February 1 1875 Monday

            Frose hard cold good sleding  Mary and I went to Leesburg big sled & mules for furniture_ got 1 joint stove pipe 7 in of Ed Benadum cost 50 cts for Cook stove  home before night  Mrs Beadle here  Ed away after his wife  Robert & John Soils had some angry words began in post office_ Theadore start to Levittsville  Bob to Bowerstown

 

February 2 1875 Tuesday

            I went to Uhrichville after breakfast  got dinner at bro Johns bot 1 pr artic over shoes $175 two prs minors shoes $3.00  met Robert & Theadore in Uhrichville with load potatoes sold to Wm John Smith  started for Leesburgh at 6 oclock PM. I stayed all night with John_ Fare from Bowerston 55 cts my ticket not (alled?) after going down

 

February 3 1875 Wednesday

            In Uhrichville this morning  raining  Left for home 13 minutes after 7 oclock AM  home 1/2 after 8 oclock  Smith Donnel choping wood after takeing Latheys cow to Bull Overholts  I brought him 1 pr Minor Shoes $2.00 after din I paid Clendening 36 cts frait on my one barrel salt_ Turned clear windey and cold hard freese_ The boys brought the Bull home with the cows and here yet on 9th inst

 

February 4 1875 Thursday

            A verry cold blustry morning extreme hard freesing_ After breakfast I started to Leesburg on Coley to tend Law suit with Fred Senft  the jury  Wm Clark  Old Bran  J Easterday  J. Price  Hen Barrick  T Ligitt  Verdict in favor of defindant  I to pay the cost proving contrary  R.H advanceing trough spring cash $100.00 and $5.00 bear expences to lift Bloomingdale & Riney note  The trial contineaud till night  I staying all night with Robert  Donnel feeding & pound Homany  I paid JJ Smith cash for 1 Barrel salt $1.65

 

February 5 1875 Friday

            Very cold hard fresing _ In Lees this morning till 11 oclock whin I left for home trough Bowerston to get my Boots which D Weyandt bottomed and left at C McDains post office which I suppose was done on Wednesday 3rd inst  cost at least $1.50  come home trough J Lyons place  Donnel hauling wood forenoon  mules

 

February 6 1875 Saturday

            Still cold & hard fresing at home all day all forenoon dressing horse  Donnel feeding & pound more homeny to take to Leesburgh  I went down to Eds & station after noon done little or nothing else to day  Ed bought pigg of Dan Fierbaugh $2.00  Went to I Heastons  said he could buy another of him for $4.00  Isaac Heaston had some of Mikes sheep which they had some words about  Elle Barns come to visit Mary  They went to Brethern protracted meeting

 

February 7 1875 Sunday

            Cold hard freesing  I at home all day  salt sheep & cattle down at barn but kept pretty close to the fire most of the time onley while helping Donnel feed  Mandey Elle & all the rest went to Brethern meeting  Mandey & Eley went from meeting with friends visiting  after night meeting David gallanted Mandy home & sat up with her

 

February 8 1875 Monday

            Verry cold & hard freesing water all shut up  I at home all day  onley while I went with Ed to I Heaston for pig  price $4.00  I paid down on it $3.00 owing yet one dollar  brought it home & went with Donnel down to station for barrel salt  Coleman Preacher here for dinner  Ed & wife after dinner I dressed horses legg  Smith feeding and keeping up fire and as much as he could do it was so cold

 

February 9 1875 Tuesday

            Extreme cold & hard fresing, after breakfast I took some homany to buy in Leesburg  bot 15 cts worth of tobacco of Joseph  dined with RH  paid Lawyer fee to I Price and got his recpts for $42.00 left $8.00 with Robert for L Hunt takeing $20.00  got two old vests of Robert and 1 pr jeans pants stained for Donnel  come home before night

 

 

February 10 1875 Wednesday

            Still verry cold dry hard freesing  water scarce for stock & pump in bad order  At home all day  dressed horse after dinner with poultice of fat bacon  Rob & Theadore come up after dinner got some butter of Wilson  Robert staying all night to go to Carlton in morning  Donnel took sick at middle of day with cold and lay by  I doing all the feeding  went down to station after supper

