April 20
1872 Saturday
I went to Leesville through Hagerstown to see Robert Before starting to
Philadelphia Pa.-.and to get Bet Mare shod before got two new shoes put on
before by Rob told him Robert would settle for it-also told Joseph Johnson &
Theadore to credit Baker with it that it was for his Roberts H. business I was
getting her shod to attend to after come home through Bowerstown to attend
school election and I was a candidate for Director but was beat by Isaac Masters
by one vote.
At home all forenoon feeding and doing up chores till noon Theadore come with
his wife Lide Clide baby and boy before dinner went on to his mother in laws
leaving Lidy and children here for dinner after I prepared to start for Cadiz
did not get started before 4 O'clock in eve looked like rain all the evening
only got to John McPeeks stayed there all night, had my supper and mare fed and
made welcome and comfortable after breakfast before leaving I made present of
fifteen cts each to his two little boys = 30cts.
April 22
1872 Monday
I started
from J. McPeeks after breakfast about 7 0'clock for Cadiz falling in company
with Wm S.Osburn after I met Tom Baker takeing load oats to Fairview- put up my
mare with Bill Houser. cost me 25cts Went to First National Bank and got Draft
on First National Bank New York for Eighteen hundred dollars and mailed it
before 11o'clock A.M. for Phil. gave the $800.00 Robert gave me on the
Friday
before in stable and the 800.00 I recd of Aunt M. Dean which I receaved on 19th
March and drew ballance out of Bank drew $274.00 on account using $75. of Mrs
Deans for Theadore
After went in and saw judg Lemmon and appointed latter part of May to settle up
the Estate.
Then started for home with out any din come by Beckets home again 4p.m. but
was very cold and after I got some refreshment went to feeding and just before
dark sold black horse to Mansfield for cash had to give $175.00 a leather halter
with him.
April 23
1872 Tuesday
Went to Overholts field to harrow before grain Drill to sow Oats with Bet mare
and Frank horse, but did not get out till after dinner Mike drove Drill with
Mules I am wrong it was late start after breakfast and had to bring back the
Oats and run them through the ? Mill Edward helping old Dan before dinner and
after took the Oxen & and low wagon and went to Ed Lockrages for load hay and
did not get back till after night so Ed spent the whole day and oxen & wagon the
after noon
April 24
1872 Wednesday
I was harrowing all day at Overholts before Mike with Drill and Michal very
reluctantly stayed the after noon on account of his saying his both teems was
idle
Edward went to fix the fence over the creek to let the cattle have range and did
not get done until midle of after noon = when he met with young Greenwalt and
attacked him to hire.
Michal Fierbaugh got the pair of largge shoes I got of John Robey in Leesville
they were verry little warn and worth $3.00 three dollars.
April 25
1872 Thursday
Harrowing at Overholts the forenoon Michal Drilling finished sowing before
dinner and bought home plows & harrow Michal left Drill at schoolhouse untill
after dinner and then I went with him to harrow
I hired young Greenwalt this morning after breakfast at the rate of $12.00 per
month washing & mending in and when either gets displeased to quit.
Edward and greenwalt at Fierbaugh all day helping used Oxen some in forenoon
and plowed down at saw mill after noon, and did not get back till after night on
account of unloading wagon to bring it home.
April 26
1872 Friday
After I got ready about 11 o'clock Mary and I went to Leesville Edward went
over to Fierbaugh with Mules to plow and plowed all day- Greenwalt hauling
manure with oxen all day.
I brought home $1.00 worth cole from Prices bank, 1 pint castor oil for
lantern- paid Theadore for cole Oil & all I got I dont know what Mother got on
tick.
April 27
1872 Saturday
W. Greenwalt to cash on his work $1.00 got Frank horse to ride to Freeport to
return tomarrow- Edward hauling manure all day, I feeding and doing chores close
at home all day- In after noon shaved and commenced to write in this Diary for
the first.
April 28
1872 Sunday
At home all forenoon and just got washed up before dinner as Mary come from
prayer meeting.
While Mary and I was at dinner about 1 o'clock Edward returned from the
dedication of the Christian Union Church up at the Bakersfield school house and
Whit returned from Freeport on Frank horse and had him pretty warm.
After dinner I went to Leesville to see if Robert had got home he had I stayed
but a short time and returned back through Hagerstown
Whit Greenwalt got back again 1/2 after 1 o'clock and had Frank horse prette
warm.
April 29
1872 Monday
A fine clear warm morning started the plow in the corn stubble with Whit &
mules Ed & I then went to prepare grist of corn & rye for chop feed gave I.
Masters 50 lbs to grind it without tolling 8 bushels five corn & three rye Ed
spread manure in garden after commenced plowing it with the oxen and they done
well but we did not got done by 1\3 of it Whit was plowing all day.
April 30
1872 Tuesday
Warm and sultry Whit at plow with the Mules all day- Ed & I finished the
garden and then Ed harrow it with the oxen before diner- After dinner I went up
to G. Easterdays to see his nursery etc etc A. English there buying
evergreens- I went on to Solomon Smiths for the 4 yearlings which was there one
month for four dollars to $1.00 per head I gave him order on R.H Smith store
for $6.00 two dollars of it for straw.
Looked stormy and rained just as I got home and it was much needed.
May 1 1872
Wednesday
Wettish morning but went out to plow runing two teams Whit plowing mules I Bet
& frank but broke of about 10 oc by shower_ but went out again about 4 oclock
and finished the land intended for oats Whit & Ed plowed while I cut straw

