The Diary

February 1 1874 Sunday

            At home all day  hard freese  dry and cold  Mary & Ed went to hear Rev. Stevenson preach  Mandy went home with J. Heastons daughters after meeting_  James Overholt Mike & Sarah dined with us.

 

February 2 1874 Monday

            (Written top of page:  Dan to 1 load Wood  $1.00)

            At home all day  Ed & Dan haul wood forenoon  Hauld 3 loads  2 here for the house  1 load to Mahail Smiley which Dan is to pay for worth $1.00  After noon Dan Cut down large old stump of White oak tree below the barn above Fierbaughs little gate  Ed minding Fred while Mary and Mandy went to Mikes  Old john Crawford up here awhile I got bay horse shod all round by Butcher  paid him cash for  $1.10 two new shoes & 2 removes

 

February3 1874 Tuesday

            At home  Dan choping  fell a big tree in lower side of field in front of barn_  Edward got Mules shod all round  2 new shoes on Jack before & (6) removes  bill for shoeing $1.45 so said Edward  After dinner he drove mules to express to Leesburg  Amen Hurless here for dinner and stayed 2 or 3 hours  a kind of damp chilly air all day.

 

February 4 1874 Wednesday

            At home forenoon went to Leesville after dinner  Dan resting his sore hands  I bought him pant pattern triming lining & pr suspenders  pant pattern lining & trimings 2.50 suspenders .50  $3.00

            I brought up the little black mare to keep a while_  Edward got the mules shod with Butcher.

           

 

February 5 1874 Thursday

            At home all day  Dan Choping after done feeding below barn in old top and green tree in lower side of clover field till feeding time  Ed hauld up 3 loads wood from big rock below barn  after dinner took sled load hay chaff over on corner of rye & brought back load wood_  Theofalis Smith here engaging in grafting_ I went to Fierbaughs sawmill looking timber for Ox yokes and found it  back then to feeding.

 

Feb 6 1874 Friday

            At home all day feeding  Dan helping me shell corn before dinner  after dinner he went to chop a while at elm tree in orchard tinkering at jumper soles till I quit to go feed.  Edward went to Leesville for load cole for blacksmith Butcher  delivered to  Joseph Master said he hauld 25 bushels from J Prices bank_  quite snowy afternoon

 

Feb 7 1874 Saturday

            At home all day  all of forenoon soaling little sled did not get quite done before dinner  dan helping Ed getting rods to fastin shafts and tong on_  After dinner Ed took his mother to Mikes  guite a snow on the ground  Brethren protracted meeting going on _ Mandy had a Bough to night in parlor

 

February 8 1874 Sunday

            After feeding I cleaned up and went to Leesville_  All the rest went to Brethern meeting_  Theod wife child & Lilley here before the meeting commenced_  Lilley come with her granMother to dinner  was here when I come home  Dan away all day  did not be here to feed  scullering around at old John Trusals to see his cousin sude.

 

February 9 1874 Monday

            At home all day feeding  only while I shelled 1 1/2 bus corn and took it to Mill  Dan help forenoon  afternoon cutting wood for cousin Mahale

            Edward went to Leesville to help Theadore haul wood to the railroad with mules  hauled 4 loads  away all day  not back till after 7 oclock

            I am rather unwell with cold in my head  not very cold  thawing some in afternoon

 

February 10 1874 Tuesday

            After breakfast served subpoena on Wm Law come back and went to Bowerston to see if H Boor had the cant hook done  looked at Joseph Overholts cattle & home before dinner  Miss Shelts & Beckey Huff here for dinner_  I went over to Old Overholts after but missed my errand

 

February 11 1874 Wednesday

            At home all day  after feeding done Dan helped me sort sheep took till late dinner_  After dinner choped a couple hours at elm tree in orchard  did not make a good half day_  Had M. Gundy Mrs. Snary Mike & Sarah here for dinner_  Ed returned from Leesville soon after we was done dinner  After all went away and little or nothing done to day

 

February 12 1874 Thursday

            First after breakfast when done feeding I went down to station epecting to see J. Snary but mised him I went into see G. Adams  he was better, come back home & went to Leesville trou B. Overston & back home in eve same way getting little steel cant hook of Henry Boor which he said worth $1.00  did not pay for it as H Boor thought he owed it_  Left Dan choping at elm in orchard, soon after Isaac Channals come to split rails  took Dan to help Saying Ed went to meeting but after dinner  help Dan saw more rail lumber

 

February 13 1874 Friday

            At home all day  ranney & wettish  forenoon looking for wedge timber  Channels & Dan went out an hour before dinner  Ed and Mandy went to meeting  Channel and Dan out a while after dinner  split some 35 rails  broke off by rain  come in & was grinding axes till night  a wet afternoon  Dan went to get his pants_  This was day of Buchannans sale

 

February 14 1874 Saturday

            (Written top of page: Dan Little To 1 load wood 1.00/25 To cash on Sunday morning 15 inst)

            At home all day Channals & Dan went to split rails  Channels went home an hour after dinner

             Ed & I hauld a load hay to the sheep house_  Then he haul a load wood to Mahailey SM Smitley  Worth one dollar $1.00

            I letting cattle out & cleaning out stables etc. till dinner_ After I went over to Overholts to see him about Eds note but he would do nothing_  helping to feed till night but went out to see Dan before to tell him what to chop

           

February 15 1874 Sunday

            At home all day  protracted meeting going on at Brethern Church_  I gave Dan cash this morning  Twenty five cts to donate to the church  25 cts

            Mandy rode black mare home today  back in evening_  Nobody here to day  Sie Long brought his cow to the bull this evening and he served.

