The Diary

April 20 1872 Saturday

            I went to Leesville through Hagerstown to see Robert Before starting to Philadelphia Pa.-.and to get Bet Mare shod before  got two new shoes put on before by Rob  told him Robert would settle for it-also told Joseph Johnson & Theadore to credit Baker with it that it was for his  Roberts H. business  I was getting her shod to attend to  after come home through Bowerstown to attend school election and I was a candidate for Director but was beat by Isaac Masters by one vote.

 

April 21 1872 Sunday

            At home all forenoon feeding and doing up chores till noon Theadore come with his wife Lide Clide baby and boy before dinner went on to his mother in laws leaving Lidy and children here for dinner  after I prepared to start for Cadiz  did not get started before 4 O'clock in eve  looked like rain all the evening  only got to John McPeeks  stayed there all night, had my supper and mare fed and made welcome and comfortable after breakfast  before leaving I made present of fifteen cts each to his two little boys = 30cts.

 

April 22 1872 Monday

I started from J. McPeeks after breakfast about 7 0'clock for Cadiz falling in company with Wm S.Osburn after I met Tom Baker takeing load oats to Fairview-  put up my mare with Bill Houser.  cost me 25cts  Went to First National Bank and got Draft on First National Bank New York for Eighteen hundred dollars and mailed it before 11o'clock A.M. for Phil.  gave the $800.00 Robert gave me on the Friday before in stable and the 800.00 I recd of Aunt M. Dean which I receaved on 19th March and drew ballance out of Bank drew $274.00 on account using $75. of Mrs Deans for Theadore

            After went in and saw judg Lemmon and appointed latter part of May to settle up the Estate.

            Then started for home with out any din  come by Beckets  home again 4p.m. but was very cold and after I got some refreshment went to feeding and just before dark sold black horse to Mansfield for cash had to give $175.00 a leather halter with him.

 

April 23 1872 Tuesday

            Went to Overholts field to harrow before grain Drill to sow Oats with Bet mare and Frank horse, but did not get out till after dinner  Mike drove Drill with Mules  I am wrong  it was late start after breakfast and had to bring back the Oats and run them through the ? Mill  Edward helping old Dan before dinner and after took the Oxen & and low wagon and went to Ed Lockrages for load hay and did not get back till after night so Ed spent the whole day and oxen & wagon the after noon

 

April 24 1872 Wednesday

            I was harrowing all day at Overholts before Mike with Drill and Michal very reluctantly stayed the after noon on account of his saying his both teems was idle

            Edward went to fix the fence over the creek to let the cattle have range and did not get done until midle of after noon = when he met with young Greenwalt and attacked him to hire.

            Michal Fierbaugh got the pair of largge shoes I got of John Robey in Leesville  they were verry little warn and worth $3.00 three dollars.

 

April 25 1872 Thursday

            Harrowing at Overholts the forenoon  Michal Drilling  finished sowing before dinner and bought home plows & harrow  Michal left Drill at schoolhouse untill after dinner and then I went with him to harrow

            I hired young Greenwalt this morning after breakfast at the rate of $12.00 per month washing & mending in and when either gets displeased to quit.

            Edward and greenwalt at Fierbaugh all day helping  used Oxen some in forenoon and plowed down at saw mill after noon, and did not get back till after night on account of unloading wagon to bring it home.

 

April 26 1872 Friday

            After I got ready about 11 o'clock Mary and I went to Leesville  Edward went over to Fierbaugh with Mules to plow and plowed all day-  Greenwalt hauling manure with oxen all day.

            I brought home $1.00 worth cole from Prices bank, 1 pint castor oil for lantern-  paid Theadore for cole Oil & all I got  I dont know what Mother got on tick.

 

April 27 1872 Saturday

            W. Greenwalt to cash on his work $1.00  got Frank horse to ride to Freeport  to return tomarrow- Edward hauling manure all day, I feeding and doing chores close at home all day-  In after noon shaved and commenced to write in this Diary for the first.

 

April 28 1872 Sunday

            At home all forenoon and just got washed up before dinner as Mary come from prayer meeting.

            While Mary and I was at dinner about 1 o'clock Edward returned from the dedication of the Christian Union Church up at the Bakersfield school house and Whit returned from Freeport on Frank horse and had him pretty warm.

            After dinner I went to Leesville to see if Robert had got home  he had  I stayed but a short time and returned back through Hagerstown

            Whit Greenwalt got back again 1/2 after 1 o'clock and had Frank horse prette warm.

 

April 29 1872 Monday

            A fine clear warm morning  started the plow in the corn stubble with Whit & mules  Ed & I then went to prepare grist of corn & rye for chop feed  gave I. Masters 50 lbs to grind it without tolling  8 bushels  five corn & three rye  Ed spread manure in garden  after commenced plowing it with the oxen and they done well but we did not got done by 1\3 of it Whit was plowing all day.

 

April 30 1872 Tuesday

            Warm and sultry  Whit at plow with the Mules all day-  Ed & I finished the garden and then Ed harrow it with the oxen before diner-  After dinner I went up to G. Easterdays to see his nursery etc etc  A. English there buying evergreens-  I went on to Solomon Smiths for the 4 yearlings which was there one month for four dollars to $1.00 per head  I gave him order on R.H Smith store for $6.00  two dollars of it for straw.

            Looked stormy and rained just as I got home and it was much needed.

 

May 1 1872 Wednesday

            Wettish morning but went out to plow runing two teams  Whit plowing mules  I Bet & frank but broke of about 10 oc by shower_  but went out again about 4 oclock and finished  the land intended for oats  Whit & Ed plowed while I cut straw

 

May 2 1872 Thursday

            Whit & I went up to I. Heastons after breakfast to change oats

            Ed went after Drill as soon as got readey commenced sowing before dinner, got done again

            Whit hauling Ash pile with oxen, while I harrowed and Edward drilled in Oats

            James Overholt over at night and I knew he wanted some favor of Edward

            Amon Hurless & S. Easterday come just as we was going to dinner to alter little Rocket colt  first thing after dinner, ordered the clamps to be left on untill earley on saturday morning

 

May 3 1872 Friday

            Edward went to help J. Overholts to plow and harrowing his Oats_  Whit went to mill with oxen for chop feed complained of spraining his wrist so to favor him we went to taging sheep_  After we were trimming 2 Apple trees till feeding time when Ed got home from Overholts

 

May 4 1872 Saturday

            I was busy all day at home  first thing took clamps off Rocket

            After breakfast Edward call and Children  Whitt & Ame Masters all went to Leesville  Whit said he got pants vest & pocket knife on my account some over $8

            Jesh Forseythe & teem here for his diner & horses feed to meet his brother to take him to Freeport

 

May 5 1872 Sunday

            A beautiful morning but a sharp frost as also yesterday morning a sharp frost

            S. Hedges come here with Mary & Edward from Brethern church before dinner  after dinner Edward went to Leesville for Cal & Fred Hedges got Bet to go to Deersville left about 4 pm oclock

            Whit went away after breakfast and did not return till after night

 

May 6 1872 Monday

            Fine dry day  Edward & Whit hauling manure from stable & chip yard all day with oxen  I helped while I was not tending sheep & cattle  Edward & Whit went to fix gate & fence between us & Wm. Johnson joining creek oppesite Demings lot then hauled Load wood to W. Johnson

            This was my birth day

 

May 7 1872 Tuesday

            Edward & Whit hauling manure out of calf lot with oxen & low wagon all day  hauld some 12 loads

            S. Hedges come back from deersville a little after 10 oclock brought his mare just as Mary an I was starting to Leesville with Mules for load cole for A. Trusell  brought her 20 bus from J.Price Bank  measured by Jerry West which I paid Robert for_  We Robert & I gave new note to Mary Dean dated from 1st April last extending for three years with eight per cent intrust to be paid simi annually cauling for eight hundred dollars $800.00

            After I took pant pattern to be made & vest fixed to cotter & pant & vest for Edward all to be made for $4.00  left 70 cts which Ed paid him for cutting

            gave Robert cash $10 ten dol to meet S. Smith order of six dols for straw & pasture $26.00

 

May 8 1872 Wednesday

            After doing up the chores I went to Wm Parmers sale on Bet, left Ed & Whit hauling manure from below barn & at it all day

             I gave Mother yesterday eve $16.00 sixteen dollars to pay Robert for Carpet & oil cloth  in all that eve $26.00

            After leaving sale I come home to Masterville  hitched up Mules and went to Lees after Mary  having left her there eve before on account of hauling load cole & appearance of rain

            J. Holmes rode home with us on Lounge & Turkey tick

May 9 1872 Thursday

            After getting things done I fixed up and went to Deersville to collect acpt on Thos McIlroy but failed

            Edward & Whit at manure below barn with oxen & low wagon

            Rode Frank to Deersville leaving here about 11 oclock A.M. & I stayed there till 1/2 after 6 in evening

            JJ got home this eve from Philadelphia Pa-

 

May 10 1872 Friday

            Edward & Whit finished Manure at barn Early after dinner with oxen & cart under barn__  Ben Johnson come up & got low wagon

            Mike come up & got Mules & Express for his Father to go to Bowerston

            I went to Leesville after dinner to see if Joseph had got home and bought palm hat & garden seeds to ampt 10cts and did not get home untill after night on account of show bet mare to Bill Wilson

            Boys got done manure soon after dinner & went put up fence between corn field & pasture

 

May 11 1872 Saturday

            Ed & Whit spreading manure on corn field planting seeds in garden  washed off top Bugey & other chores

            I was mending haulters besides other fixing  home all day S.Hedges come back at night from Wheeling

 

May 12 1872 Sunday

            At home all day  went to meeting fore & after noon Rev Hagge preached

            Theadore & wife passed up to Englishes & Lesle took her Mother back home with her

 

May 13 1872 Monday

            Commenced plowing for corn  Whit with mules & Edw & I with Hedges mare & Frank Hedges left for Uhrichville 11 oclock, I remained at plow all day opening up lands down on sod and [shapeing]

for left & right hand plows_ Edward changed Hedges mare for Bet to lead in plow

 

May 14 1872 Tuesday

            Whit & Edward went to plow as usual, till I got trough with chores then went and took Edwards place, to let him go help J. Overholts to plant corn  I plowing with Bet & Frank till noon_  when I took out Hedges mare in place of Bet  Edward getting back about 4 oclock p.m., took took my place & I went to feed sheep & salt cattle over creek which kept me untill night

 

May 15 1872 Wednesday

            Whit & Edward went to plow  I fixed up and took old bugey to Leesville with Bet  got there about 1 oclock  dined with Theadore then got Baker to put a new set of l inch Pins & washers on bugey and Joseph's Express wagon shafts allined for new express, left it at shop & brought up Roberts pig in his Express with george & princes horses  did not get back till night when boys got done plowing for corn  I left Bet mare in leesburgh

 

May 16 1872 Thursday

            Whit went to help Mike Fierbaugh plant corn

            Edward commenced harrowing down on sod

            I went to look for John Holmes little plow found it at Crawfords  took Alick mule and run off his lot which took me till dinner, brought home plow and commenced runing off my own after dinner till night

 

May 17 1872 Friday

            Whit went out after breakfast to run off with Alick but was not doing well and I sent him to trim sugar tree_  Edward harrowing I running off when Mickal come & went home for Fan about 9 oclock & he & I run off and got done about 2 1/2 oclock when Phillip & Jim Overholt come & we commenced planting and worked on till night

 

May 18 1872 Saturday

            Whit only half day

            Phillip half day planting

            James Overholt half day

            Michal & Andrew 1/2 day all planting corn finished again noon_ After dinner Edward went to Bowerstown to see Joseph Overholts about note  come home by J. Lyons to see Jason Duning and bargained for his Mothers property at $1300.00  $500.00 in hand and $800.00 in two installments yearly with $30.00 interest on last payment from 1 June next Whin deed to be Executed

            S. Hedges come here from Uhrichville & he & I fixed and went to Leesville on Roberts Express wagon with george & Frank horses  suped with J.J.  rained a fine shower while there come home late with Bet mare & old bugey

 

May 19 1872 Sunday

            Wet morning & coldish  all well and at home at 10 oclock I took down the last weeks notes

 

May 20 1872 Monday

            Whit & I went to shear sick sheep first thing after breakfast he and Edward went to Overholts to see about washing his sheep_ S. Hedges got bet mare to go to Deersville   I hitched up mules to take Mother & Sarah to Leesville_  Come right back to keep Ed & Whit from killing granny heffer calf but to late it was killed & weighed as follows

            Then brought Mother & Sarah home  Ed & Whit gathering up manure _  after night when I got home

 

May 21 1872 Thuesday

            Whit took oxen to Lees for load cole of J. Price 29 1/4 bushels paid Robert for

            Edward working on roads with mules to scraper & wagon

            Robert renewed note to Mrs. Colwell for borrowed money to amount of $240.00 dated from 1st of last April 1872 I got the old one date April 1st 1867___

            I went to Leesville at 11 oclock after Whit & we dined with Theadore  I Drove Hedges mule & Prince  brought home Suleys calf n express wagon

            Sam Hedges got backe with bet mare and collected of T McIlrow bal on note to Estate of R. Smith $37.56

 

May 22 1872 Wednesday

            Whit & Edward went to haul manure ["to put" crossed out] with oxen to low wagon on lot back of garden 3 loads  2 from barn & 1 from hog pin  B.Johnson come to borrow gun, after hauling manure commenced to plow with oxen, it was showery & I took the mules to finish while Whit & Edward went to making gates___

            S. Hedges started for Urichville on 11 oclock train

            It was so showery in afternoon that it kept me till night to finish harrowing & marking off

            The boys planted a fine [bag row] potatoes

 

May 23 1872 Thursday

            Whit first after breakfast went down town after bet mare that went out at gate  I follow her to Fierbaughs who was preparing to go build dam to wash sheep  I sent Whit to fix at his property, After dinner Whit & I went down to haul manure which kept them till night__   

            Michal washed his sheep by himself

 

May 24 1872 Friday

            Whit & Edward went to wash sheep I went & got Abe Warner to help  Paid him 60 cts A.Hurless come up here  paid him for altering colt 1.00

            S. Hedges come off of train from Uhrichville  I traded him Bet Mare for his Fan Mare by his booting me cash $100.00 paid seventy five in hand  note for twenty five

            got done washing sheep again dinner when Hedges left for Deersville & Edward & Whit went down to his place to plow lot & garden I went to salt cattle & sheep

 

May 25 1872 Saturday

            Whit & Edward down makeing gardain at his place all day

Mary and I went to Leesville I took 90 feet ash boards to W.D.Mool at 2.50 pr [hme] 2.25 took Butter & potatoes to Robert go goods over to ampt $19.80/100 Fan & prince & express wagon bought same back with Molasses Barrell & some Boxes

 

May 26 1872 Sunday

            At home all day  Robert and family here with Mrs. Colwell and took back Fan and Prince. I went to salt cattle after Whit along__ Went up to Strawls after to see if I could get N. Boyer but failed.

