            Fine morning & day  John mowing in Calf lot forepart of day_ then he & Ed took in hay to Eds  hauld some here  fenced hay stack etc & after sup went to wash carriages_ Mary Fred & I went to Leesburgh  I got Baker to drive 4 shoes on Nance & Coley 60 cts  I paid for in cash  Mary bot goods & groceries of Joseph to ampt of $2.25  Charged to me  got our dinners with Rachel & aft come home_ Informed Lawyer Crane of Carlton was there seeing Bill Adair & Senft

 

August 25 1875 Wednesday

            John McCourt helping Ed most all day down in his lot grubing & culling of briars Elders etc_ Mary & I went to Cadiz got our dinners with Harvey L. Thompson  put horses in old stab at J.T. McFaddens  consulted with Estep for $^zz  paid  bot 1/2 gal Tan oil 60 cts  1/2 pint castor 20 cts  Rocking chair $3.25  lent Mary $2.00 got back 25 and on coming home Candey for Fred 5 ct =$7.85   left Cadiz 20 minits after 4 & home again 7 1/2 oclock  makeing the trip in 3 1/4 hours_ John McCourt hauled some wood to day  I believe 2 little loads here & two to Edward

 

August 26 1875 Thursday

            A fine warm day  John haul manure from stable in oat stuble  all day but 2 loads he took from barn in eve  Ed unwell with sick head ake  I at home all day choring around  salt sheep & cattle  mend choke straps & other little tinkering such as scraping up manure in stable yard

 

August 27 1875 Friday

            John at Fierbaughs all day help trash Linseed  I took Robert & Joseph 1 1/2 bus potatoes & some sweet corn roasting ears and about all I done  Edward sick & his wife also

 

August 28 1875 Saturday

            John haul manure from barn all day & but a poor days work in my opinion_ I went to Josh Browns to see about when he could come to trash_ got dinner & mare fed at Jake Weyandts & come home by the way of old Gamble & Leesbur buying sugar of Joseph to ampt of $1.00 paid him for  home before 6  cattle in stable & things out of order  John would not notice any thing

 

August 29 1875 Sunday

            Dry & Warm,  First after breakfast titen ligetures on horse then I went out and salted sheep  looked around corn  read some  clean up & at home all day_ Mike & Sarah come before dinner & Theadore & Lili with their children all stayed till near 5 oclock

 

August 30 1875 Monday

            Dry & Warm  John haul manure Eds and he & Elley went to gather Elderberrys  I went along to get plumbs  then went to station & see if Trashers had gone away from Mansfields  went up to John Holmes to see him before dinner_ John hauling manure all day from Eds  Nance & Jack Mule  after noon Ed mended gate at corner Phillip lot

 

August 31 1875 Tuesday

            (Written top of page: Joseph Masters To 47 1/2 lbs mutton $4.75 weighed by Wilson see below)

            This month goes out quite dry after all the proficey of 2 moons in it_ John & Ed haul manure all forenoon from Eds with 3 horses  Ed helping him in after noon from under Barn till 5 oclock quit earley to buther Muty sheep for Joseph  Masters To 47 1/2 lbs mutton weighed by Wilson at 10 cts _ $4.75  we Kept fore quarter 16 lb for ourselves  sheep supposed to clean some 62 lbs_ Dan Heaston here wanting hands on roads  wants 1 hand on Thursday with shovel  Mary gave Jake Wiant 22 lbs flower which she ought not to have done for he was over paid by Eds acpt