Thursday
Whit & I went up to I. Heastons after breakfast to change oats
Ed went after Drill as soon as got readey commenced sowing before dinner, got
done again
Whit hauling Ash pile with oxen, while I harrowed and Edward drilled in Oats
James Overholt over at night and I knew he wanted some favor of Edward
Amon Hurless & S. Easterday come just as we was going to dinner to alter little
Rocket colt first thing after dinner, ordered the clamps to be left on untill
earley on saturday morning
May 3 1872
Friday
Edward went to help J. Overholts to plow and harrowing his Oats_ Whit went to
mill with oxen for chop feed complained of spraining his wrist so to favor him
we went to taging sheep_ After we were trimming 2 Apple trees till feeding time
when Ed got home from Overholts

I was busy all day at home first thing took clamps off Rocket
After breakfast Edward call and Children Whitt & Ame Masters all went to
Leesville Whit said he got pants vest & pocket knife on my account some over $8
Jesh Forseythe & teem here for his diner & horses feed to meet his brother to
take him to Freeport

A beautiful morning but a sharp frost as also yesterday morning a sharp frost
S. Hedges come here with Mary & Edward from Brethern church before dinner after
dinner Edward went to Leesville for Cal & Fred Hedges got Bet to go to
Deersville left about 4 pm oclock
Whit went away after breakfast and did not return till after night
May 6 1872
Monday
Fine dry day Edward & Whit hauling manure from stable & chip yard all day with
oxen I helped while I was not tending sheep & cattle Edward & Whit went to fix
gate & fence between us & Wm. Johnson joining creek oppesite Demings lot then
hauled Load wood to W. Johnson
This was my birth day
May 7 1872
Tuesday
Edward & Whit hauling manure out of calf lot with oxen & low wagon all day
hauld some 12 loads
S. Hedges come back from deersville a little after 10 oclock brought his mare
just as Mary an I was starting to Leesville with Mules for load cole for A.
Trusell brought her 20 bus from J.Price Bank measured by Jerry West which I
paid Robert for_ We Robert & I gave new note to Mary Dean dated from 1st April
last extending for three years with eight per cent intrust to be paid simi
annually cauling for eight hundred dollars $800.00
After I took pant pattern to be made & vest fixed to cotter & pant & vest for
Edward all to be made for $4.00 left 70 cts which Ed paid him for cutting
gave Robert cash $10 ten dol to meet S. Smith order of six dols for straw &
pasture $26.00
May 8 1872
Wednesday
After doing up the chores I went to Wm Parmers sale on Bet, left Ed & Whit
hauling manure from below barn & at it all day
I gave Mother yesterday eve $16.00 sixteen dollars to pay Robert for Carpet &
oil cloth in all that eve $26.00
After leaving sale I come home to Masterville hitched up Mules and went to Lees
after Mary having left her there eve before on account of hauling load cole &
appearance of rain
J. Holmes rode home with us on Lounge & Turkey tick