 

May 27 1872 Monday

            Whit left us after breakfast this morning having only put in 23 days of his month receaved $9.00 of his pay__

            I went down to Fierbaughs to see about getting him to alter the lambs, but he thought it too wet, and put it off__  After Edward and I went down to station for New Stove  Freight on it 71 cts,  I bought some old belt leather of I. Masters to amount of 30 cts-  come up and unloaded stove with help of Bell Johnson & P. Smilley, then took old cook stove to Eds and While unloading come up a big rain,  After dinner I start to Deersville & Bro Williams for piggs and wagon lathers--got supper at Simontons then went on to Williams

            Robert Simonton come here and stayed all night with Mary while I was away.

 

May 28 1872 Tuesday

            At brother Williams this morning, got Eds hay lathers and two piggs weighing each 100 lbs & 120 lbs at 5 cts per lb-  $11.00 to be kept acpt of till we meet again,  I then come to Deersville and gave F.T. Simonton T.McIllroys note cauling for $83.33/100 bearing intrest for two years  Johnston counted it up to 9th inst making all of $93.73/100__ Emma come home with me_  After dinner I took the piggs to Leesville and bought back $1.00 worth of cole for Edward which I gave the money to Theadore for Bob getting Price to charge him 

            Robert Simonton Come just before we went to bed

 

May 29 1872 Wednesday

            At home all day forenoon  D. Fierbaugh altered 23 lambs and cut tails off of 21 ewe lambs  in all 44 altered  1 calf and 4 piggs_  Robert Simonton left for home_  Brown of [plum run] and his hand young Levin here for dinner-  after noon feed sheep & salt young cattle

            Edward took down cole & went for straw to put in under [Ticks] then hung gate and filled up rut at gate  after took down his cows

            This was a fine day.

 

May 30 1872 Thursday

            At home all day  after feeding sorting corn & carry it to new crib to shell_ Washed out soak barrel & put alot of corn to soak

            Edward went to Bowerston to testify for Donaldson

            Theadore there too Edw said he brought over a runner

            This morning was wet

            Kitty [Simkins] here helping Mary sew up bed tick and change feathers into it

            Edward got very sick this evening with old complaint vometed and had to stay all night he got so weak

 

May 31 1872 Friday

            At home all day  after breakfast when chores done up I went & got Phillip to help me shell some 6 bushels corn_  After dinner I took it to mill, and about all I done but feed the sheep and chores about the house

 

June 1 1872 Saturday

            After Breakfast Edward and I went to haul brush off of the medow which kept us till noon_

            After dinner about all I done was to bring up meal from the mill being some unwell_  At night Edward brought up Rogers & son to hire_ which I did conditionally and he agreed to send him up next Monday morning on trial at $12.00 per month and wants more if I think him worth it

 

June 2 1872 Sunday

            After breakfast when I cleaned up I went to Leesville on George horse took dinner with J.J. Smith Aunt Mary Dean & Mrs. Bell McCullough of Jefferson Co  After sat a while with Robert H. Smith & come home through Bowerson a very fine warm day

 

June 3 1872  Monday

            Charley Rodgers come on according to contract after breakfast and helped Edward to hoe potatoes sive grist wheat for mill and replant corn

            Mary Emma & I went to Leesville, Bought Queens ware stone ware & wash tub I paid cash over her butter $1.63 to Theadore

            I got a new shirt from Lida which she said she paid Widow Demster for makeing 75 cts  I gave Lide cash to settle it $1.00

            Left Wm. Emma there and come home in eve trough Bowerston with Sarahs things

 

June 4 1872 Tuesday

            Charley Rodgers choring around and fixing barn with Edward in forenoon to shear sheep-  afternoon they went to cut thissels over in field below wheat-  I was mending some straps and salting stock drisley treatning rain and got quite cool in evening-

            Mr. G. Adams & Mrs. Pulan school teather suped with us in eve- Edward put up the weather's lot of sheep to sheer

            After supper I went to look for shearers but only went to Fierbaughs when I altered my notion & come back and let out sheep went down to town with Michal to change shears & visit A. Trusal

 

June 5 1872 Wednesday

            Charley & Edward went after breakfast to help Fierbaughs replant and put plaster on cornfield

            I fixed up and (took Mary and Emma to Leesville in express with **this text crossed out) mules (through Hgertown-**crossed out)

I went to Bowerston to get nails Lamp black spirits turpintine wool turn and to see about other things but Robert was not at home  went to Carlton  I come home trough Bowerston  Jason Deming here  made & gave over Deeds to Edward and we signed two notes to one coming due 1rst June 1873 for $400.00 The other coming due 1rst June 1874 for $430.00

 

June 6 1872 Thursday

            Charley Edward Michal & father commenced shearing Weathers they said there was 49 of them which they shore-got up ewes  altered the two Reppith buck lambs in the evening-

            After starting them to sheer I went to S. McGrews sale  took dinner with P. Overholts then went to Leesvill to borrow money to help make Edwards payment which I got of R.H. Smith $300.00 three hundred dollars  got home before supper trough Bowerston  rode george horse-  Edward gave his mother $116.00

 

June 7 1872 Friday

            Charley & Michal began Shearing about 9 oclock  the morning  being wettish-  Edward went to J. Lions to pay J. Deming the cash payment on his property  as soon as he got his chore done up after breakfast  $500.00  whin he got back set in to shearing  I tied wool and got very tired  Lisle & Emme come up on R.R. from Leesville and was here all night_  I bought Michals horse IKE on condition of easey cured and does well  I pay him $150.00 if not I give him $130.00 and run all risks,  handed him in the barn at dusk $75.00 and to take him away in the course of 2 or 3 days when I get readey

            Robert here to see about the the stove  went with Edward to Overholts for the sheep and when pend Mike & Charley shore with assistance of Ed  shere seven 7  they saying there was some 55

 

June 8 1872 Saturday

            Charley Michal & Edward at shearing the Overholt sheep I set in to tying wool and tied on till done 11 oclock when old Daniel come & relieved me stayed on untill we finished and worked like heroes till done which was late

            J.J. Smith wife & family come before diner on visit and in the eve before supper  bro Williams Sam & Julia come after Emma

 

 

June 9 1872 Sunday

            Mary & I went to Hagerstown to church in top bugy G & F horses

            The brindle cow buld by our own bull  Ed & bro Wm  Sam Brought him up -  Theadore and wife here in eve-  Sam & two sisters started for home also Theadore leaving us allone

 

June 10 1872 Monday

            Charley on hand early this morning  milked  fixed corn  I went to J. Holmes to see if I could get some cabage plants, I then went to Fierbaugh for horse and paid Michal $3.00 for shearing , besides sent Charley down to help shear about 10 oclock and shore all day

            After dinner Mary and I went to Bowerston to see about churn & clock  when I come back went to feed sheep & cattle  Adams heffer cow frolecking & bulled_

            Ed brought up slop and working down at home & haul some with colts

 

June 11 1872 Tuesday

            Charley sheering all day at Fierbaughs  I put Ewes & lambs over next J. Lyons after mending horse yoke-

            Theadore come up after Adams cow and took her away after dinner  I fixing J.J. Smiths bugey neck yoke  mending bridal etc Edward white washing rails around house & garden etc

 

June 12 1872 Wednesday

            Charley went back to Fierbaughs to help finish sheering.  didnt get back till middle afternoon or later

            Edward hauling wood for Wm Johnson & Crawford forenoon-  I went to Leesville & back by Bowerston (driving mules) before diner turned out wet afternoon  I went to mending breast strap after supper  Charley & I went to clean up granary but got verry little done

            I bought 50 cents worth of fish and gave mother 25 cts to pay black woman for washing to day

            Reed of Crawford on 17th inst one dollar for wood hauled by Ed as above- He said he hauled two loads to Johnston

 

June 13 1872 Thursday

            Charley & I went to sive grist wheat  Edward helped & cleaned up and red (?) up grainery and took grist wheat '40 bus to mill before diner

            After dinner Charley Ed & I went to Cultivate corn till supper- we heard George Englishes wife died this morning at 4 oclock

 

June 14 1872 Friday

            Charley on hand helping do up chors  oiling carriage and help Edward harnesf horse for Mary and I to go to G. English wifes funeral, after we had gone went with Edward to help him down at his house-  After coming from berrying I went to Leesville for 8 paper flour sacks churn & Clock did not get back till after night  paid in Bowerston on my way home 25cts to M. Allbaugh for J. Miller which I promised him for helping me drive home yearling I bought at his fathers sale

 

June 15 1872 Saturday

            Charley complained of head acke  milked cows after breakfast put 3 drums corn to soak & carrried in some two to shell, while I went down to town with 8 paper sacks to I. Masters and pay H. Tompson on cookstove 71/100 cts  Ed starting clock and Charley went home

            I wrote a letter to S. Hedges in Wheeling  shelled corn after dinner  moved wool up  84 fleeces of (mure)?  & 56 in Eds lot  in all 140  I went over creek to salt stock  Ed to salt his sheep, I gave him $20.00 to pay old man Overholt for pasture

 

June 16 1872 Sunday

            At home all day  Mary and I dined at Edwards  after diner he hitch up to carriage and went up to Gundeys  I went over the creek and brought up cows then after my own-  no company here today-  Mary and I spent an hour after night at Crawfords

 

June 17 1872 Monday

            Charley on hand frist thing  he & Ed working potatoes while I went to get the handles of cultavator lowered  after we went to working corn the remainder of the day

            Robert brought up his prince horse and lif him over the creek with colts

            After supper I went over to Deersville didnt get there till after 9 oclock

 

June 18 1872 Tuesday

            Charley on hand  work corn to day  when I come home from Deersvile was driving the cultavator  his brother george howing with Edward

            I lodged & breakfast with Simonton  after recd check of T.McIlroy on First National Bank of Wheeling cauling for $36.00 Thirty six dollars pay to Rachal Green date June 11 72

            Recd of F.J. Simonton from his wife $200.00 two hundred dollars which I recepted to them for

            After coming home I took 8 sack flower to Leesville to Robert and told him to only keep account of 7 as one was for Theadore  paid him $100.00 on the $300.00 I borrowed of him  suped with him and come home

           

June 19 1872 Wednesday

            Charley on hand he and I went out to work corn after breakfast      Edward went to Leesville to deal some with his wife and and bring home some cole

            After dinner Charley went out to work corn by himself I fixed up and started for Cadiz stayed with S. Adams  Edward got sick in Leesville and Joseph had to drive his team home late in eve he drove up Joseph bugey with Ledey and stayed all night

 

June 20 1872 Thursday

            Left S. Adams for Cadiz paid taxes to ampt of $67.10 by check on First National Bank Cadiz-  also drew $500.00 with a view of buying wool

            Charley on hand  he and Ed working corn after doing up chors  I went to Leesville to get bay horse shod before which Baker done price 25 cts which I paid Robt for besides paying for vinagar  I gave $200.00 to Robert which I borrowed of him some time ago on 6th Jan(?) and one on 18th inst to close up the $300.00 I got

            Charley on hand  after chruning went to cultavate corn  Edward mowing around the house

            I preparing stuf to doctor wart on bay horse, after Ed & I haul up load straw from sheephouse for beding after I was feed salting sheep & cattle

            Charley on hand  after breakfast when churn was done went out to cultavate corn  I writing letters to Haverfield & Howard of Cadiz-  After Mary & I went to Leesville in exprefs with Ike  I paid out to Robert $2.75 bal on sundrys-  Ed makeing cicken house all day while we were away

 

June 25 1872 Tuesday

            Charley on hand  culav corn all day after doing up chors and putting corn in crib and some to soak  I wrote letter to J. Roland of Caerville about Morgan Raid-  After dinner Ed went to fix ox yoke and stayed most of afternoon at Fierbaughs fixing (pim)? pump-  I got 2 letters from Cadiz in answer to Howard and Haverfield

           

June 26 1872 Wednesday

            Charley on hand  finished cultavating corn and plow and howed potato patch  the bees swarmed and had two fine swarms-  In afternoon marking ewes and puting 2 bucks over inn-

            I. Masters helped to hive the bees  At night took some honey

 

June 27 1872 Thursday

            Charley on hand  after breakfast Ed and he went to haul saw log had luck all day at one large oak log and had to get Fierbaughs to help load and pull out with with their team, after took it to Bowerstown

 

June 28 1872 Friday

            Charley on hand hauled two (lin)? loggs and the bords of yesterday logg back makeing {blank space}  in forenoon- Robert come after team and wagon took Carry home  Ed & Charley made another load in after noon three small (line)? or maybe (live)? loggs

            Charley on hand  Ed and he started to Bowerston with two (lin)? loggs and it was so warm they did not get back till 1 oclock- after dinner Charley got Prince horse and went to Deersville  Ed to salt his sheep_  I went to Leesville for vinagar& suspenders brought home Lide Clide & Dorey

 

June 30 1872 Sunday

            At home all day  in eve went to M.E. Church to hear Rev. Sweeney preach  after milking ect ect  I went out to get George Long to work a day or two

 

July 1 1872 Monday

            At home all day  I hauling wood in forenoon  Edward mending horse rake  when done went to mowing in clover  after dinner, I put corn to soak & after corned sheep & mealed cattle with Clide riding with me  after supper when milking over I went over to see old man Bear about his son John

            Charley at home all day complained of being sick

 

July 2 1872 Tuesday

            Charley on hand  milked after breakfast  churned & then to plow in the corn  Edward to finish mowing in clover field_

            George Long come on to work at barn  puld down some stone and dug away some clay, said he must have two dollars pr day I told him I could not afford to pay it so he quit_  Charley plowed on in corn till super then went to help Ed to cock hay_

            Ed & I was rakeing with Ike from dinner till supper and it was so warm we could hardly stand it

            Overholts daughter died this eve about 4 oclock P.M.