 

February 11 1875 Thursday

            Snowed last night & thawed some  up earley  Robert & I started Carlton  thare 11 & 1/2 oclock  Dinner & horse fed  Van Horn cost $1.25/100 consulted with Shober & Railey Also with Judge McCoy and sid it would be necessary for me to be thare on 22nd inst next Monday a weed  got trough & left 1/2 after 2 oclock  Left the Hunt & Joseph Johnsons recpt & brought back I T Pr & J Johnson seventy five recpt  Had a cold stormey ride home by the way of Hagerstown  parting with Robert  Man away all day at meeting & her sister Elley

 

February 12 1875 Friday

            At home all day helping Donnel & Ed get up load straw then Donnel went to pound mefs homany & Ed to meeting  I watering the stock  a snowey afternoon  I done but little more than drefs the horse  Donnel done the feeding & carry in wood  good slaying

 

February 13 1875 Saturday

            Extreme good sleding  I went to Leesburg about 11 oclock  Ed wife & chil at Joseph visiting  got mules shod by J Moselay  6 removes 75 & 1 pr new shoes on Alick bet 75 and 1 toe all for $1.50 to be entered on his note_ I got back plate for cook stove of Wm Chase if it suits to be $1.25  Theadore wife & child come up and stayed all night  bought Ab Prices mare or traded a watch & 4 sacks flower & cash $4.00 or worth of it in cole  Donnel feedng & cutting wood all day snowey & cold_ Robert gave me all the accounts & notes

 

February 14 1875 Sunday

            Splendid slaying  at home all day  Theadore hitched up his new mare & took all hands Ed & family to Brethern Church  Joseph & family drove up just after they started with Peter Prines  sled & teem_ slayed till 5 oclock when all went home  Donnel tending stock  I helping some  wrote a letter to Abraham Wolf for Robert

 

February 15 1875 Monday

            Up earley verry cold fine sleying  Robert & Theadore come at 9 oclock and Robert & I started to Cadiz  there again 12 oclock drove Nance & coley  Warmed in the Bank  went & got a cup of coffee & crackers cost 20cts  then deposited certificate of deposit that I got of J Tripp cauling for $560.00 and a draft I got of Theadore for some $92.00  Then got letter of recomend of McFadden & Kinsey Welsh & Brown left for home 4 oclock & arived at 7 oclock  Robert rather thinking he would stay in Cadiz this night  I gave him the Russell note bill at Housers for feed horses 40 cts in all including coffee & 60  Donnell feed & cut wood  Ed for cole

 

February 16 1875 Tuesday

At home onley while I went to see rick  Donnel feed  pound homany & cut wood  I gave him 10 cts to buy Tobacco  I gave Edward $1.00 to go for cole to Zeotts  not back till 3 oclock  I was choring round  pumping water & helping feed_ I understood from Mary Theadore & wife & child was visiting at Mikes all day.  The Brethern meeting broke up night before that I come from Cadiz

 

February 17 1875 Wednesday

            At home all day  Ed went to Zats bank for load cole for him self  I helping Smith feed  after he went down below barn to cut wood  in eve he & Ed hauld up here 3 loads  Wm Johnston here in forenoon putting in Mrs Adams account  Eds wife & Sarah McPeck here for dinner  I tending the stock  David Arbaugh of Fairview here in evening to look at cattle  asked if two hundred dollars would buy them

 

February 18 1875 Thursday

            Ed went to Zats bank for load cole for me  Mary & I went to Leesburgh through Bowerston  Nance & Coley  not back till near night when Ed hitched to jump to go a visiting up in neighborhood of fairview_ I paid out cash for Tobacco 90 for goods  Mary bot for Mandy $1.80  Smith done but little more than feed & then hardley pumped water anough for the stock at barn_ I gave him Tobacco when I come home 10 cts cash 50=60

 