Thursday
After getting things done I fixed up and went to Deersville to collect acpt on
Thos McIlroy but failed
Edward & Whit at manure below barn with oxen & low wagon
Rode Frank to Deersville leaving here about 11 oclock A.M. & I stayed there till
1/2 after 6 in evening
JJ got home this eve from Philadelphia Pa-
May 10 1872
Friday
Edward & Whit finished Manure at barn Early after dinner with oxen & cart under
barn__ Ben Johnson come up & got low wagon
Mike come up & got Mules & Express for his Father to go to Bowerston
I went to Leesville after dinner to see if Joseph had got home and bought palm
hat & garden seeds to ampt 10cts and did not get home untill after night on
account of show bet mare to Bill Wilson
Boys got done manure soon after dinner & went put up fence between corn field &
pasture

Ed & Whit spreading manure on corn field planting seeds in garden washed off
top Bugey & other chores
I was mending haulters besides other fixing home all day S.Hedges come back at
night from Wheeling

At home all day went to meeting fore & after noon Rev Hagge preached
Theadore & wife passed up to Englishes & Lesle took her Mother back home with
her
May 13 1872
Monday
Commenced plowing for corn Whit with mules & Edw & I with Hedges mare & Frank
Hedges left for Uhrichville 11 oclock, I remained at plow all day opening up
lands down on sod and [shapeing]
for left &
right hand plows_ Edward changed Hedges mare for Bet to lead in plow
May 14 1872
Tuesday
Whit & Edward went to plow as usual, till I got trough with chores then went and
took Edwards place, to let him go help J. Overholts to plant corn I plowing
with Bet & Frank till noon_ when I took out Hedges mare in place of Bet Edward
getting back about 4 oclock p.m., took took my place & I went to feed sheep &
salt cattle over creek which kept me untill night
May 15 1872
Wednesday
Whit & Edward went to plow I fixed up and took old bugey to Leesville with Bet
got there about 1 oclock dined with Theadore then got Baker to put a new set of
l inch Pins & washers on bugey and Joseph's Express wagon shafts allined for new
express, left it at shop & brought up Roberts pig in his Express with george &
princes horses did not get back till night when boys got done plowing for corn
I left Bet mare in leesburgh
May 16 1872
Thursday
Whit went to help Mike Fierbaugh plant corn
Edward commenced harrowing down on sod
I went to look for John Holmes little plow found it at Crawfords took Alick
mule and run off his lot which took me till dinner, brought home plow and
commenced runing off my own after dinner till night
May 17 1872
Friday
Whit went out after breakfast to run off with Alick but was not doing well and I
sent him to trim sugar tree_ Edward harrowing I running off when Mickal come &
went home for Fan about 9 oclock & he & I run off and got done about 2 1/2
oclock when Phillip & Jim Overholt come & we commenced planting and worked on
till night
May 18 1872

Michal & Andrew 1/2 day all planting corn finished again noon_ After dinner
Edward went to Bowerstown to see Joseph Overholts about note come home by J.
Lyons to see Jason Duning and bargained for his Mothers property at $1300.00
$500.00 in hand and $800.00 in two installments yearly with $30.00 interest on
last payment from 1 June next Whin deed to be Executed
S. Hedges come here from Uhrichville & he & I fixed and went to Leesville on
Roberts Express wagon with george & Frank horses suped with J.J. rained a fine
shower while there come home late with Bet mare & old bugey

Wet morning & coldish all well and at home at 10 oclock I took down the last
weeks notes
May 20 1872
Monday
Whit & I went to shear sick sheep first thing after breakfast he and Edward went
to Overholts to see about washing his sheep_ S. Hedges got bet mare to go to
Deersville I hitched up mules to take Mother & Sarah to Leesville_ Come right
back to keep Ed & Whit from killing granny heffer calf but to late it was killed
& weighed as follows