           

July 3 1872 Wednesday

            Charley on hand  after breakfast went to plow in corn

            Ed & I hauled in load hay before dinner, after dinner Ed went to funeral, I fixed up & rode Roberts mare to Leesville brought home team with 15 bus cole which I paid Theadore for 105 cts also paid for fish & things Mary ordered  some 50 cts

            Charley went to burying & I dont know how much time he lost but left gate open & the hoggs distroyed clutch chickens, it threatened rain and rained some

 

July 4 1872 Thursday

            Charley on hand  plowing in corn & finished it_  Edward mowing in orchard & triming some around the trees forenoon  After dinner rained & shower I went to (red)? up sheaf oats and to the P.O. and Laws to talk about horse rake ect ect  Recd some mail & letter from J. Roland  gave Mary 50 cts to pay Linders wife for washing

           

July 5 1872 Friday

            Charley on hand  (taging)? around fence corners & apple trees forenoon while Edward mowed afternoon  cocking hay after  Ed raking

            Mary & I went to Leesville on Exprefs  I paid Joseph for Clock $5.60  churn $2.00  come home late trough Bowerston

 

July 6 1872 Saturday

            Charley on hand  helping haul in hay till 4 oclock when we all went to put cattle off of R.Road & repair fence

            This eve ended Charleys work makeing 26 1/4 work days in all gave his father $12.00

 

July 7 1872 Sunday

            At home all day  went to hear young Edward preach  after 3 oclock Theadore stoped  going home from his Mother in laws after night  I went over to old Baers to try to get his son but failed very dry & warm

 

July 8 1872 Monday

            Charley commenced another month at the rate of $13.00 per mo sent him to Fierbaughs to plow corn  Ed there mowing from 9 oclock till 4 P.M, Then come home and cut his own lot-  I at home all day took dry corn to mill then in medow laging & rakeing wrote to Simonton to send me two of the Wharton rakes  dry and warm

 

July 9 1872 Tuesday

            Charley on hand  at Fierbaugh plowing corn  Edward mowing in orchard  I recieved 2 hand rakes by Magor Law sent by F.J. Simonton_ Went after Fierbaughs horse rake after dinner and raked with Ike till I went after cows for Ed & my self and missed young cattle  was very late cocking hay

                       

July 10 1872 Wednesday

            Charley on hand  helping Ed haul in hay_  I after young cattle at J. Lyons  Rodgers along_ Michal Father & Andrew at wheat  L. Roby here to try sell a mowing machine to Mike  failed  Ed & Charley hauld in his hay after dinner  Theadore & Clide come up _  had a fine shower in evening and all got a wetting

            I made Charley a present of a pair suspenders

 

July 11 1872 Thursday

            Charley on hand  Berry Ox got his horn tore off first thing fixing it  after worked in garden a while  Michal & Andrew come on to cradle in wheat  finished land that was left yesterday then went to cut Phillips lot  McKee from Cadiz came here to try to sell Michal a mowing machine  failed  Theadore mowing with colts then he and Ed pulling wagon Lathers to gather then took load hay home after super to Leesville

            Charley on hand  after breakf went to plow corn plowed on till after noon when come up rain between 2 & 3 oclock when broke off for the day__

            Edward mowing in field back of stable got broke of too

            I howed corn for a while mend harnefs & collar & rained heavy in eve after seven oclock went with Michal to Leesville and he bought (Champeors)? of Robey  We did not get home untill 12 oclock

            Charley on hand  plow corn forenoon  after noon helping in hay and hauld 1 load in barn

            Edward fixing wagon lathers forenoon  I tinkering around and went to Fierbaugh to look for garden rake but did not find it

            At home all day  sultry and warn_  Went up to I. Heastons at night to get help to cradle in wheat Michal went to Ebon Lockerages to get help there to follow his Machine on Jack Mule  did not get back till late in night

 

July 15 1872 Monday

            Charley on hand  I sent him to Fierbaughs to rake up after the reaping Maching  Ebon & his boy there helping_J.W. Heaston & Homer come on & cradeled & raked till dinner in field back of stable  After dinner wet and brittle went over to Fierbaugh to see machine run

            Charley there all day helping Michal moved the Machine to our wheat field

 

July 16 1872 Tuesday

            William Johnson come on to fix corner under barn Michal father & Andrew come to reap with Machine but too wet so we turned in to help Johnson and hauled stone from bridge & down on hill side Johnson went out after supper from his stone work to set up some wheat and got broke off again with rain

            Charley not here to day on account of being sick so said

            Charley on hand  choring round & diging in garden forenoon after picking currents at Mikes afternoon in wheat & hay_ Wm Johnson at stone work at corner of barn

            I went to Leesville after Thead to go to Cadiz worked here from 1/2 after 2 oclock till night__

            Michal Father & Andrew fin cutting wheat with reaping Maching drove mules  Philip here abought an hour  Theadore & I fixing to go to Cadiz in morning  rain heavey at night

 

July 18 1872 Thursday

            Charley on hand  helping Wm. Johnson at barn forenoon  Edward prepared grist wheat for mill  after fixing wagon ladders  Wm Johnson fixed stone work at barn said to be only 1/2 day__

            Theadore & I went to Cadiz in top bugey with George & Frank to prove the Morgan raid claim but uselefs__  got our dinners at Lemmons fed at Howsey  rained tremendous before we got in & while there till 1 oclock  left Cadiz 1/2 after 2 oclock home 1/2 after six and rather fine eve.[4 hour trip approx 30 miles - 7.5 miles per hour]

            Wm Johnson pr  Sam got 1 bus corn or 4 1/2 bus ears 60 cts

            Charley on hand forenoon helping shell corn & take it to mill after noon hauling hay out of medow be stable and putting in barn

            Charley on hand  working in hay in front of barn  Ed mowed all day and done wrong  should have quit at noon and taken in what he cut_  but sent Charley to Fierbaughs for rake having him fool away his time

            Mary & I went to Leesville and Sarah went along_  Robert come up here to see me about wool but got home before I left_  Mailed a letter in to S. Hedges West Liberty Ohio Co West Va in Bowerston as I went to Leesville  paid postage 3 change to plunket for Straps * to Prin in Bowerston  bal on sugar 1 g it being ten cts iou

            Charley on hand  wet day moving & shelling corn  after dinner washed off bugey in creek then wed in garden & sowed turnip seeds Edward went to A. Shelts after he come back took home 3 piggs, I went to Mill for flower & bran left 75lb flour with Rogers makeing 100 lb with the 25 lb I ordered I. Masters to give him on last Saturday 20th inst

            Charley on hand  after break grub down on rock till hay dry anough  Ed fixing pump at Mik  I went to Leesville for Barrell salt $2.10 and paper Turnip seed 30cts  did not pay for them  home 1/2 after 2 oclock  went to haul hay  3 loads  too late to unload the last one

 

July 25 1872 Thursday

            Charley on hand  pick currants at Mikes after leveling hay in mows  haul in 1 load hay again dinner  to 1 lump tobackco  gave him 4 or 5 before this-  after dinner hauled in 2 loads  wheat damp and went to haul load hay with Edward who was mowing forenoon baks of Phil Jim Malaney here for dinner  Robert come up to show L. Bransons letter,  after supper I lent him $400.00 four hundred dollars then went up with him as far as I. Heastons gave him this money after we left the house for short time

            Charley on hand  forenoon after chors done up raking & putting up hay back of potato patch  after noon helping haul in wheat & rye_ Edward went to mow with machine for I. Heaston di did not get back till 4 oclock and then took my place to haul in  Butchered a sheep after got done hauling in grain

 

July 27 1872 Saturday

            Charley on hand  late  milked did not want to stay_  but Mary drove him in to churn after breakfast & some other arrand  when done went to haul in hay till dinner then quit gave him cash just before he eat 20cts

            At home all day  Theadore and family with Clide Lilly & Carry along  Missianary meeting in grove today  began yesterday afternoon Robert & Rachel come up late in evening  went out with me to salt stock  a very fine warm day

            Charley on hand  commenced oats with machine Michal drove mules his father about 10 oclock as I went to Allbaughs to get brown horse shod before cost 50cts  bought M. Allbaughs wool 12 (cleps)? at 60cts perlb did not know when he would deliver_ Sam Johnson help after noon  come up a shower about 1/2 after 4 oclock P M

            Charley on hand  working in oats at Overholts  Michal run maching  Sam Johnson binding  Isaac Heaston binding  Thead Ed & Charley & myself all day till night before shocked up

            Charley on hand  choring all fore noon in garden & cut weeds around  wettish forenoon though not rainy  Ben Heaston berried between 11 & 12 oclock after dinner all hands went to cut oats at Overholts  Michal reaped with mules  Charley binding  Sam Johnson 1/2 day  Theadore all day  I. Heaston come about 4 oclock  Andrew with Michal all after noon got done  loaded & took machine home

            Charley on hand  all day helping Sickle  Sam Johnson come about 1/2 after 9 oclock  dined with Edward who was mowing all forenoon back of Phillips  Sam went to help Mik after dinner 1/2 day

            Edward went to mow with mules after noon for Heaston  Sarah Sunoulore Robert & Mary come yesterday eve and stayed till this eve till about 4 oclock

August 2 1872 Friday

            Charley on hand  helping Mike cradle  Timoty with Sam Johnson before going at oats_  I went to Leesville forenoon  got 2 papers coffee and 1 large plug tobacco  Theadore come home with me

            Edward putting up hay all forenoon, we hauled in 3 loads after I come home  Theadore helping and is to take a load home with him in the morning nothing preventing_  Robert taking in considerable wool

 

August 3 1872 Saturday

            Charley on hand  helping Mike  Sam Johnson also helping Mike Theadore started after breakfast to Leesville with load hay  I rode his mare after him  dined with Robert and paid him one dollar for Wm. (Steve) Stene) for mending Machine  cut bar then come home bringing team & wagon_  Fell in with Hawk and sold sixty pick of the sheep_  Receaved $200.01 two hundred dollars  he staying over night sheep to be taken on tuesday next

            At home all day  dry & warm  forenoon out looking among stock counting sheep  meal cattle with salt  after noon went to hear Edmond preach to the Sabath School Childrs. etc etc

Heaston & his son John come after dinner & cradled to cut the bal of oats_  borrowed (crossed out: cln) Clend & Thompson scale to weigh Overholts wool  215 lb at 65 cts  gave bill showing it come to $139.75  Robert come up before he went to Cadiz to get drafts  one for $700.00  one for $300.00

            J.M. Holmes here to get petition signed to levey tax on township to build R. Road got George horse to ride all day till 10 oclock at night

 

August 6 1872 Tuesday

            Charley on hand  after churning went to help Mike  there all day  Edward after bringing sheep went to I. Heastons to mow with machine & mules_  Hawk come to get his sheep after dinner  picked out 61 and on the way got 25 more of Mike all at $4.50 pr head I helped him to Bowerston and he gave me no pay for it which was MEAN when I come home Edward haul oats for S. Johnson had select the sheep & put out ewes & lamb

 

August 7 1872 Wednesday

            Charley on hand  after breakfast went to help Mike in oats there all day  Edward went to mow with machine for I. Heaston there all day with mules_  I went Leesville in bugey  George & Frank there all day  Branson sacking wool  intend to leave next morning

            Robert drew $400.00 four hundred dollars of the two drafts I gave him on Monday morning

            Sam Johnson on hand all day  J.W. Heaston here all day  Homer till noon  then went for his father in afternoon  at oats here forenoon  haul in from Overholts  afternoon I was unwell  kept in the house after 10 oclock

