The Diary

December 1 1874 Tuesday

            Another little fall of snow  Henry Hill wants to hire  told him I believed I did not want a hand but concluded he would stay to get more acquainted  said he ought to be worth his bord for a while till we become more acquainted  I said yes he could stay but go and talk with Mary  Ground axes and put handle in new one tinkered at wood & old buckets etc etc

 

December 2 1874 Wednesday

            Looking more fine mild and thawing_ After breakfast Hen hitched mules to Exprefs and went to Franklin for his trunk  back before 1 oclock P M  Y Holmes come to look at grate  after dinner Henry cut some wood_ Edward rode Coley to Bowerston to get some shoe mending done etc etc

 

December 3 1874 Thursday

            A fine day Edward went to Julia Smiths for Buck sheep  Henry & I yoked up oxen & went to move rails down to edge of wheat  done welll for a beginning_ Edward did not get back his little red & white cow  frolicking and out all night  Henry could not see to drive her in it got so dark

 

December 4 1874 Friday

            Another fine day  Henry finished haul rails & ground worn stone  Robert come up before dinner  Edward got back brought back sheep he is considerably reduced  Henry put him to the ewes this evening  Michal stopped in his way from town & stayed till after 10 oclock

 

December 5 1874 Saturday

            After breakfast Edward & Henry went to saw & split rails & wood at lower end of wheat back of Smitleys, at it all day_ Mary & I went to Leesville with Mules & exprefs  I got Chapman to repair near fore axle spindle 35 cts  I paid it & gave Mary cash 50  I brought home 2 boxes axel grease  little box with some bed screws & 3 gimblet screws to repair old desk  brought Carry home with us  away till night or nearley so_ David Shilts here to set up with Mandy

 

December 6 1874 Sunday

            Fine moderate day  at home dressing horse with old bakon got last eve of Mike & Sarah_ Mary Mandey & Henry all went to meeting to the ME Church_ prayer meeting at UNB Church at Earley Candle lighting DS acompanied Mandy  Henry went & Ed

 

December 7 1874 Monday

            A drisley morning  forenoon Ed & H hauling rails over at Schoolhouse fence fore noon & went to haul stone to put under  corners after noon with mules  I come to Leesburgh with Carry in bugey & to get some repairs done  on arival informed D Newell Killed    LM Robey & John Lukens engaged in law suit  Jury tryal  Lukens gained so went the day  Theadore did not get back till mid of day yesterday  W. Fisher bringing horse  Theadore & Walt attacked him which caused some excitement in Leesville all night

 

December 8 1874 Tuesday

            A stormey morning quite a little shower & cold  I Recd 2 Cips of H.B Shearer which he taned on the shares weighing 18 lb saying they all worth 80 cts pr lb worth $14.40 got Chapman & Martin to shoe Coley behind & put hand in old shovel Charging 35 & 15 = 50  Henry & edward hauling wood to Ed with oxen from down below wheat  Harvey the owner of stolen horse come to get him refusing to pay Watt & Theadore  some excitement about_ Campbell of Steubenville here trying to sell goods, etc etc etc young Eckley here to present Forbus & Brown acpt promised to call with him some time week after next  Recd of L Barrick JP Cash to ampt of $79.50 which he collected_ D Newell berried this evening  large funeral

 

December 9 1874 Wednesday

            A Frosty morning  slept at Roberts  after breakfast I bought Hat of him paying him $2.75 cash  bought cast steel soap of Joseph 10  started home before dinner  Coley & Eds bugey  Henry hauling wood with oxen from over near schoolhouse  after din I dressed horse then Henry & I went to get Maul stick  all we done

 

December 10 1874 Thursday

            A cloudey raw day  At home choring till 12 oclock when Mandy Mary & I went to dine with Edward and some of his wife friends together with Crawford and wife Mike & Sarah  had roast goose  Henry Chop wood at house  after coming from Eds Mike & I went to look at sheep but could not find them till Henry found them to put up

 

December 11 1874 Friday

            Quite cold & frosty after breakfast John Barns come to get bal of his wages  I gave him $3.00 after spent most of forenoon dressing horse  Jake Cramblet passed after dinner rode out to look for some piggs found none  Henry spent most of day hunting rabbits  got two so no work done on the place to day  Edward at home choping wood onley while finished mend sled

 

December 12 1874 Saturday

            Cloudey & Chilley  ground frosen hard  after breakfast Edward & Henry took old R R ties to Bowerston  oxen & Mules  I went to Leesburg setling with old Shearer  Theadore bot 2 loads hay of John Easterday_ I engaged 1 bus clover seed of Perry Smith leaving word for Robert to pay him cash $5 he being away at Dresdon  I bot Tob saltpetre & Lequonce of Joseph to ampt of 25 cts paid cash for in the way of getting a $5 changed & come home

 

December 13 1874 Sunday

            Mild & pleasant  I took a ride to Bowerston after Mandy started for home on Nance, whin I got back Robert here_ We went down & dined with Ed  after Robert started home I put in the bal of evening feeding  Henry acting verry trifling

 

December 14 1874 Monday

            Rained considerably last night turning to frese in the morning_ I receaved of MB. Fierbaugh $35.00 to pay his tax  after dressing the horse Henry ruptured himself jumping off of the mule and was lurking about  went to see old Beedle who recommended him to get a doctor  Robert come and we started for Cadiz got thare again night  put horses at Howsers  Rob went to Galaspies  I to H Tompsons  Edward went to New Market for doc Snider for Henry had a serious night with him

 