Whit took oxen to Lees for load cole of J. Price 29 1/4 bushels paid Robert for
Edward working on roads with mules to scraper & wagon
Robert renewed note to Mrs. Colwell for borrowed money to amount of $240.00
dated from 1st of last April 1872 I got the old one date April 1st 1867___
I went to Leesville at 11 oclock after Whit & we dined with Theadore I Drove
Hedges mule & Prince brought home Suleys calf n express wagon
Sam Hedges got backe with bet mare and collected of T McIlrow bal on note to
Estate of R. Smith $37.56
May 22 1872
Wednesday
Whit & Edward went to haul manure ["to put" crossed out] with oxen to low wagon
on lot back of garden 3 loads 2 from barn & 1 from hog pin B.Johnson come to
borrow gun, after hauling manure commenced to plow with oxen, it was showery & I
took the mules to finish while Whit & Edward went to making gates___
S. Hedges started for Urichville on 11 oclock train
It was so showery in afternoon that it kept me till night to finish harrowing &
marking off
The boys planted a fine [bag row] potatoes
May 23 1872
Thursday
Whit first after breakfast went down town after bet mare that went out at gate
I follow her to Fierbaughs who was preparing to go build dam to wash sheep I
sent Whit to fix at his property, After dinner Whit & I went down to haul manure
which kept them till night__
Michal washed his sheep by himself
May 24 1872
Friday
Whit & Edward went to wash sheep I went & got Abe Warner to help Paid him 60
cts A.Hurless come up here paid him for altering colt 1.00
S. Hedges come off of train from Uhrichville I traded him Bet Mare for his Fan
Mare by his booting me cash $100.00 paid seventy five in hand note for twenty
five
got done washing sheep again dinner when Hedges left for Deersville & Edward &
Whit went down to his place to plow lot & garden I went to salt cattle & sheep

Whit & Edward down makeing gardain at his place all day
Mary and I
went to Leesville I took 90 feet ash boards to W.D.Mool at 2.50 pr [hme] 2.25
took Butter & potatoes to Robert go goods over to ampt $19.80/100 Fan & prince &
express wagon bought same back with Molasses Barrell & some Boxes
May 26 1872
Sunday
At home all day Robert and family here with Mrs. Colwell and took back Fan and
Prince. I went to salt cattle after Whit along__ Went up to Strawls after to see
if I could get N. Boyer but failed.
May 27 1872
Monday
Whit left us after breakfast this morning having only put in 23 days of his
month receaved $9.00 of his pay__
I went down to Fierbaughs to see about getting him to alter the lambs, but he
thought it too wet, and put it off__ After Edward and I went down to station
for New Stove Freight on it 71 cts, I bought some old belt leather of I.
Masters to amount of 30 cts- come up and unloaded stove with help of Bell
Johnson & P. Smilley, then took old cook stove to Eds and While unloading come
up a big rain, After dinner I start to Deersville & Bro Williams for piggs and
wagon lathers--got supper at Simontons then went on to Williams
Robert Simonton come here and stayed all night with Mary while I was away.
May 28 1872
Tuesday
At brother Williams this morning, got Eds hay lathers and two piggs weighing
each 100 lbs & 120 lbs at 5 cts per lb- $11.00 to be kept acpt of till we meet
again, I then come to Deersville and gave F.T. Simonton T.McIllroys note
cauling for $83.33/100 bearing intrest for two years Johnston counted it up to
9th inst making all of $93.73/100__ Emma come home with me_ After dinner I took
the piggs to Leesville and bought back $1.00 worth of cole for Edward which I
gave the money to Theadore for Bob getting Price to charge him

Wednesday
At home all day forenoon D. Fierbaugh altered 23 lambs and cut tails off of 21
ewe lambs in all 44 altered 1 calf and 4 piggs_ Robert Simonton left for
home_ Brown of [plum run] and his hand young Levin here for dinner- after noon
feed sheep & salt young cattle
Edward took down cole & went for straw to put in under [Ticks] then hung gate
and filled up rut at gate after took down his cows
This was a fine day.
May 30 1872
Thursday
At home all day after feeding sorting corn & carry it to new crib to shell_
Washed out soak barrel & put alot of corn to soak
Edward went to Bowerston to testify for Donaldson
Theadore there too Edw said he brought over a runner
This morning was wet
Kitty [Simkins] here helping Mary sew up bed tick and change feathers into it
Edward got very sick this evening with old complaint vometed and had to stay all
night he got so weak
May 31 1872
Friday
At home all day after breakfast when chores done up I went & got Phillip to
help me shell some 6 bushels corn_ After dinner I took it to mill, and about
all I done but feed the sheep and chores about the house
June 1 1872
Saturday
After Breakfast Edward and I went to haul brush off of the medow which kept us
till noon_
After dinner about all I done was to bring up meal from the mill being some
unwell_ At night Edward brought up Rogers & son to hire_ which I did
conditionally and he agreed to send him up next Monday morning on trial at
$12.00 per month and wants more if I think him worth it