            I gave order to Charley Rog store in Leesville for $7.00

            Sam Johnson on hand  forenoon part of the time here at the oats & part at Overholts oat  which they finished and quit at noon  I was at chores & helping a little in oats  setting some up after the shower

            I receaved 3 lb wool of M. Allbaugh son and paid for it $22.80

            Went to Leesburgh after doing up chores  home again 4 PM Joseph stoped on his way home from Deersville but went on again after supper looking like rain_  I went out to salt cattle & sheep did not get back till after night

            Isaac Heaston & Homer come to help in with bal of oats  it rained in after noon and detained but got all in

            Whit Greenwalt & Taylor come looking for work  Taylor come back and stayed all night

            Edward put bed on wagon  Taylor & Greenwalt helped him & Ed started for load cole  Call & Fred went along  after they started I.Heaston come and paid me twenty five dollar $25.00 on white steer I went to Bowerston to tell J. Overholts how to saw Lin loggs & on to Leesville  bought ham  told Joseph to charge  said it weighed 10 lb at 11 cts  met Greenwalt in Hagerstown and borrowed cash 75cts of Mr. Wallace to pay him_  come home by J. Lyons but did not see him at night paid Dan Fierbaugh the I.Holmes note $50.00 on 16th inst paid Robert for the ham  at dusk paid Wallace the 75 cts cash borrowed to fin paying Whit

            Urban Taylor set in to work this morning at the rate of 12.00 pr month  after chores done went to dig potatoes in garden  after dinner went to help Edward

            Met S. Johnson and went back with him  he riding Bobs Prince horse and gave order to Robert to let him have goods to ampt of $7.69 as pr bill late  when I got home plant some turnip seed or sowed them

            At home all day  Edward went to Deersville with His family in carriage  Theadore with his & Bobs family all come just before dinner and Robert himself come on his way to Cadiz and after dinner started on the bay horse  Theadore & Lile started home late leaving Rachel & family here

            Ban on hand  after breakfast went to get his pants made & then to churn  Sam Johnson to 1 bus corn in ears 60 cts_  After churning Ban & I went over to mow with Scythes & cut about 1/2 load hay & put it in sheep house same evening

 

August 21 1872 Wednesday

            Ban on hand  after breakfast went to cut load wood for G. Adams for making his pants and hauled it to him which is worth $1.00 one dollar_  After breakfast I mended carriage breast straps then fixed up and Mary & I went to Deersville and I receaved the bal of T. McIlroys last note for the 5 acre of land sold him agoining Deersville on 30 of April 1870  the note cauling for $83.33/100 (crossed out: but) bearing interest from date coming due on 30th April 1872 and had receaved a payment on it 18th June 1872 leaving ballance at this time $57.30/100  stayed at Simontons all night

 

August 22 1872 Thursday

            Ban on hand  whin we come home from Deersville he & Edward putting stone on stable floor to level it up which was a little after 1 oclock & Whit Greenwalt was with them, and soon after we had a hevey shower after which I went to lengthen Alecks back band---

            At night I gave Ban 5 cts to get something he wanted

            Michal was here to see about his wool & go to Leesville but it being wet & late we did not go

            Ed went to help I.Heaston trash & I sent Ban about 9 oclock Edward got sick come home & sent S.Johnson in his place & at Fierbaughs all after noon_  I went to Leesville 1/2 after 10 oclock for Mary & Lesle  bought groceries to amp of $2.20  paid cash on them  home before night and got 2 lb flower of I.Masters to come out of grist Edward took there last week

            Ban on hand  went to help Fierbaugh to trash  W.Linder & S.Johnson come up about 1/2 after 8 oclock & I sent them on to help, I was looking up hands before dinner to help after noon  Machine come on & commenced about 2 oclock  the hands Dan Michal & Andy with Jake horse, I.Heaston & J.I.Holmes, Ren Linder & Dell S.Johnson, Lin Taylor etc etc

            Ban on hand  after breakfast went to Mansfields to help trash_ I rode over to Mansfields forenoon  Edward & S.Johnson after Elder berries_  I salted the sheep but did not see the cattle _  Edward went to Leesville after dinner_  I mend bridal & greeased my boots & shoes  Ban come home about 4 oclock & done nothing but milk & rode down to the bottom to salt cattle & see the colts

 

September 1 1872 Sunday

            After Edward & Ban left for Darkey meeting  I went to Leesville  dined with Robert  come home about 4 oclock

            Ban did not get home till night from Darkey meeting with Bobs horse_  Theadore & wife come by late  Mary went to Leesville with them in the night  Ban & I slept here alone_  Robert handed me $50.00 fifty dollars, on his porch to give to Mike on his wool which I handed him on Monday morning

 

September 2 1872 Monday

            Ban on hand  & got breakfast for himself & I_ After breakfast Edward & Ban went to hauling rails acrofs oats stuble

            I went down & gave Michal the $50.00 fifty dollars Robert gave me yesterday_  And then come home & hitched to the carriage & went to Leesville to see Joseph off for Philadelphia & brong Mother home_

            After coming home I went out to stake off since saw Ban was only going trough the motion_  Michal called while I was down at Eds to leave J.D.Otis letter to be replied to which I done

            Ban on hand  he and Ed run string fence up by corn

            I went to Leesville with 6 bus wheat to steem mill got 2 No5 steel center plow sheers  paid for them in flower to Robert  he to credit to L.Robey $1.20_  got straps of J.Plum(vat)_ to ampt of 1 75

            Ban on hand  forenoon washing & grind axes & scythes  after noon Chip down at creek  Edward & I mowing weeds in drafts  brought home bull after supper _  had Fierbaugh washing machine

            Ban on hand  forenoon Wettish  after putting bord on bulls forehead  tinkering at yoke while I was mending bridal for Mike, after dinner Ban & I started to Leesville, but Ban stoped to help J.M.Holmes to trash also Edward I went on to Leesville and come home by Bowerston to see about Lin boards  met Mike there seeing about train for his Father & Mother to go to Defiance  I was home before night

 

September 6 1872 Friday

            Ban on hand  after breakfast started with oxen to haul manure from sheep house  Ed & I took home washing Machine  then Ed went to help Ban at manure  I was moving to clear away trash to start the plow  started it about midle of after noon and only made about two rows  I worked verry hard and got almost overheated

            Ban on hand  after breakfast went to hauling manure on wheat ground_  Edward & I went to plow_  In the evening Edward got Fierbaughs gray Mare & started the second plow & we got along fine only I got verry tired

            Edward plowing with Fierbaughs gray mare & Frank I with Mules_ after I looked at Mierals cattle_But was disapointed by young Berney & S.Bott not cauling according to promice, which curtailed my days plowing

            Ban on hand  at M.B.Fierbaughs plowing  only made 3/4th of day

            Reese Peoples on hand  finished harrowing about 10 oclock then haul stone & corn till dinner  I along

            Ed commenced Drilling wheat  Kept him all day & didnt get quite done_______________________

            Reese only 1/2 day & he & I went to Leesburgh by D.Wiants  I got him a pair fine boots of James Robey $7.00  I bought 1 Bus Lin seed of Robert which he got of B.Price 44 lb but lost 1 lb in weighing which I paid him for along with 3 lb Rice out of a five dol bill__ got of M.B.Fierbaugh forenoon 27 1/2 lb Lin seed grafs

            Ban & I went to Leesville  got him Hat & Coat etc as pr bill amounting to $8.20

            Theadore & wife Lede & children come with him  all dined at Edwards_  Ban & I was home before dinner & dined at home

            Rees on hand  harrowing around Edge of Wheat & haul stone stumps etc before dinner_  Ed fin drilling & took it to Mikes, also 4 lb Lin seed-  After dinner went to Cut up corn along with Reese, I went up to Hefses to meet W.Crimm but failed to meet him

            Lide here all day & at night  Clide was verry sick as also sunday night

            Rees on hand  cutting corn with Edward_  After breakfast when got readey Mary & I went to Leesville to take Lide home & childred Clide being very sick night before  come home trough Bowerston telling J.Overholts to call & get $10 or 12 dols worth of goods on my acpt

            Ban & oxen all day with Mike  at night Rees & I went up to S.Heastons to get beef but failed

            After breakfast Mary & I went in wagon to Mikes taking from station stove grate  I went to Isaac Heastons  got 36u fore quarter beef for self & 30 for Mike  after I went to Leesville for load cole with mules & to bring home old lounge from Roberts  did not get home till night & it rained

 

September 19 1872 Thursday

            Rees on hand  after getting a few aples& getting some bedding for horses went to cutting corn with Edward

            Ban on hand at Michals  I went over to see how getting along & brought back 19 lb Lin seed 19 1/2u lb grafs

            Old John Crawford here to see about some wood & gave a dollar for the load wood Ban brought him some time ago & some bricks said he got 24 I believe

 

September 20 1872 Friday

            Rees on hand  cutting corn with Edward_  I wrote & inclosed note to Wm Crimm of Perryville for wool & corn bot at D.Hefs sale heard of the Leesburgh cows being down at station, after dinner took them to Leesville  bought 1/2 bus timseed and app pairer paid J.Johnson for them $2.60 seed 1 62 pairer & snap 1.00

            Ban at Fierbaugh  cut corn and did not make over 3/4 day then did not do as bid or cut where told, shabed off to get his boots mended_

            I got Rode recept from D.Heaston cauling for $6.44

Greens & stayed there till eve when we left Joe S. Greens where we supped & stayed all night

            Rees on hand & when I come home from visit was makeing cider_ breakfast with S. Green after taking a look at his oats  James Nursary  Bee apery and machinery etc etc we lif for Deersville where we dined with bro F.T. Simonton, and sister Sarah gave me cash (on young cattle sold them last spring $30.00 which I recepted for there started for home.

            Rees on hand  after chores fixing to haul wood  J.Overholts son & H.Weymer come here for some money & I gave him $240.00 Two hundred & forty dollars which paid his wool out and one hundred to be placed on my notes on which ever he sees proper_  after they left I went to Leesville to see Joseph but too late to talk much with him as he was starting east again  Edward & Rees diging potatoes all the after noon_  as I come home I gave order to young Joe Overholts for (sammy)? to amount of $12.00 twelve dollars

 

October 2 1872 Wednesday

            Rees on hand  Edward and he finished diging potatoes forenoon when it turned in wettish_  And then Rees and I grind axes drawing knives etc then went to get a maul stick

            Rees on hand  he & I haul 3 loads corn forenoon_  after dinner we went to Bowerstown for load lin bords  did not get home till late Edward got home in good time but sick with head ake

            Rees on hand  helping gather aples to take G.Long 4 bushels to get rid of him which I did owe him  help fill up 3 bus wheat to take to steam mill which I took to Leesburgh

            Then went to pick apples but before that brought load boards from below school house_  Edward then went at some other work for himself  I did not get home till night  got sugar & cheese to ampt of 1.50

            Rees on hand  after churning helped to load wagon with lin boards to take to W.Moor in Leesville as I was going for grist_  Then put (lantern)? on low wagon to haul straw from under barn to Wm.Johnson where I understood he and Ban done

            Then took H.Boors log chain to Bowerston_  Ed & I (red)? up bull this morning in stable 

            Delivered to Wm.Moor on Robert account 490 feet 1/2in lin bords at 175 for him = $8.57 and 190 feet inferior at 1.25  237 in all 1994 got of robert 14 bus cole & 10 lb Beef ampt to 190

            At home all day  Rees rode prince horse to (gindey)? meeting Edward went with mules to big wagon  Theadore & wife come about the midle of the day,  I read H.Wilsons political speech

            Rees on hand  went to pick app but got wet  I hunting up shov to I.Heastons and rees done little or nothing_  After dinner Mike & I went to look at J.Heaston cattle_  I bought two calves of J.Heaston for $16.00 sixteen dollars  paid him $5.00 on them in prssence of J.Tolle  at night went to Bowerston to order cure for cattle

 

October 8 1872 Tuesday

            Rees on hand  forenoon sawing wood  J.Wiant for Eds claords after breakfast Mike & I went to New Market to Election_  Then I to Bowerston  Mike to J. Heastons  bought 4 cattle of him_  After dinner we took our cattle to Bowerston  Rees helped but missed Carry then drove out to J.Overholts field & we then come home late_

            I Supped with Rev Bowers this eve he said he would come up in morning for prince colt

            Rees on hand_  after breakfast took out load pumkins & shock corn to J. Overholts field with mules  went to Bowerston for cart stuffs to make bed_ then Mike & I went to Leesville  got dinner  back to Bowerston  Carr on hand  come right home for cattle & hoggs all hands gathering up hoggs to Carr  Mike & I got our super at Wm. Pims  cost 50 cents started with stock about 9 oclock arived in Pittsburgh about 9 oc & E.Liberty about 10 oclock next morning

            Rev Bowers come up to day and got Prince

            Rees on hand  haul stone  make sider & haul wood for Edward with oxen & bay horse

            I at bro Williams  got two hand saws sharped & (jude)>, saw clamp for sharping  in after dinner  come to Deersville  Recd of F.T. Simonton draft on Fourth National Bank New York for $299.25/100 & cash .75 = $300.00 Recpt for as also entered on note Recd 3 piggs coming to $5.50 also recpt for separate from draft_  Also cash on a (flan)? bill of Roberts amounting to $6 which I recpted on bill fro

