The DiaryDecember 1 1875 Wednesday Cold & frosty_ At home all day I gave Mary $12.00 started her to Uhrichville on 11 olclock train Ed hauling corn out of barn 3 loads one soft out of cattle (stansiels ?) & two off barn floor put in new crib fixed hinge on stable door with the feeding about all we done
December 2 1875 Thursday Cold & frosty, though fine day Mike helping Ed haul foder all day Mary arived at one oclock all safe & well pleased with her purchases for Saman bot pr little boots for Tommy Elliot of Jefferson County here for dinner horse fed bought our two best cows for $95.00 calf thrown in I helped with them above V Truscals, on my way home in Mastervill met L.Holmes paid him for sitting grate $1.75_ Eds wife here on visiting all left after supper
December 3 1875 Friday Fine day for season of year After earley dinner I went to Leesvill with 2 bus potatoes & sack of flower over one hundred twenty five lbs made out of wheat on granary floor by J.Overholt for Robert had a short talk with Doc Stepenson got some news papers of Joseph & come home_ Had a dedication at grange hall a good many gathered to tend it & take dinner and party at night_ Ed choring feeding & a while at speaking_ Old Joseph Overholt here in forenoon to see about his money wanted the little note lifted again 1rst January 76_ I wrote letter for John McCourt & inclosed $10 which I left at McKees store (Pecleyburgh) next morning
December 4 1875 Saturday Fogey indicating rain but turned out a fine day_ I went to Carlton leaving here 10 minutes before 8 oclock arived by 11 left letter & cash $10.00 at store for John McCourt met his father as I come home he did not understand it_ I took an appeal & gave bond J. Carnahan bail for $100.00 in the case of amending the return of money reported_ I paid Rue & Crane cash $20.00 took their recept had summons served on me by Shereiff & home in good time_ Robert had arrived & on his way home with little Frank Expence to day in Carrolton for lunch at Colmans 10 Took feed for Mare & fed in Doc Scotts Stable
December 5 1875 Sunday Mild damp drisley rainey day at home feeding no one here_ Eds red & white cow had a heffer calf last night
December 6 1875 Monday Mild but verry muddey_ I went to Leesville expecting to settle with James Trip did not do it come home trough Bowerstown, Edward choring fixing his well bucket & put tong in old wagon etc etc Mary was at John M. Holmes and round among the neighbours I believe at Mikes_ Samantha went to Bowerston did not come back at night_ Robert gave me back the $10.00 I lent him on on last Monday 29th to bear expences
December 7 1875 Tuesday Cloudy damp day I at home Rob H. here again breakfast I helped fix up & start and I understood he went to Julia Smith stayed all night as the after noon turned out wet Theadore started over to Deersvill on trade stayed all night at Simontons_ Ed helping Mike to husk untill broke of by rain Eds wife & Sarah McPeck and Mrs Adams & son here for dinner Samanth left a while after dinner
December 8 1875 Wednesday I at home all day forenoon selecting lambs & repairing fence around calf lot forenoon Ed helping, After noon he went after sled soles Mary over to Sarah Fierbaughs I mend Theadores neck yoke
December 9 1875 Thursday (Written top of page: Brindle buld to day look below) Cloudey Cool day, Ed went to help Mike butcher_ I took Brindle cow to Overholts Bull got my dinner at Fierbaughes Ed home from helping Mike butcher & we took the two Shotes to bore and they were served, Then I went to Overholts after brindle cow went to feeding just as we got done Theo come with a little mule Jinney that he traded (for over beyond Deersvill) the Ike Long filley for that I greased so long giving boot $5.00 to Leeve Malony’s son
December 10 1875 Friday I at home frose last night Theadore here on his way home left at 10 oclock Ed soaling sleds_ Strayer from Jefferson County here trying to buy cattle I understood bought Mikes for $190.00 for 6 head for the best three steers $120.00 and the 3 yearlings $70.00 meeting him at old Valentine Trusals_ Then Strayer come and stayed at Isaac Heastons
December 11 1875 Saturday Snowey Blustry day though not cold_ First took the three steers to Laws to be waighed all 2920 lb The two gundy steers weighed 1880 leaving the best to weigh 1040 I did not pay for the waiging strayer come again but we could not deal_ After Ed & I went to fix barn yard to put in young cattle which took us till night or feeding time_ The first we put young cattle in stantials this winter
December 12 1875 Sunday Cloudey cold day Mary & Fred went over to Mikes after late breakfast I was busey feeding till after 10 oclock then sowed the rips in my buck mittens_ had a late dinner after Ed come up & stayed till we went to put in young cattle all went in nice tieing up the little bull calf
December 13 1875 Monday Cold & raw at home all day tending to the stock all I could do with Ed helping to tie the young cattle & nothing done but tending the stock all day it being too cold to go any whare too bad to eaven go to the mill
December 14 1875 Tuesday Verry cold & pretty hard freese I at home all day tending to the stock I believe Ed filled up some 14 bus wheat all was done on account of his being unwell
December 15 1875 Wednesday More Moderate Wind coming from the Southwest & began to snow like everything I went over to Fierbaugh to see aboiut a tub ot scauld hoggs and look at his stock and we come to the conclusion that the three best would waigh 28 hundred and the three smallest 21= 4900 at the out side got about 12 oclock and turned out a verry fine afternoon Mary went over to Mikes I cleaning out stable & feeding till night when I went down to the store & laid out 16 cts for spirits turp & soda