After breakfast when I cleaned up I went to Leesville on George horse took
dinner with J.J. Smith Aunt Mary Dean & Mrs. Bell McCullough of Jefferson Co
After sat a while with Robert H. Smith & come home through Bowerson a very fine
warm day
June 3 1872
Monday
Charley Rodgers come on according to contract after breakfast and helped Edward
to hoe potatoes sive grist wheat for mill and replant corn
Mary Emma & I went to Leesville, Bought Queens ware stone ware & wash tub I paid
cash over her butter $1.63 to Theadore
I got a new shirt from Lida which she said she paid Widow Demster for makeing 75
cts I gave Lide cash to settle it $1.00
Left Wm. Emma there and come home in eve trough Bowerston with Sarahs things
June 4 1872
Tuesday
Charley Rodgers choring around and fixing barn with Edward in forenoon to shear
sheep- afternoon they went to cut thissels over in field below wheat- I was
mending some straps and salting stock drisley treatning rain and got quite cool
in evening-
Mr. G. Adams & Mrs. Pulan school teather suped with us in eve- Edward put up the
weather's lot of sheep to sheer
After supper I went to look for shearers but only went to Fierbaughs when I
altered my notion & come back and let out sheep went down to town with Michal to
change shears & visit A. Trusal
June 5 1872
Wednesday
Charley & Edward went after breakfast to help Fierbaughs replant and put plaster
on cornfield
I fixed up and (took Mary and Emma to Leesville in express with **this text
crossed out) mules (through Hgertown-**crossed out)
I went to
Bowerston to get nails Lamp black spirits turpintine wool turn and to see about
other things but Robert was not at home went to Carlton I come home trough
Bowerston Jason Deming here made & gave over Deeds to Edward and we signed two
notes to one coming due 1rst June 1873 for $400.00 The other coming due 1rst
June 1874 for $430.00
June 6 1872
Thursday
Charley Edward Michal & father commenced shearing Weathers they said there was
49 of them which they shore-got up ewes altered the two Reppith buck lambs in
the evening-
After starting them to sheer I went to S. McGrews sale took dinner with P.
Overholts then went to Leesvill to borrow money to help make Edwards payment
which I got of R.H. Smith $300.00 three hundred dollars got home before supper
trough Bowerston rode george horse- Edward gave his mother $116.00
June 7 1872
Friday
Charley & Michal began Shearing about 9 oclock the morning being wettish-
Edward went to J. Lions to pay J. Deming the cash payment on his property as
soon as he got his chore done up after breakfast $500.00 whin he got back set
in to shearing I tied wool and got very tired Lisle & Emme come up on R.R.
from Leesville and was here all night_ I bought Michals horse IKE on condition
of easey cured and does well I pay him $150.00 if not I give him $130.00 and
run all risks, handed him in the barn at dusk $75.00 and to take him away in
the course of 2 or 3 days when I get readey
Robert here to see about the the stove went with Edward to Overholts for the
sheep and when pend Mike & Charley shore with assistance of Ed shere seven 7
they saying there was some 55

Saturday
Charley Michal & Edward at shearing the Overholt sheep I set in to tying wool
and tied on till done 11 oclock when old Daniel come & relieved me stayed on
untill we finished and worked like heroes till done which was late
J.J. Smith wife & family come before diner on visit and in the eve before
supper bro Williams Sam & Julia come after Emma
June 9 1872