            S.Hedges here whin come home left piggs in box on wagon all night

 

October 24 1872 Thursday

            Rees on hand  forenoon fixing hogpen & tinkering round with Hedges and horses training_  After dinner went to husk corn & Hedges & I went to Leesville_  Left Robert draft for $299.25 & receaved a recpt for_  I got one dollars worth of beef of him & come home after supper_  S.Hedges lifted his note bal of boot money on the Bet Mare which was $25.00

            Rees on hand  went to husk corn till Mary cauld him off to help at meeting house fence where he put in bal of day  I went up to Hefs girls to buy their poultry  home again dinner  brought Hedges back to diner before starting to Cadiz  rather wettish day  I was choring all the afternoon

            Rees on hand  after breakfast went to Overholts for load old straw for beding then fixed wagon and after dinner went to Hesses for poultry were not (carct)? & come home without wagon  gathered a few apples and went back after supper got 16 geese 8 turkeys & 27 chickens did not get back till 11 oclock

            Rees on hand  after breakfast helped grees bugy and harnefs & hitch horses to go to Leesville with Mother & Sarah then went to chop wood  unload beding straw etc etc_

            I bough Tin bucket cast steel soap which I paid Robert for the bucket I got of Thompson _ got 12 lbs beef charged to me said by J.Johnson to be worth $1.00  I.Holmes here at night looking for wry straw & to get a hand to husk corn_  got the $20.00 dol bill changed in Leesville & Mother got $5.00 of paid Robert $1.25 for tin bucket & cast steel soap

            Rees on hand  first after breakfast hauld up barrel milk slop from Eds then went to the cornfield for few pumkins  after trashed a floor of wry then dinner after which went to G.Hefses for load pumkins cost 75 cts in cash hauled with oxen

 

November 1 1872 Friday

            Rees on hand  after breakfast went to Eds for Mules to go for load pumkins for Ed but had to help Ed haul stones & sleeper after first before dinner Rees & I hauled load wood after dinner Wes went with Mules for load pumkins after starting Rees out of the field I went up to Mrs Hefses and gave her the fifty cent bills for the two loads pumpkins equal $1.50/100  I was riding George  Rees stayed with Ed to help do some lifting after unloading from load pumkins

            Rees on hand  first after breakfast went down to pull log out of creek then brought up load wood for him to chop it  I went to Mikes for a peice of beef stake say 18 or 20 lbs  Ed took Rees to help him get saw loggs to take to Bowerston did not get back untill after night  I was picking apples _ rained some in eve

            At home all day  quarterley meeting  Elder Williams preach fore & after noon  Mike & sarah dined with us  a drisley day

            Rees on hand  husking corn forenoon with Edward  afternoon grees wagon & hauld in load  Ed went to Bowerston for boards missed getting them

            Rees rode George up to Hefs to spark & pay two dollars, to the girls  bal I owed them on poultry  gave him the two dollars all but five cts $1.95

            Rees on hand  after breakfast went to help I.Holmes to husk corn  rained  quit  I.Holmes at noon_  I went to New Market to Election  Isaac Masters along__

            Rees on hand  he & Ed haul bal of corn_and then was about to go to McMillin sale did not go but set in to haul fodder_  bro William's wife & daughter here till after dinner when son Frank come for them_  I went to Leesville for load cole with mules  brought home 20 bushels got of J.Price  did not pay for it to Robert but told him to credit J.Price for it $1.40/100

            At home all day & did not clean up  Joseph come on his way to Smyrne & got Bay horse Clide along with him_  Next come Robert with his & Theadores family_  S.Hedges took George horse & went to Deersville back in eve_  Rees went home with Robert on Frank & led mare Jos brought up to get something in store buck mitts or gloves cost $3.00 got & kept

            Rees on hand  he & Ed husking corn all day  haul'd in second load after night when it began to rain  rim wagon in wagon house load & all_  S.Hedges here all day  I put handle in hatchet & got James to make 2 hook nails to fastin back plate of fierplace paid for 5 cts

            Rees on hand  stormy morning rainey & snowey  helped bring sheep over creek after trashing & fixing under barn til night_

            S.Hedges left after breakfast  he said for Wheeling_  Joseph returned from Smyrne Just after dinner  he fed & refreshed & went on to Leesville

            Put up Buck & Berry & colts for first under barn_  Rees at Edward paring apples to make butter after coming from Overholts with kettle

 

November 13 1872 Wednesday

            Rees on hand  he & Ed husking corn all day and haul in one load after supper after I come home from Leesburgh__

            I went to Leesburgh on frank horse met Robert on his way starting to Pittsburgh  Mifs M.Cullough along on the wagon going home  I dined with J.J. in evening brought home bay horse  I got a cut of Thread & some needles_  A fine day day but rained a little at night While rees & I gathered up the corn hauled with Buck & Berry had to drive out in big field covered up load with bords

 

November 14 1872 Thursday

            Rees on hand  forenoon unloading wagons of corn in each crib & shelling some corn-

            Ed & Cale went to Leesville on Expresfs with Mules_

            I went to Bowerston to see Rev Bowers about the prince horse took him back  gave me $5.00 to do so_  Rees husk corn while I was gone  cold & raw whin I come home, Ed back, it was near night_

            I gave Mike the $5.00 dollars I got of Bowers on a church Subscription I  made the time U.N. Brother Conference was held here. so there it ended

            Michal up here trying to settle over Pittsburgh cattle affair till after 11 oclock did not get it done

 

November 15 1872 Friday

            Rees on hand  a cold day  helping Ed to put away & berry apples forenoon  after noon he and Ed hauld 2 loads wood with Buck & Berry  I was fixing the floor of hog pen & tinkering around  put up 4 piggs after night  Ed & Rees shelled some corn  Mike & I settled up on cattle matter  I gave him $40.00 dollars & yet owes him $2.85

 

November 16 1872 Saturday

            Rees on hand  choring around till Mike come to help select the sheep then with us to help Mike take muley Buck_  Ed & I put horney Buck with our 55 ewes  after that we hauld in what corn Rees husked on Thursday after noon which Kept us till night  after supper Rees & I shelled corn and fed horses & cattle at stable & barn, still verry cold.

            We counted 121 sheep all togeather  58 ewes  three of which I gave to Ed  a run down wether & a young lamb  in all 5_  there was 42 lambs & 5 over there put over towards school house

            Theadore & wife come up to Mike on visit as I was informed

            Rather a cold day for the season_  Rees & I went to Leesville after getting chores done up, he getting over coat amounting to $14.00  we dined with Robert  rode prince horse & Alick

            Rees on hand  forenoon cutting wood_  Rin Linder trashing Rye 1/2 day_

            Edward & I fixing calf house when done cleaned up rye_  After night I went to Mikes & I.Heastons to get them help butcher

            Rees on hand  a cold day  I.Heaston & Mikel helped butcher bull & china hogg  Mike left after hanging bull_  I. Heaston stay to help butcher china hogg Kept till nearly night  bulls hide weighed 109 lb  sold to Clindening & Thompson at 7 cts pr lb  come to $7.63/100

 

November 20 1872 Wednesday

            Rees on hand  joined oxen with I. Heaston to go to Leesville for load cole  took Robert 3 quarters of the beef hind quarters weighed 300 lb  the one fore quarter 182  the other we kept  suposed the whole carkafs to be 657 lbs  Rees & Heaston brought back some 30 bushels cole did not get home till 9 oclock

            James Overholt took his calf home after dinner  I went out to feed ewes and the buck butted me over and hurt my knee badley_  We tied up (young)? cattle this eve and put up blak & white steer to feed  the weather still cold and dry making a hard freese

            Rees on hand  snowey morning  he and Ed first hauled in the corn they husked yesterday_

            Then hauled some wood and went to mill for bag corn meal  I was over at Mikes to pay him the bal on Pittsburgh trip  gave him $3.00 three dollars  the ballance of the time feeding  Old Joseph Overholt come here to borrow Buck sheep  Bet Long here washing  I clean myself up to give my dirty clothes to be washed

            Rees sick with pain in his back  very cold & ruffe

            James Overholts come after the buck sheep and promise to bring him back on Saturday at outside, the old man only wanting him two days  Bet Long here still mending old clothes for Rees & my self

            Rees still sick after I got the feeding done & an early dinner I got the mules and went to Leesburgh on exprefs  got pat bucket saltpeter & grain pepper  paid Joseph for them  come home late intending to go back next day, but it turned up so cold I did not go_  I think young Ed Moor_Dode Stevenson & some other boy brought up 30 geese_  but not shure this is the day or 30 the number

            Rees still complaining of his back  very cold & blustery helped Ed to saw some wood  I busy feeding & fixing stock all day went out late in eve to feed ewes and almost froze  found them down at the pasture gate and fed them there_

            Rees better  extremely cold  helped me feed sheep out-in big field and haul up some oat straw from barn  Edward trying to fix pump at barn but got sick and had to give it up_  Rees & I had to go down to run to break ice to get water for stock  I never saw the run so low since I been on the place

            A snowey day  I at home all day  busy feeding  had to take the horses to the creek to water  Rees along  when we got back he went down to cut ice on run for cattle  Joseph come up on Fan mare to see su and tell about his offer to trade property  Mary away at Sarah and we got dinner selves

            Rees went to Brothern Church after dinner & I done the most of the feeding before he got back

            Rees on hand  feeding forenoon  he and Ed hauling down load straw to his house & fodder to sheep house & barn_  Jim Overholts brought home buck sheep_  I took pig to L.Robeys bore & brought back barrel salt & peice rope for halter  windy rough & cold night  I paid Bob for salt  $2.00 bill

 

December 3 1872 Tuesday

            Rees on hand  took 1 1/2 bus wheat to Mill then he and Ed haul wood bal of day_  Mary & I went to Leesvill by Mikes & took Sar along  got Mules shod behind  I got J.Robey to 1/2 sole my big shoes a ball shoe thread & piece sole leather to fix pump $1.00  told Joseph to settle it & charge to me,  I ordered Iron wedge of Steve for 60 cts & told him Edward would pay for the shoeing of mules supposed it would be $2.25 for 4 new shoes & 4 removes sharped & toed_  Mary bought some over $6.00 worth of goods which I paid for next day to Joseph with J.Robeys bill & cole

 

December 4 1872 Wednesday

            Rees on hand  fore noon helping Ed to haul wood  took load to A.Trusal_  Afternoon helping Mike haul wood with oxen to his father & himself till night_  I went to Smiths cole bank for load cole with mules  hauld 20 bushels cost $1.20  told Smith to charge to Robert_ I paid Joseph for it and what goods Mary bought yesterday including $1.00 I owed James Robey  all makeing some $8.00 less .15 cts if counted right_

 

December 5 1872 Thursday

            Rees on hand  forenoon feeding & chruning & doing up chores for Mary_  Mike come about 10 oclock to chop ground axes sharped croscut saw & put in ballance of day below barn in corner of medow at two big trees Smilley cut down last spring_  Edward went to Leesville & Smith bank for load cole_  I gave him $5.00 bill to purchase grate for Franklin stove  was home in time to help me in with cattle at barn

            Theadore with Clark & Moors boys  brought up some poultry  they said 10 geese  16 turkeys  & 40 chickens  after unloading started back before I got the letter Robert sent up by Edward to give my opinion about the wool that C.Hoagg sent him from Cadiz

            Rees on hand  went with oxen to help Mike to haul foder & load wood last in eve to himself_     

            I Went to Leesburgh on Exprefs with mules to advise Robert about the wool  come home trough Bowerston * borrowed scales of J.Overholt (JW)?_  Ed fixing up Franklin stove for himself  done in time to help me put cattle in when I come home from Leesville

            Rees on hand  helping Mike with oxen & cart to fill under barn to put his cattl up_  Ed & I first mending gate at corner of hog pen, then haul load straw from barn to stable, after three shocks fodder out of corn field to stable then he took home wood from below barn to his house_  after supper Rees & I shelled 1 1/2 bus corn for poultry then Rees went to town (Written below in pencil: 7 sow served)

            Rather a fine day  J.M. Holmes come over before breakfast  want me to go to Leesville with him  declined going on expecting some of the boys her from Leesville but none come  Mike & Sarah here to dine also Ed & Call  G.W.Adams here a while after dinner_  I at home all day  not off of the place  Reese Rode Jack Mule up to Gundey meeing house in after noon which threw the wait of feeding on me

            Rees on hand  extreme cold after feeding he & Ed took mules to Mikes expecting to get stove but failed & Rees spent bal of day haul wood for Mike & Dan till night  cold as it was_

            Rees on hand  Edward went to Leesville on exprefs for stove & get at butchering poultry  did not get back till night on Bobs Esprefs wagon with Joseph Old cook stove Boxes barrels & six yellow turkeys

            Rees took oxen & hauled load wood for Old J.Crawford first after feeding worth 50 cts  after he come back he & I fix under barn to keep piggs out of cattle stantials  Mary went over to Mikes & left us to peace till supper.