 

February 16 1874 Monday

            Forenoon Family went to Brethern chruch  namely Mary Ed Fred Mandy & Dan Little  none of them back till 2 oclock_  I was out with Isaac Channals showing him what to do in the way of makeing rails_ After dinner sent Dan out with him to saw off two large rail cuts before his tending to the feeding _  Edward & I fixed up to go to Cadiz to tend court  got as far as J M Peck & stayed with him all night

 

February 17 1874 Tuesday

            Edward & I left J.M. Pecks this morning for Cadiz  did not away thare till after 10 1/2 oclock  our case did not come on that day on account of Moors being on hand & lasted all that day  got our dinner supper at the Swan house and lodged then left our mules with McCormick at rate of 65 cts pr day

 

February 18 1874 Wednesday

            Morning at Swan house  after breakfast went to court  my case enter first and took till noon to get done with  witnesses Eslep made his first speech ajourned & went to dinner_  After the pleading done jury went out about 3 oclock_  Ed & I stayed till 4 pm  they were not done then so we left for home and arived home soon after 8 pm oclock all safe & sound_  Expenses as follows  T Swans bill $3.00 for 4 meals & 2 lodgings each_  McCormicks livery bill $1.75/100 for 2 mules 1 1/3 days

 

February 19 1874 Thrusday

            (Written top of page: Channels to Flower & corn $2.35 Tobacco of Edward)

            At home all day  Isaac Channels here make rails sent him by Edward 50 lb Flower and 1/2 bus corn also Mrs. Barns 50 lb Flower. Dan Little away all night  not back till near 10 oclock  went to help I. Channels to saw 2 rail cuts then choping & sawing up tree top bal of day till feeding time  Ed went to Leesburgh express and mules  not back till after night  Channels went home about 4 oclock so said Dan Little.

 

February 20 1874 Friday

            (Written top of page: His pretty cow buld to day as he says)

            At home all day  only while I went down to station to hear the result of law suit by J. Howards letter  Channels did not get back till near 11 oclock  I ground his axe at dinner  set cross cut saw & sent Dan with him to saw off some rail cuts and I consider they made good speed after all_

            Edward away all day hunting up towards Perryville

 

February 21 1874 Saturday

            At home all day and a very wet one too  Isaac Channels left awhile after breakfast_  Dan Little sived 6 bus wheat too go to Mill_

            Edward was down in town and (coustering?) around

 

February 22 1874 Sunday

            At home all day  a Wettish dull day and very high water  every thing was drowned_  Ed Mandy Dan & Fred all went to Brethern Church None of them back for dinner but Daniel Mary & I alone till near night  after I went down to Squire Johnstons  he was not at home  met Willes Law thare & left there in company with Samuel

            Our seller full of water  hardley know what to do with it  the 3rd time this winter.

 

February 23 1874 Monday

            A damp cloudy morning  after feed commenced to pump water out to seller  concluded to quit it and dig a drain which dan was at most of the day  after Michal was here on his way to town  I done but little my self only lay it off for Dan & see some to the feeding ect etc_  I borrowed Joseph Peabody post digger & crow bar

 

February 24 1874 Tuesday

            At home all day  Dan diging drean from seller all day_  Edward haul 3 loads wood from large tree top in lower side of field opposite of barn and took 6 bus of wheat to Mill before dinner_ After dinner helping Dan in drean_

            Channels come before dinner to go make rails  done nothing before his dinner_  While at dinner Robert come to tell about his imbarisment and of his going to Cadiz  left for home about 4 oclock.

            Ed & I went to feeding  a fair day

 

February 25 1874 Wednesday

            At home all day  Channels split rails till dinner_  After feeding Ed & Dan went to haul some dry wood for fire place  haul 3 loads  I out helping till dinner  after they hauld load hay over to sheep house then quit  Channels went home  not working after dinner_ A snowey blustery day_  Mary went over to Michaels, not home at 9 oclock  stayed thare all night & next day till after dinner time when Ed went after with jumper

 

February 26 1874 Thursday

            At home all day  only while I rode over to Mikes to see how the child was  Dan choping wood at house all the forenoon  after dinner Ed htched up & hauld 2 loads wood from the Elm tree in orchard  Dan & I choped a little while & then they went to haul Manuer from stable door to let it open till feeding time

 

February 27 1874 Friday

            At home all day hauling saw loggs to Fierbaugh saw Mill  Dan Cutting down a tree at line fence beyond elm_  James Sprown here for dinner  cut up the tree and got two 14 foot loggs to the Mill hauld 6 tie logs and two post loggs besides it

 

February 28 1874 Saturday

            After feeding and cleaning myself up about 1/2 after 10 oclock I went to Leesburgh  dined with Robert_  After 3 oclock went to Dan Weyandts  1 pr short Boots which he said was worth $5.00  not home till after dark  spent in Leesville for Tob 10 cts Candy 5 = 15

            Dan Little hauling dung most of day with mules to sled out on knubs on wheat stuble  some 6 loads  Said Edward some unwell with boil on back of his neck