December 16 1875 Thursday Rather Moderate Mike here last night to get money to pay tax our road recepts amounting to over $8.00 besides the cash I gave him which was $36.60 being the first installment of this year_ Edward soaling sled in forenoon after noon took 14 bus wheat and 4 bus corn to Overholts Mill in Bowerstown to be ground again Saturday next_ Robert & Theadore come leaving the kit mare again Theadore got 2 bus wheat & Robert 2 bus potatoes & left for home
December 17 1875 Friday Turned in verry cold & sever At home all day tending to the stock onley while I went to look for tub to scald hoggs in for part of next week Mike cauled after night to leave the tax recepts
December 18 1875 Saturday Extreemley cold & hard freese I went to Leesburgh at 11 oclock got my dinner with Robert intending to settle with Trip I receaved $72.00 on rent of stor room counting his time from Nov 11th 74 till July 27th 75 Then M. Price took possession and is to pay for the ballance of the year but had not the time to do any thing with him to day so we put it off untill next Saturday when we agreed to meet again I got some groceries of Joseph for butter I took down and bot some Tobacco & Candy which I paid cash for amounting to 25 cts & come home
December 19 1875 Sunday Moderated & more mild but cold At home all day went to meeting forenoon & after to heare the Reverend Swan of Hagerston preach after dinner_ Busey feeding morning & evening no one here to day till after night when Mike & Sarah come to sit till 9 oclock
December 20 1875 Monday A mild fine day_ I went to Leesvill to see about the scales, sold it to M. Price for the promice of $17.50 though offering me the money on the street I telling him it would do on last of the week got my dinner with Theadore come home trough bowerstown for grist at Overholts Mill which I got, bringing Clide along to see the butchering the next day_ Theadore & family come bring his pig to drefs & help us_ Robert at Sherodsvill and did not see him_ got Joseph to change $5 to give T. Crawford $1.50 for barrel salt he is to send me when he gets to Steubenville
December 21 1875 Tuesday Fine mild day Though 2 or 3 little showers_ We butchered all night the help Mike Amuel colord Ed & Theadore & their wives to help red the guts_ Finley (Speor?) here to shoot the hoggs and not wanted_ I believe they paid the colored man in some spare ribbs Theadore stayed all night and help grind & make the sausage and finished up Strayer of Jefferson County here again trying to buy the steers but we could not deal
December 22 1875 Wednesday Fine warm but verry muddey Ed takeing home things we had borrowed to butcher with I busey feeding & tending the stock all day Theadore started home about 10 oclock forgetting his head halters_ Ed salted his and our meat
December 23 1875 Thursday Warm & fine weather_ Ed went to Bowerston Mill with 18 bus wheat in 9 baggs brought back 50 lb buck wheat flower which Joseph Overh is to take wheat for at $1.00 per bus and let me have the Buckwheat flower at three cents pr lb. I at home all day tending stock & churning my feet verry sore Isaac Heaston here for the wheat Ed owed him for seed 8 bushels
December 24 1875 Friday A verry wet forenoon the runs & creeks raised out over banks to over flow I at home all day tending to the stock At night went down to the meeting house to hear Musick singing and essays by the Sunday school scollers Mary & Fred along Contineaud till after 10 oclock at night
December 25 1875 Saturday A fine day high waters_ I went to Leesvill to article with Miradith Price but failed to accomplish it on account of the article not been drawn to please I receaved the money for the scale I sold on last Monday $17.50 got my dinner at Roberts and traded some butter to Joseph for sugar and come home before dark
December 26 1875 Sunday Rather a mild fine day till 4 oclock when it began to rain and fairley poured down after dark beating into the seller wetting under some potatoes which I had to move_ I at home all day tending to the stock Mary went to prayer meeting nobody here today seemed lonesome and dull
December 27 1875 Monday A fine morning turned some cooler but a verry fine day, last nights rain made verry high water out all over the bottom_ I at home all day, Frank Smith here a little while brought his Uncle Greenberry Hedge & daughter to ship them home to Wane County O__ Ed & I done nothing but feed the stock to day A fine evening for the season of the year
December 28 1875 Tuesday Fine but verry mudey_ Edward haul 2 loads cole from Thrawls one here & one for himself 40 bus in all I went to Scio to settle with Wait & Canaga the bal on Oats & Shingels got on 12th October last_ paid for 170 buck got of Cummins to fix grate left a pair of pants with Hence Taylor to make he agreeing to make them for one dollar I gave him 15 cts to buy thread & buttons_ Shislers here finishing the painting of the house outside
December 29 1875 Wednesday Fine day Ed hauled two more loads of Cole from thrawls 40 bushels leaving it all here Sarah Fierbaugh here trough the middle of the day on visit I takeing the children home at evening on Coley_ J. Umblebay cauled in eve to look at the horse legg_ I at home all day tending stock & choring Edward took 1 sack super flower to N. Boyer to pay on the cole worth $2.00 made out of best wheat is to let Wright have another
December 30 1875 Thursday Verry fine warm weather Ed haul some foder down to his stable helped me to haul gag of Oat straw up from barn to my stable in evening_ I went to Leesvill to see Robert & Theadore missed them Robert coming up here & was here when I got back Mary took cash out of my pocket book amounting to $1.25 so she said
December 31 1875 Friday A beautiful warm day Manuel Cristian here soon after breakfast for 12 1/2 lb Flower come to 50 cts to finish paying for helping butcher on 21st inst Mary gave hime some spare ribs & back bone on evening we butchered she said some 12 or 14 lbs in all worth some 62 or 75 cts Edward family & Mary went