            Rees on hand  he & Ed preparing to butcher poultry fixing up stove in wash house  took oxen to haul barrel water & then 1 load wood out of upper bottem old elm

            Ren Linder By 3/4 day choping 75  Mike helped some half day choping with Ren in run bottom above their medow_  Joseph & Clide come about 11 oclock_  F.J. Simonton at dinner time on his way to Steubenville.  Herrit Trusal & Ames Masters helping pick poultry 1/2 day as also Call

            Rees on hand  helping with poultry  Ed Cal,A.Masters & Hen Trusal _  quit about 2 oclock  after noon_ F.J. Simonton here for dinner on his return from Steubenville, Greenberry Hedges also here for dinner _  he & Simonton went away together after dinner_  After all left Rees & I at chores & shelling corn

            Rees on hand  when he got up went to help Mike butcher 5 Hoggs and not back at 10 oclock to night  Edward haul wood with oxen help feed etc_  I went to Leesville after sow  paid to L. Robey who said she was served on last saturday 7th  said to go 16 weeks which would bring her in about about the 7th April 73_  I brought home 8 geese 3 turkeys & 2 pullits on his Espefs wagon

 

December 14 1872 Saturday

            Rees on hand  after feed & churning hauld 1 load wood out of botom below Mikes, While I went to Leesville for bran and onley cut a little wood  did not as much as clean out stantials at barn on calf house and nearly let the fire out in house_  I did not pay Robert for bran not Knowing how much was of it got sugar coffee tea & rice  ordered him to pay Wm. Stine for shoeing mules and and iron wedge all coming to $3.20 4 new shoes $1.80 and 4 removes 80 cts & Iron wedge 60 = 3.20

            I got 13 baggs bean (which J.J. weighed on Tuesday 17th (inse)? when he was up killing poultry 1632

            Rained a little shower in the morning  cleared up again noon at home all day  not strange body here_  Ed took the carriage and went up to Gundeys_  Mary & Rees went to Brethern Church in afternoon_  I at home all day feeding most of it

            Reese on hand  after chores done commenced to kill the geese the hand A. Masters_  Hen Trusall Ed & Call  Theadore come on my Exrefs wagon with bay & rone mares  went home at night_  I went to Fierbaughs after dinner to borrow their sledge  while there Bill Vermillian come to sell or trade his mare  examined prince said he liked him and would be up tomarrow & show me his mare_  Bob went to Carrollton & Joseph had to stay in store_  Ed said they killed 21 geese

 

December 17 1872 Tuesday

            Reese on hand  at geese again  hands to day A. Masters, H. Trusel Ed & Call Joseph_  Theadore & J. West come on their Exprefs wagon here  said they killed 40 geese & Ed 2 turkeys  after night when all had went home_Joseph weighed the 13 baggs bran netted 632 lbs_

            Bill Vermillion traded his Fill mare for Robert H. Smith prince horse with me by my giving him cash to boot $15.00 and paid of horse shoes to drive on  aid he was satisfied  when he traded he traded to stay traded  in presence of M.B. Fierbaugh and I said the same that when I traded I never went back if I lost the beast or horse so we parted wishing each other good luck & Joseph & Theadore took the mare to Leesburgh with them

 

December 18 Wednesday

            Rees on hand  after breakfast choping  Edward & I took the poultry to the station with oxen on sled  3 boxes & 2 lbs, when he come back he & Rees went to haul oat straw from barn to stabel and his stable_  After dinner I went to Leesville on Roberts fan mare to tell him I intended going to Cadiz next day or part of the way, and to give the weight of thes two turkeys Ed dressed night before  after all left  30 lbs  I left the bay mare & brought back the sorrell I traded for day before it was night when I got back & Reese was down at Eds

 

December 19 1872 Thursday

            Edward & Rees went to Leesville after breakfast for Reese to get goods to make coat & pant with mules on little jumper of Theadores_  I by to fix to start to Cadiz  first went to Fierbaughs to get their road recp  Mike brought them up_  I started after 2 oclock & got to S. Adams stayed with him all night  rode the new mare she done well

 

December 20 1872 Friday

            After breakfast left S.Adams for Cadiz arived there 8+1/2 oclock  put up with Atkinson  went & pd tax $39.89 mine  & Eds, his $2.11/10 (pare)?

            Fierbaughs $35.47  gave check on First National Bank Cadiz for $75.36 then went & gave Mr. Beeber the cash against it in bank_

            Reese done little or nothing to day  took his coat to Bet Longs to be made_  did not help clean out cattles place at barn pretended to clean out the hog pen left the door open and left the colts out, and the stable in bad order which I had to turn to and bed & fix after I come home

            Ed was out buying turkeys the afternoon so he said on Jack mule & I suppose Reese rode Allick to Longs_  It was is dangerously icey on the rodes

 

December 21 1872 Saturday

            Reese on hand  churning after breakfast before the feeding was done  Ed finished feed shut. then they went to haul wood  2 loads for Ed & 1 for me_  I buisey all day reding up & cleaning out stables & feeding  after reese & Ed got done haul wood he cut some for fire place fed cattle at barn sheld 1 1/2 bus corn & them put out to spark up to Longs or some Where else

            Ed took ear ake & went home sick_  It still remains cold & icey so much so I have to carry water to horse in stable and kept so buisey I could not get time to take Mike his tax recepts & change

            Reese could not wait to milk cow for fear of breaking his appointment & she went unmilked

            At home all day  buisey feeding  severeley cold & frosty  Theadore come up to Edwards on his way to Engl whare his wife was & stayed all night there leaving his mare & sley at Edwards_  Reese runing around to Brethern church Mikes and in eve to prayer meeting & of verry little account to help me feed this day

 

December 23 1872 Monday

            Reese on hand  helping feed & chop wood & seemes verry trifiling  I cant learn him to do right about feeding_  Theadore & Lisle returned from Englishes on their way home did not waite for dinner but put out for home driving Joseph mare to Watts sley_  Still extreme cold  Edward still verry sick with ear ake_  I went down to store to try to buy G.English wooll but failed

 

December 24 1872 Tuesday

            Reese on hand  helping feed  after I got trough I went over to Mikes he was gone to Bowerston to get his horses shod & to Leesburgh I came back by old mans who was watering his horses_  I then went down to town to get some lamp oil & mail a letter for Mike which Sarah gave me that he forgot_  I left his tax recpts with Sarah & the $40.00 he gave me to pay his tax which was $35.50 cts which I intend-Robe to charge him with on his wooll & credit me with_  I gave Edward cash $5.00 to pay Browers on his work  Edward is still sick_

            I met Mansfield at store and had a talk with him  he was trying to buy W & B Laws wool  he said he offered 60 cts but they was not willing to make as much (resterchon)? as he wanted_  Rees went down to Mikes after his pants and borried his gun for Christmas the Mules he brought up and haul 1 load wood in eve before he took them home

 

December 25 1872 Wednesday

            At home all day feeding & buisey  Old man Overholts & wife visiting at Edwards_  Mike & Sarah went to Ebon Lockrages to spend their Crstmas_  Reese went a shooting after helping do some of the feeding and was rather poor help to day not worth his bording

            Burt Moore was here to see about making some ties and we went all round the place looking at the timber  it is still extremley cold & frostery dry_  The pump gave out with Rees pumping in evening_

 

December 26 1872 Thursday

            Reese on hand  helping feed all day_  There fell quite a heavey snow  we fixed barn for sheep

            Theadore & two town boys come up with some turkeys to Edwards was here for dinner  I went to try fix pump after dinner but failed

            At night Call took a bleeding at lungs as I was coming from feeding sheep  when I went in they were all most sceared to death sent fror Doc M.Gavern  I come for Mary  when we got down there was A. Masters Mrs Wittel & Dock  after getting reconciled Rees went up to Longs after his coat on alick after watering & feeding mules Reese & I come home & left Mary there trough quite a deep Snow

 

December 27 Friday

I at home all day  buisey feeding after morning work  Reese took sorrel mare went to Leesville with his coat & pants to get changed left his pants  brought back coat to be altered but not decided on_

            Robert come up with Rach & children had load on sled for Pettes & Clark  unloaded went back same night

 

December 28 1872 Saturday

            Reese on hand  after feeding was all day getting wood  In eve took Mary & Rachel & Children to Mikes on sled with mules in all the hurrey which turn us late with eves work_  J.Browers come here while we were at dinner  Edward went home with him and gave him $5.00 on his work of building stable

            I wraught hard and was verry tired at night felt a great deal of pane_ got poor wood after all a maple in corner of wheat a (sarvis)? tree & an Iron wood which Ed cut

 

December 29 1872 Sunday

            At home all day  a heavey coat snow on the ground  buisey feeding all day fixed bed & tong on jumper with expectation of having a sley ride had not time for feeding_  Robert com after Rachel & children  Mike & Sarah come from (tunnel)? meeting after dinner was over  went home before dark after seeing Call was sick from bleeding of the lungs_  Is considered dangerous_  Her father and mother with her at night  holding consultation

 

December 30 1872 Monday

            Reese on hand  helping me feed & verry slow & poking helping get sled out of barn to put bed on to go for load cole to Leesburgh would not do what I bid him to help drive back sheep from Edw when he went down after the mules he and brought up sled from barn while I mended bitchen_  being too late to go for the cole I set him to cut wood while I finished the bed didint half do it_  After night I went down to Mikes to see him about butchering when I come back at 11 oclock I had to cut some of the wood over

 

December 31 1872 Tuesday

            Rees on hand  after doing feeding he & Ed yoked oxen went down below barn for two chop loggs to build fire to butcher hoggs Ed giving out when they brought them up on account of slush & rain he & I went after a load of old dry wood for kindling_  concluded not to butcher hoggs_  Jim Overholt & Mike come & butchered the steer in barn_  I cleaning out cattles sheep & colts places under which was a big job for me, while they were dressing steer_

            A festival down at meeting house & I here alone so ends the year

            Reese on and reding up wood  Wm.Johnson come to salt pork beef & stuff sausage etc  Reese & I hauled load straw & put in stable  Ed helped Johnson in eve to stuf sausage etc  Call verry sick  Lide come up in eve after The got home to see her  come up & stay with us till sunday when J.J. come after her & children  I at home all day _Owes Johnson for helping

            Wettish day  Ezra on hand  he and Ed at cart bed when I come home  I receaved of R.H.S. to convert into eastern checks first $400.00 after of him $100.00 & $30.00= 130.00= 530.00

            A fine day  Theadore rode Joseph Mare up to leave her in pasture_ I went to John Adams and stayed with him over night

            At home all day close  feeding & clean stables  Fixing latch on barn door  Ed come home from Leesville noon  Young Lee here to look at sheep  had supper & horse feed but more on a spark  Ed brought bad news about Joseph going to leave his family for good

            Forenoon Ed & I took some crib to sheep house & fixed trofts for sheep  Big dinner at Mikes  We all went & dined with them Theador family Lilley & Carry thare also  after dinner come up with Mother & Mandy  stayed all night.

            At home all day  only while I went up to Fouts to see Joes horse  After I went to meeting  Rev Stevens preached text  Ocupy till I come  Theadore and family here  Lilly & Carry also  all went home after dinner.

            Forenoon feeding shelling corn & Young Galliker come here looking to buy weathers  After dinner I went to J. Boulands & Leesburgh got 15 cts worth writing paper & envelops  paid for them rode coon mare  did not get back till after night  verry muddy

            Fouts & A. Jeffers here forenoon looking at timber to chop for saw  Set to meet them on next Saturday at 4 oclock pm at Fouts to see if we can deal  Ian Little here after night today  said he would see us next Monday.

 

January 6 1874 Tuesday

            At home all day  only while I went to town to take handle out of axe  rained all day  Ed fixed under barn for gray mare  I helping and feeding.

 

January 7 Wednesday

            At home all day  verry high water out all over the bottom  The celler nearly a foot deep all ovre the floor.  After breakfast whin done feeding I went to get Mike & Alick to help butcher the sow while Ed set pump in seller to get the water our  was at it by spells till dinner but hardley noticed what we got out  Then butchered the sow after done the feeding & took her to Lew Willet weighed 314 lb at 5 cts come to $15.70  H Weaver helped he come here before dinner  After night Ed went to post office recived letter for me from Robert about J.J. Smith dispatching money to bring him home. Sow is Willot by Cash or pork on Thursday 15th insl his own house after night $15.00 bring ballance due me yet 70/100.

 

January 8 1874 Thursday

            At home all day  tending to the stock  triming the scubery and helping to pump water out of the seller  was at it half of the day H. Weaver & Edward at it  Weaver entitled to 1/2 day for helping butcher yesterday & to day helping pump in seller  I went down to post office  got Advocate  talked with Simmons & B. Allbaugh about trading Gray Mare  refered to pattent  Allbaugh to trade for 2 year old filley- gave Ed cash 30 cts to pay Clendening for Oil Mother got of him.

 

January 9 1874 Friday

            After breakfast Ed & I went to Jim Boulands  from thare to Bowerston to see him but no trade  after I went to P. Conners  not at home & no stock I would have-  home again 1/2 after 2 oclock at home bal of afternoon helping to see to the stock  shelled some corn H. Weaver here by five  just before he started home helped me shell 1 bus of corn

 

January 10 1874 Saturday

            At home all day till after dinner  I went up to Hiram Shults to see him about the seed wheat I owed him  come home by P. Allbaugh to see if he had any thing to trade  Mandy went home to day on the 11 oclock train  I gave her cash on going 50cts  Mary said she gave her 30cts  Edward gave her a R.R. ticket to Bowerston 10cts.

            I went to Leesburgh after feeding and cleaning up  started about 11 oclock  dined with Robert  was informed Joseph got home about 1 oclock last night  away 8 days  left at midle of night the Saturday previous- I  brought Mandy home behind (?nec ose) bay horse  Dan Little here when we come home helping Edward feed stock.