February 19 1875 Friday

            More snow fell last night  Mary at Mikes all night and not home to day at 12 oclock  I read an hour or more in bed before dinner  after went to post office then to Mikes  back soon to clean out Eds stable  he away visiting  his cow showed sine of frolicking  Donnel choping a little wood and help me with Eds cow & clean out his stable  got mad when we come up to the house & left Ed house just at dark after Smith left

 

February 20 1875 Saturday

            Splendid slaying after doing up the chores  11 oclock I went to Leesville Nance & Coley jumper alone  dined Theadore bought Lamp & 1 gal oil of Joseph all for 65 cts  got 3 prong fork of Robert  Garret Rahel Frank & J Moors wife & child home with me  Theadore wife & children include Carry soon followed to visit Edward who went home after helping me feed to receave them  I receaved a letter from Robert Philadelp pa  Rachel a mother_ An acpt from I Price & a little one from Nixon

 

February 21 1875 Sunday

            (Written top of page: Brindle cow buld this evening Februry 21rst 1857) 

            At home all forenoon rather mild  splended slaying  Mandey had bow last n  Rode Nance home to day  I washed & greased horses leg before dinner, after 2 oclock I started for Carlton  Express  to stay all night with Syvester Tripp but found nobody at home thare so I went to Moodeys and the bill for mare 3 feeds my lodging breakfast & dinner $1.25  Edward took Brindle cow to overholts  Bull and he said he served her  brought bull here over nigh

 

February 22 1875 Monday

            A mild night  commenced thawing  at Moddeys  went to Carlton after the breakfast  Railey told me Taylor of New Philadelphia took exceptions to my account, so thursday 4th March st for testing it  Harvey Eckley attorney  Left at 12 oclock for Moodeys  fed mare got dinner & started home here by 4 oclock  bill $1.25  It thawed so fast in afternoon that the road was a perfect slush and at the runs and ravines quite swollen

 

February 23 1875 Tuesday

            A clear warm morning  thawed all nigh and will about finish the snow to day_ At home forenoon  after feeding prepaired poultice lome & put to horses legg  went for 1 lb Nails  mended stall between Jack & Alick_ Went to Leesburgh after 1 oclock  read letter Rachel got from Bob to day  mailed in wheeling yesterday 22nd  talked some with Joseph & Theadore  pd Wm Chase for back plate of cook stove $1.25  got on 13th inst the day Jim Moreland shod the mules  paid to Clendening for nails 5 cts making 1.30 out to day  home at dark on Nance  paid for postage stamp & stationary $2.40

 

February 24 1875 Wednesday

            Warm & slushey  at home all day regulating probated acpt from creditors and looking over my own  cloncluded not to lave home  it being so slushey  stuck close to the house all day  at night took poultice off of horses legg  washed & greased it well  tied him up so he could not bite it  it looks bad & discouraging

 

February 25 1875 Thursday

            Wet & stormey day  I went to Leesville at 11 oclock by Bowerston  rained on me all the way  dined with Theadore  Joseph went to Jefferson County  no account from Robert since tuesday when he wrote the day before from Wheeling  got some news papers & come home through the snow  rode Aleck Mule & come through Hagerstown

 

February 26 1875 Friday

            Frose last night  at home all day looking over my acpt & drawing it off on a fresh sheet paper  Thawed considerably after midle of day  nearley all the snow gone

 

Februray 27 1875 Saturday

            Hard freese last night and verry cold  I rode Coley to Leesburgh at 11 oclock got verry cold  got dinner with Theadore  looked round a while  done nothing  Robert not home yet but learned he got home after dark being away since morning of the 15th Inst_ I left Leesville soon after 3 oc bringing the 2 Ledgers in a bag Theadore lent me  come in time to help to feed   I saw Tresket in Leesville going into Trips store

 

February 28 1875 Sunday

            Frose & snow on the ground  cold disagree day  Robert rode beck mare up about 11 oclock & stayed till 1/2 after 3 oclock  said he would be on hand to go to Carrolton on eve of 3rd or earley on morning of 4th inst  Moderating some & I ressed horses legg with dry lime & tied dirty cloth over it