December 15 1874 Tuesday

            A cold morning frose hard last night  First paid taxes $29.28 for myself $5.17 for Edward $27.71 for Mike in $62.16 gave check from on Bank then made deposit in First N Bank of $2325.00 Recd of JM Estep $53.00  I bought 1 pr buck Mitts $1.75 1 pr cot gloves 25 cts = 2.00  Robert paid the Expenses at Howsers $1.20 at Waganers 15 cts_ Then we started home here before dark, after supper Robert went home  Henry well

 

December 16 1874 Wednesday

            Frosty morning  after breakfast Hen left  Ed went to Leesburgh for Alick mule_ I at home all day forenoon dressing horse  after noon shave maul handle getting wedge timber & feeding etc etc  raw & cloudey & drisley in afternoon

 

December 17 1874 Thursday

            Raw cloudey & cold all day  after feeding done I went to New Market to see Snider A Scott & Layton Hines  home in time to feed and that was all

            Theadore come first before dark to stay all night  got some Eggs & butter down in town

 

December 18 1874 Friday

            Fine day  I at home all of it  Ed went to help Overholts to trash  home in time to feed  Theadore left after he got some butter & Eggs of D. Fierbaugh Whom I gave his tax recpts & change

 

December 19 1874 Saturday

            A beautiful fine day  Ed & I hauled two loads straw from barn to stable  Underwood here for dinner drafting Map of farm  Simon Shilts here to pay & lift his note so went the day

 

December 20 1874 Sunday

            A snowey morning  Ed hitched to carrige & went to New Market with his wife to U P Church_ I cleaned up & went to Leesville  dined with RH  cauld on Theadore & Joseph  gave Lidey Cash $15.00 to buy bed steds & table  gave Joseph cash 20 cts for soap  then come home

 

December 21 1874 Monday

            Fine cold day  I washed & greaced the horse's leg_ Ed went to help Mike to butcher 2 hoggs  home again 2 oclock  hauld 3 loads wood to me from over above fording

 

December 22 1874 Tuesday

            A wettish day  at home forenoon gres hores legg after earley dinner went to Leesburgh  gave Mary cash $5.00 before starting_ Left cash 65 cts with Mrs Barns for John which paid him in full for his months work  Recd back the $15.00 which I gave Lidey on Sunday to buy Bed stids & table  at Roberts all night

 

December 23 1874 Wednesday

            A dry frosty morning  started for Carlton at 7 oclock AM  paid taxes $48.63 as follows $15.03 Mary Dean recpt given to Robert next day $20.02 on stock acessed in store $13.58 on town property  had lo load recpt  talked some with Shober & Railey  din with Railey_ thought he could not make out the assinee acpt till after court ajourned which commenced on 4 th January next When I will have to go & stay untill it is made out  Back to Leesburgh again 7 oclock PM Dok Stephenson along

 

December 24 1874 Thursday

            Frose hard last night  slept at Roberts  after late breakfast I rode Coley out to A Rainsburgers to collect  I reced $25.00 on his note of over $103.00 and come back to Roberts again 1 oclock got my dinner  bot 5 cts worth candy of JJ & come home  a cold windy day  I went to feeding  Ren Linder helping  Edward at his out house_ Ed & Ren suppered here

 

December 25 1874 Friday

            Frosty & Cold  after breakfast & feeding etc I spent bal of forenoon doct horse  Edward down at his out house at work  Mandey rode Nance mare home to Hagerstown_ A dull christmas here  went to office in evening for the mail

 

December 26 1874 Saturday

            A mild pleasant day  After breakfast & feeding done Mary Fred & I went on Exprefs & mules to Leesburgh took 2 bus potatoes & basket Eggs & butter  I got of Robert

2 1/2 yds steel mixed cloth 2.60                             5.00

1 1/2 yds callico print .15 & 1 3/4 steel cloth 1.31         1.46

1 1/2 Selicia .30 & 1/2 yd Hair cloth .20                     .50

1/2 yd  " .10 1/4 yd bro Holland .10                          .20

I paid out cash to Barrick                                  $7.16

 

December 27 1874 Sunday

            A fine mild morning_ after breakfast feeding & doing up chors Abraham & I went to M.E. Church  heard Mort Heaston trying to preach but fizeled  Theadore & family Abe S. & family & Mike & family all dined with us to day_ Turned out a drisely evening & made a wet night  Abe & family went home with Mike  Theadore staying with us all night

 

December 28 1874 Monday

            A wet morning & rained all day so that Theadore & Abe could not get home  made considerable high waters  I done but little more than drefs the horse & widen oxen stantials & went down to Mikes to see if Abe had ventured to go home & see the high waters etc etc

 

December 29 1874 Tuesday

            Very wet & soft  after breakfast when chors done & Theadore started I went to New Market with a coat pattern & vest to get Hines to make after getting back and dressing horse etc etc too late to leve for Leesburgh so I stayed at home turning up cold & freesing Mandey & Mary went to prayer meeting  I at home reading Ewell Medical Compani

 

December 30 1874 Wednesday

            Frose hard & cold  after work done I left for Leesville before dinner  after driving & dined with Robert we articled with Trip & Spence for store house & all its (appustemonces?) for two years from 12th last November at rate $150.00 pr year Eaqualing $300.00 and with J Trip for south end of dwelling to have two lower rooms & our upstairs front room with family privelage of seller at rate of $4.25 pr month for the following 18 at the rate of $5.00 pr month

 

December 31 1874 Thursday

            A very cold night up late in morning on account of hard freese after breakfast RH went out west to collect  I drawing off accounts & giving to Barrick before dinner & after make those entries  Robert back just before dark  Theadore soone after_ When I got my supper I started for home on Coley about 7 oclock & got home safe soon after 8 so I bought of JJ Smith 1 lump Tob and a new Perpetual Diary for 35 paid in cash for it & tobacco 45 cts