            Dan Little choping gum & sugar trees into fire wood all day only while helping feed  Dan Fierbaugh here with butter for Ed Simon Shilts pasing by  Robert Law here about turkey trade-

            After dinner I went up to P Allbaugh to see Poland about a saw set  Edward, Fred & Mary went to Leesburgh  Ed come home without Mary & Fred

            After supper I took sugar & soda to Fierbaughs to pay him for their butter.

 

January 14 1874 Wednesday

            At home all day R. Law brought back turkey & took away his own-  After dinner Edward hauld one load wood to Mahula Smilley to be charged to Dan Little worth $1.00  hauld 2 loads to Isaac

            Masters to be payed in mill stuff-  worth $2.00  before dinner after shiping butter took grist to Masters Mill of 2 bus corn and 6 bus wheat  Dan & I cut hickory for sled soles  after Dan went to cut load wood for Mahail  only made 1/2 day.

            To day I went to Bowerston to let Clarks know I could not contract with them about the choping  got dinner with J. Overholt (per?) walked didnt get back till nearly night  Dan not working to day  only feeding for his board  Mary got back on noon train after night  went down and received cash $15.00 of Lew Willet on pork delivered to him on 7th (inst?)

 

January 16 1874 Friday

            At home all day  helping tend stock  very cold  Ed & Dan fencing oat (slack?) & hauld load gum wood after noon  Dan went over to corn field to chop sugar tree he felld & cut some last Tuesday  Ed put soal on sled & brought gris Flower & (ink blotch covering part of word) from I Masters  I went over to Overholts to (complain?) of his hoggs

            At home all day  feed & tending to the stock  Ed and the Miss Barns rode Ike & Coon to gundy meeting_  The girls stayed away all night  home early next morning before breakfast.  Hen Weaver over in eve for Tobacco  Dan Little helped me feed  done well.

            At home all day  Dan Little done working but help feed & clean out stables  a wet day particularly the after noon  I hewed down mail handle  Jesse Forscythe here for dinner and most of the after noon with Gundy gray horse  I went down to post office after night.

            Dan Little choping in corn field all day at two white oak trees he cut down  Ed tending to the stock & choring  I went to Leesburg by D. Weyand and bought goods for Nines bot

            At home all day  wet  took Mary over to Mikes on sled with mules come back to barn & Dan & I gathered up some bords to make sheep rack  after dinner went over and made one along lower side_  Ed rode Ike to Leesbrug  away till near night  Dan did not count or make a day.

 

January 22 1874 Thursday

            A fine day  would have done to plow Dan little choping a Maple tree in far corner of corn suble  Edward made & put up a sheep rack Mary & Sarah went to New Market  did not get back till after night  I at home all day only went to station with Mike to meet women folks rained a little while at station  after supper Mike & Sarah went home

            I was over to Fierbaugh after cross cut saw which old M. Fierbaugh sharped & Snary was reparing barn doors.

            Fine day Ed took oxen over to sheep house  Dan Ed & I over thare all day working up old loggs into wood

            In eve Theodor George Ourant & Weller Snee come up from Leesburgh to trade horses  Theador & George Ourant traded by Theadore  giving cash to boot $25.00 got a comming four year old black mare for grey  taking supper & feeing and all left Theadore taking his mare away with him.

 

January 24 1874 Saturday

            Cold and rainy  Dan grubing & choping all day over below sheep house  Ed hauld two loads wood before dinner  mules  After dinner Ed went to Leesburgh on Alik  J. Browers come here while Ed was gone to Leesville to sit but had little grounds to go on I promised to see him again.

            At home  after feeding went to prayer meeting  on my return before dinner found J Overholt & son Norman here for dinner  then went out and looked at the timber  a cold raw day & a sharp freese

            After feeding showed Dan Little whare & what to chop  cut down three trees & cut up part of tops  Ed hauling wood with mules & wagon  I went to Leesburgh with Dans boots to be 1/2 soaled nailed & sewed up sides  dined with John Robey  gave order to Robert for mending boots paid it and bought nails  laying out cash with Robert $2.00  Dans bill for mending boots and pairs new socks $1.00  Rode bay horse  put him stable when I got home.

 

January 27 1874 Tuesday

            At home  a wet day  Mary went on train to see Carry _  I done little or nothing but dress out a pair of soles for (jumper) & got Butcher to weld brace  paid him 15 cts for welding  it five cents too much  Dan done working but help feed  Ed done nothing but feed also.

            Edward went to Leesburg by wagon mules & oxen after load cole & telling him to get order of Robert to get the cole  got it at J. Reppeth? bank of Porter he said 30 bushel at 6 cts = 1.80  home before dark just as I got back of Dan Weyandt  Mary got home just as I left for Leesvill after seeing Carry.

            Dan choping wood all day below barn at old tree top  I helping him part of the time  Mandy rode mare home to Hagerstown  back early with Edward  out all day with mules and express gathering butter & eggs_ awful muddy roads

 

January 30 1874 Friday

            After morning feeding set Dan to grub up Elm tree in orchard which he was at all day _  I mailed postal card to Book publisher Davenport Iowa dated yesterday_  After dinner soliced by Mr. Cassel of Zanesville to take him to Deersville which I done with mules & old bay_  rodes most desperate  Edward been out gathering up butter I left here 2 minutes after 2 oclock  arived Deersvill 5 oclock with no intentions to return  found it too bad and Mrs Cassel concluded to stay all night  Mike got oxen to take load hay to Bowerston

 

January 31 1874 Saturday

            In Deersville this morning  Received of Sister Sarah Simonton cash $100.00 one hundred Dollar to be appropriated on a recpt I hold again her husband cauling for $2000.00 which I gave her a Recept for_  After early breakfast left for home with Mr. Cassell of Zanesville home before 11 oclock  he paying me three & a half dollars for taking to & from Deersvile_  Dan diging up elm tree in orchard at it all day  after dinner I rode Ike to Leesville and while there got Joseph to cut my hair  dark when I got back and Dan left for Sprags.

            At home all day  hard freese  dry and cold  Mary & Ed went to hear Rev. Stevenson preach  Mandy went home with J. Heastons daughters after meeting_  James Overholt Mike & Sarah dined with us.

            At home all day  Ed & Dan haul wood forenoon  Hauld 3 loads  2 here for the house  1 load to Mahail Smiley which Dan is to pay for worth $1.00  After noon Dan Cut down large old stump of White oak tree below the barn above Fierbaughs little gate  Ed minding Fred while Mary and Mandy went to Mikes  Old john Crawford up here awhile I got bay horse shod all round by Butcher  paid him cash for  $1.10 two new shoes & 2 removes

 

February3 1874 Tuesday

            At home  Dan choping  fell a big tree in lower side of field in front of barn_  Edward got Mules shod all round  2 new shoes on Jack before & (6) removes  bill for shoeing $1.45 so said Edward  After dinner he drove mules to express to Leesburg  Amen Hurless here for dinner and stayed 2 or 3 hours  a kind of damp chilly air all day.

 

February 4 1874 Wednesday

            At home forenoon went to Leesville after dinner  Dan resting his sore hands  I bought him pant pattern triming lining & pr suspenders  pant pattern lining & trimings 2.50 suspenders .50  $3.00

            I brought up the little black mare to keep a while_  Edward got the mules shod with Butcher.

           

 

February 5 1874 Thursday

            At home all day  Dan Choping after done feeding below barn in old top and green tree in lower side of clover field till feeding time  Ed hauld up 3 loads wood from big rock below barn  after dinner took sled load hay chaff over on corner of rye & brought back load wood_  Theofalis Smith here engaging in grafting_ I went to Fierbaughs sawmill looking timber for Ox yokes and found it  back then to feeding.

            At home all day feeding  Dan helping me shell corn before dinner  after dinner he went to chop a while at elm tree in orchard tinkering at jumper soles till I quit to go feed.  Edward went to Leesville for load cole for blacksmith Butcher  delivered to  Joseph Master said he hauld 25 bushels from J Prices bank_  quite snowy afternoon

            At home all day  all of forenoon soaling little sled did not get quite done before dinner  dan helping Ed getting rods to fastin shafts and tong on_  After dinner Ed took his mother to Mikes  guite a snow on the ground  Brethren protracted meeting going on _ Mandy had a Bough to night in parlor

            After feeding I cleaned up and went to Leesville_  All the rest went to Brethern meeting_  Theod wife child & Lilley here before the meeting commenced_  Lilley come with her granMother to dinner  was here when I come home  Dan away all day  did not be here to feed  scullering around at old John Trusals to see his cousin sude.

 

February 9 1874 Monday

            At home all day feeding  only while I shelled 1 1/2 bus corn and took it to Mill  Dan help forenoon  afternoon cutting wood for cousin Mahale

            Edward went to Leesville to help Theadore haul wood to the railroad with mules  hauled 4 loads  away all day  not back till after 7 oclock

            I am rather unwell with cold in my head  not very cold  thawing some in afternoon

 

February 10 1874 Tuesday

            After breakfast served subpoena on Wm Law come back and went to Bowerston to see if H Boor had the cant hook done  looked at Joseph Overholts cattle & home before dinner  Miss Shelts & Beckey Huff here for dinner_  I went over to Old Overholts after but missed my errand

 

February 11 1874 Wednesday

            At home all day  after feeding done Dan helped me sort sheep took till late dinner_  After dinner choped a couple hours at elm tree in orchard  did not make a good half day_  Had M. Gundy Mrs. Snary Mike & Sarah here for dinner_  Ed returned from Leesville soon after we was done dinner  After all went away and little or nothing done to day

 

February 12 1874 Thursday

            First after breakfast when done feeding I went down to station epecting to see J. Snary but mised him I went into see G. Adams  he was better, come back home & went to Leesville trou B. Overston & back home in eve same way getting little steel cant hook of Henry Boor which he said worth $1.00  did not pay for it as H Boor thought he owed it_  Left Dan choping at elm in orchard, soon after Isaac Channals come to split rails  took Dan to help Saying Ed went to meeting but after dinner  help Dan saw more rail lumber

            At home all day  ranney & wettish  forenoon looking for wedge timber  Channels & Dan went out an hour before dinner  Ed and Mandy went to meeting  Channel and Dan out a while after dinner  split some 35 rails  broke off by rain  come in & was grinding axes till night  a wet afternoon  Dan went to get his pants_  This was day of Buchannans sale

            At home all day  protracted meeting going on at Brethern Church_  I gave Dan cash this morning  Twenty five cts to donate to the church  25 cts

            Mandy rode black mare home today  back in evening_  Nobody here to day  Sie Long brought his cow to the bull this evening and he served.

            Forenoon Family went to Brethern chruch  namely Mary Ed Fred Mandy & Dan Little  none of them back till 2 oclock_  I was out with Isaac Channals showing him what to do in the way of makeing rails_ After dinner sent Dan out with him to saw off two large rail cuts before his tending to the feeding _  Edward & I fixed up to go to Cadiz to tend court  got as far as J M Peck & stayed with him all night

 

February 17 1874 Tuesday

            Edward & I left J.M. Pecks this morning for Cadiz  did not away thare till after 10 1/2 oclock  our case did not come on that day on account of Moors being on hand & lasted all that day  got our dinner supper at the Swan house and lodged then left our mules with McCormick at rate of 65 cts pr day

 

February 18 1874 Wednesday

            Morning at Swan house  after breakfast went to court  my case enter first and took till noon to get done with  witnesses Eslep made his first speech ajourned & went to dinner_  After the pleading done jury went out about 3 oclock_  Ed & I stayed till 4 pm  they were not done then so we left for home and arived home soon after 8 pm oclock all safe & sound_  Expenses as follows  T Swans bill $3.00 for 4 meals & 2 lodgings each_  McCormicks livery bill $1.75/100 for 2 mules 1 1/3 days

 

February 19 1874 Thrusday

Channels to saw 2 rail cuts then choping & sawing up tree top bal of day till feeding time  Ed went to Leesburgh express and mules  not back till after night  Channels went home about 4 oclock so said Dan Little.

            At home all day  only while I went down to station to hear the result of law suit by J. Howards letter  Channels did not get back till near 11 oclock  I ground his axe at dinner  set cross cut saw & sent Dan with him to saw off some rail cuts and I consider they made good speed after all_

            At home all day and a very wet one too  Isaac Channels left awhile after breakfast_  Dan Little sived 6 bus wheat too go to Mill_

            At home all day  a Wettish dull day and very high water  every thing was drowned_  Ed Mandy Dan & Fred all went to Brethern Church None of them back for dinner but Daniel Mary & I alone till near night  after I went down to Squire Johnstons  he was not at home  met Willes Law thare & left there in company with Samuel

            Our seller full of water  hardley know what to do with it  the 3rd time this winter.

 

February 23 1874 Monday

            A damp cloudy morning  after feed commenced to pump water out to seller  concluded to quit it and dig a drain which dan was at most of the day  after Michal was here on his way to town  I done but little my self only lay it off for Dan & see some to the feeding ect etc_  I borrowed Joseph Peabody post digger & crow bar

 

February 24 1874 Tuesday

            At home all day  Dan diging drean from seller all day_  Edward haul 3 loads wood from large tree top in lower side of field opposite of barn and took 6 bus of wheat to Mill before dinner_ After dinner helping Dan in drean_

            Channels come before dinner to go make rails  done nothing before his dinner_  While at dinner Robert come to tell about his imbarisment and of his going to Cadiz  left for home about 4 oclock.

            Ed & I went to feeding  a fair day

 

February 25 1874 Wednesday

            At home all day  Channels split rails till dinner_  After feeding Ed & Dan went to haul some dry wood for fire place  haul 3 loads  I out helping till dinner  after they hauld load hay over to sheep house then quit  Channels went home  not working after dinner_ A snowey blustery day_  Mary went over to Michaels, not home at 9 oclock  stayed thare all night & next day till after dinner time when Ed went after with jumper

 

February 26 1874 Thursday

            At home all day  only while I rode over to Mikes to see how the child was  Dan choping wood at house all the forenoon  after dinner Ed htched up & hauld 2 loads wood from the Elm tree in orchard  Dan & I choped a little while & then they went to haul Manuer from stable door to let it open till feeding time

 

February 27 1874 Friday

            At home all day hauling saw loggs to Fierbaugh saw Mill  Dan Cutting down a tree at line fence beyond elm_  James Sprown here for dinner  cut up the tree and got two 14 foot loggs to the Mill hauld 6 tie logs and two post loggs besides it

 

February 28 1874 Saturday

            After feeding and cleaning myself up about 1/2 after 10 oclock I went to Leesburgh  dined with Robert_  After 3 oclock went to Dan Weyandts  1 pr short Boots which he said was worth $5.00  not home till after dark  spent in Leesville for Tob 10 cts Candy 5 = 15

            Dan Little hauling dung most of day with mules to sled out on knubs on wheat stuble  some 6 loads  Said Edward some unwell with boil on back of his neck

 

March 1 1874 Sunday

            After breakfast I went to Leesville to have a talk with Robert about his pecunary matters  dined with him  rode blake filley  come home in company with D. Shilts through Bowerston and home before night_  R.H. says he is some cramped  in other words hard up but think he can weather through if his creditors dont push on him all at one time  has plenty to meet his liabilaties on the country but it is a little hard to collect now

 

March 2 1874 Monday

            When breakfast and feeding over I went after D Fierbaugh & Mike to alter young Bull & 2 piggs  After dinner I went to Leesville for Roberts bay filley coming 1 year old & brought it home  Isaac Channels here making rails  come some time before dinner  went home after supper whin I gave him order on store to Robert for one dollar and 40 cts_  Dan was triming up in orchard the old peach trees & some apple trees  Edward help a little but unwell_

            Mr. & Mrs. Crawford up here to sit awhile

 

March 3 1874 Tuesday

            First after breakfast Ed & Dan took 8 peices of meat to Crawfords to smoke  come back  started plow  only went 2 rounds before dinner  Dan plowed most of after noon  After 3 oclock I took my new short boots back to D. Weyandts which I brought home last Saturday eve 28th which was five dollars  he measured my foot over and agreed to make me a pair of high shoes last of this week  not back till dark

 

March 4 1874 Wednesday

            A wettish forenoon  Ed & Dan soled a sled  Dan sived 1/2 bus wheat & Edward fixed up a place for little filley at barn  I mending some gears before dinner  After dinner Ed & Dan went to plow  Dan diging around & up stump  I got a couple of hand spikes and mend headstall of blindbridal till feeding time_  After supper set a hen Youngsters went to prayer meeting

 

March 5 1874 Thursday

            Ed went to Leesville with oxen & mules for load cole  took down a gag of hay in & on bed of wagon  brought back 25 bus cole which Robert got of Jim Price  cost two dollars  away all day  I hitched up Ike & Coon to express and took Mandy along  Dan choped down a tree joining Eds lot and sawed one cut off of it and made a fens rail till afternoon  did not amount to much what he done

 

March 6 1874 Friday

            At home all day  a wet forenoon  shelled some corn & took 2 bus to Mill_  After dinner Ed plowing & Dan & I choping & sawing at large tree in lower side of field opposite barn_  At night I receaved a letter of J. N. Hedges to know if I would sell bay mare

 

March 7 1874 Saturday

            Mary and I went to Leesville today to get something for Sarah Mandy and ourselves  I got 2 matocks sharped & post diger welded  Edward plowing all day after we left  Dan choping sawing and make a few rails down in corner of field whare Ed was plow  did not amount to much 

            Mary bought goods of Robert to amount of $2.37 for Mandy  I had charged to for (tallon?) & bal to Ed Benadinm 20 & 15 =35

            Ed Benadim by 1 pr sheet iron .45  by (Spouting?) house 14.40 Mending coffee pots & brick .35  To order on RH Smith 15.20 to amount of fifteen 20/100 dollars which I gave RH the cash for       bought 2 cast beam ball plow points which I also paid Robert for .85  order to Sim Martin for twenty five .25  which I also left Robert the cash for  paid Joseph for the one hand cross cut saw & files I got of him in fore part of last winter the amount in all was $4.00

 

March 8 1874 Sunday

            Dan Little To 1 pr old Boots 3.00  At home all day  cold & raw fresing  Mike & Sarah here to dinner in the evening  I took a walk over to J.M. Holmes & G.W. Adams  Dan Little to 1 pr old calf boots that Old Billey Buchannen made me in Freeport $3.00  To 1 wagon load wood next 1.00 morning delivered by Edward mules

 

March 9 1874 Monday

            At home all day  forenoon sent postal card to Uhrichville and letter to Cadiz to Hedge_  Set Dan to chop two Butter Nut trees in bottom  Edward hauld load wood to Mahala Smitly for Dan_  After dinner Ed yoked oxen and hauld 5 butter nut loggs and 1 post logg to Fierbaugh saw Mill  cut down an Elm and it was hollow

 

March 10 1874 Tuesday

            At home all day  Dan choping up tree top on lower corner of plowed ground  after noon went to trim sugar tree that blew down_ Theodore come before dinner and he & Ed went out to buy butter & eggs  come back at night_  Michal had oxen to help haul hay to Bowerstown_  Mary was at Mikes all day_  I was tinkering after noon at calfhouse door and other things

 

March 11 1874 Wednesday

            At home till after 6 oclock in eveen whin I started for Uhrichville  Dan choping Oak tree down in corner of plowed ground nearly all day  in evening trimed a little in sugar tree before feeding the sheep_  Ed went to Leesville in forenoon for Sarah Fierbaugh Dress  afternoon haul stone for drean off of plowed ground Michal Sarah & I left for Uhrichville 18 minutes after 7pm  They stayed with Wm. H. Smith I with bro John  Fare I paid 45 cts in making change I gave Mike to pay hack man 15 cts

 

March 12 1874 Thursday

            Mike & Sarah started West from Edgefield Tuscarawas Co at 4 1/2 oclock A.M.  I breakfast with bro John & loafed around till 10 oclock A.M. then up to Denason till 12 oclock & 5 minutes  home after 1 oclock P.M.

            Dan & Ed fixing under barn all day_  I started for Leesville at 5 oclock P.M.  had a cold ride_  Heard a good lecture  Farehome 45ct from Denason  paid Escles for pamplet at lecture 25 cts  so goes the morning

 

March 13 1874 Friday

            In Leesburgh at 9 oclock  breakfast lodged with Theodore  cold as any time this winter

             Started home before dinner on Coon mare  Dan haul wood with oxen cart from medow field opposite barn  After early supper I went to Leesburgh hear more lecture  Took back two of the 3 coats I brought up to fit Dan $5.25 and sent cross cut saw by Lee Dulley to get it sharped.  I heard a philosophical lecture  slept at Theadores

 

March 14 1874 Saturday

            In Leesburgh this morning  breakfast with Theadore  was rather a cold night_  I bought 10 in file of J. J.  to have David Newell to sharp cross cut saw charged 40cts for sharping  gave cash twenty and had credit of two old file points for minding  dined with Robert

put saw on Dulleys wagon  come home  Dan & Ed had been in corn stuble choping sugar trees  after supper Ed went to Leesville  Jim Laney come here paid out cash 75 cts for file saw sharp & candy for Freds fits  20 sharp  5 for candy & pea nuts  Ed away sparking till middle of night

 

March 15 1874 Sunday

            Mandy & I went to Leesburgh after breakfast to hear lecture on spiritulism  Mandy back before night  I not back till 12 oclock at night  Mary & Ed home all day  Dan running around to his kin & prayer meeting etc.

 

March 16 1874 Monday

            Dan Weyandts by 1 pr boots 7.00/1.00 half soaling & mended

            I at home all day tending stock & make Mattock handle  Ed went to Dan Weyandts for 1 pr fine boots  cost $7.00 and 1/2 soaling his boots & mending Freds boots for 75  in all equal $8.00

            Dan Little tinkering around choping a little wood at house & feeding  Edward away most all day

 

March 17 1874 Tuesday

            At home all day  laying off lumber over near schoolhouse for Ed & Dan to saw  cut up all the down timber over thare  done well while at it  Sold J Dunlap two red heffers for $45.00  Receaved $5.00 on them to bind contract to be taken on next Tuesday 24th next I to help away with them_  Then went and bought old granny cow

 

March 18 1874 Wednesay

            At home all day  Ed plowed till broke off by rain  Dan yoked up oxen to haul out some stumps  after dinner sive some wheat & shell some corn  I mending some harness straps etc etc  Dan & I counted the rails  Channels made 551 in corn field & 73 over river  Dan says he helped to split 200 besides helping saw for 150__  The granny heffer cow had a fine calf down near Fierbaugh line fense  Edward discovered her as he and Dan was coming up from saw Mill Whare the had been helping roll up loggs

 

March 19 1874 Thursday

            Mandy To 50 lb Flower 4 1/2 

            A kind of showery day  Dan choping in corn stuble over beyond sheep house all day only while feeding  Edward plowing some  Heram Crumley passing & got dinner_  I went to Leesville after dinner taking Mrs. Barns 50 lb Flower  Bot lin seed & clover seed to amt of $3.50  23lb clover seed at 8 1/2 = 192   23lb lin seed 162_ Little pale heffer had calf while I was gone  Dan carried it up to barn & he and Ed put them in front of (cot?) in Mauhals

 

March 20 1874 Friday

            At home all day  Ed plowing  Dan yoke up oxen and went to haul out some stumps before dinner  after dinner he & I hauld up 2 loads stone to gate going out in front of meeting house and helped him load most of 3rd load  when T.Smith Preston & young Newell come to graft said they put in 164 grafts at 3 cts each  if all grows would come to 492 cts_ They stayed all night had supper lodging breakfast two horses which caused me to turn out bay horse_  Hauled two load stone on road to S. Heastons order besides 3 to make walk across   Mandy had black mare out all till after 2 oclock  she said to S. Shilts.

 

March 21 1874 Saturday

            At home all day  a fine day  Ed plowing_  Smith Preston & Newell by their teem while they went to graft for J. M. Holmes  was not long doing his job & left soon after breakfast

            The cali cow had calf last night under barn though hurt some now seems to be doing well_  Dan and I first after feeding hauled 1 load stone to fill wash in lane then haul load wood to I. Masters before dinner  after dinner hauld another making 2 loads to pay on some Rye he is to grind for me forepart of next week_  After gave Dan cash and he started off visiting little after 2

            At home all day  a fine dry cold day_  Ed rode Coly mare to Leesville  Robert here for dinner on his rone mare telling me Theadore & Joseph traded sorell mare off yesterday for a rone horse

 

March 23 1874 Monday

            A cold raw day  took the two young red cows to Dunlaps, dined with him Mary & Fred in Bowerston tending organizeds on for Whiskey war_  Dan Little back from J. Sprays again late dinner time  split a few rails G. Husard then helped me saw off two rail cuts and then feeding_  Ed plowing all day_  I. Channels come some time before dinner to make rails over on hill joining Lyons

 

March 24 1874 Tuesday

Channels here make rails  Tobacco got of Theadore 25 cts Theadore here for dinner By 3 Plugs Tobacco for Channels 25cts_  Dan Complaining of sore rist  sorry he engaged to chop  talked to Mandy of leaving  he and Ed went out to saw loggs on corn stuble_  I fixed up and started for Cadiz at 3 oclock got to Mathew McCoys again dark they ware at supper when I went in_  Recd of I. Masters this morning 7 bus Rye at 70 cts pr bus comes to 4.90 paid for  grinding 55 cts all equal $5.45  paid 3 loads wood & cash $2.45 which closed

 

March 25 1874 Wednesday

            A cold frosty morning  left M. McCoys after breakfast went and talked with J. Coleman at steem Mill then to counsel with Easlep  dined with Swan  bill .40  horse feed McCormick .20  Left for home after 2 oclock or about sun down_  I. Channels here make rails  I gave him cash on them $1.00

            Mary & Fred just returned while I was at supper  verry sick  Dan haul manure with oxen all day onley while feeding  haul 6 loads Ed help saw 3 rail cuts for Channels

 

March 26 1874 Thursday

            A fine mild morning  after feeding Ed & Dan went to haul stack of oats & hay  I went to Leesburgh  not back till night  Ed & Dan commenced fence up draft west of rye patch  haul corn  stones and some rails_  I promised to caul and see Channels but did not do it for want of money  I believe he was working at Crawfords North of Bowerston  I got black mare shod by S. Masters  four removes cost 50 cts paid RHS cash for telling him to pay Masters which was done before I left town

 

March 27 1874 Friday

            Fine dry moring

            Ed & Dan went to finish fence at patch Rye and when done went at seller drain_  I started for Jerry Brown  got dinner with him could trade onley  offered Bowers colt and the Niger Colt_  Next went to Franklin to see T. Worstell then to Deersville  at Simontons all night  cold frosty night