Mary & I went to Hagerstown to church in top bugy G & F horses
The brindle cow buld by our own bull Ed & bro Wm Sam Brought him up -
Theadore and wife here in eve- Sam & two sisters started for home also Theadore
leaving us allone
June 10 1872
Monday
Charley on hand early this morning milked fixed corn I went to J. Holmes to
see if I could get some cabage plants, I then went to Fierbaugh for horse and
paid Michal $3.00 for shearing , besides sent Charley down to help shear about
10 oclock and shore all day
After dinner Mary and I went to Bowerston to see about churn & clock when I
come back went to feed sheep & cattle Adams heffer cow frolecking & bulled_
Ed brought up slop and working down at home & haul some with colts

Charley sheering all day at Fierbaughs I put Ewes & lambs over next J. Lyons
after mending horse yoke-
Theadore come up after Adams cow and took her away after dinner I fixing J.J.
Smiths bugey neck yoke mending bridal etc Edward white washing rails around
house & garden etc
June 12 1872
Wednesday
Charley went back to Fierbaughs to help finish sheering. didnt get back till
middle afternoon or later
Edward hauling wood for Wm Johnson & Crawford forenoon- I went to Leesville &
back by Bowerston (driving mules) before diner turned out wet afternoon I went
to mending breast strap after supper Charley & I went to clean up granary but
got verry little done
I bought 50 cents worth of fish and gave mother 25 cts to pay black woman for
washing to day
Reed of Crawford on 17th inst one dollar for wood hauled by Ed as above- He said
he hauled two loads to Johnston

Thursday
Charley & I went to sive grist wheat Edward helped & cleaned up and red (?) up
grainery and took grist wheat '40 bus to mill before diner
After dinner Charley Ed & I went to Cultivate corn till supper- we heard George
Englishes wife died this morning at 4 oclock
June 14 1872
Friday
Charley on hand helping do up chors oiling carriage and help Edward harnesf
horse for Mary and I to go to G. English wifes funeral, after we had gone went
with Edward to help him down at his house- After coming from berrying I went to
Leesville for 8 paper flour sacks churn & Clock did not get back till after
night paid in Bowerston on my way home 25cts to M. Allbaugh for J. Miller which
I promised him for helping me drive home yearling I bought at his fathers sale
June 15 1872
Saturday
Charley complained of head acke milked cows after breakfast put 3 drums corn to
soak & carrried in some two to shell, while I went down to town with 8 paper
sacks to I. Masters and pay H. Tompson on cookstove 71/100 cts Ed starting
clock and Charley went home
I wrote a letter to S. Hedges in Wheeling shelled corn after dinner moved wool
up 84 fleeces of (mure)? & 56 in Eds lot in all 140 I went over creek to
salt stock Ed to salt his sheep, I gave him $20.00 to pay old man Overholt for
pasture

At home all day Mary and I dined at Edwards after diner he hitch up to
carriage and went up to Gundeys I went over the creek and brought up cows then
after my own- no company here today- Mary and I spent an hour after night at
Crawfords
June 17 1872
Monday
Charley on hand frist thing he & Ed working potatoes while I went to get the
handles of cultavator lowered after we went to working corn the remainder of
the day
Robert brought up his prince horse and lif him over the creek with colts
After supper I went over to Deersville didnt get there till after 9 oclock
June 18 1872
Tuesday
Charley on hand work corn to day when I come home from Deersvile was driving
the cultavator his brother george howing with Edward
I lodged & breakfast with Simonton after recd check of T.McIlroy on First

cock hay_
Ed & I was rakeing with Ike from dinner till supper and it was so warm we could
hardly stand it

Charley went to burying & I dont know how much time he lost but left gate open &
the hoggs distroyed clutch chickens, it threatened rain and rained some

had receaved a payment on it 18th June 1872 leaving ballance at this time

Rees on hand a cold day helping Ed to put away & berry apples forenoon after
noon he and Ed hauld 2 loads wood with Buck & Berry I was fixing the floor of
hog pen & tinkering around put up 4 piggs after night Ed & Rees shelled some
corn Mike & I settled up on cattle matter I gave him $40.00 dollars & yet owes
him $2.85

Rees on hand choring around till Mike come to help select the sheep then with
us to help Mike take muley Buck_ Ed & I put horney Buck with our 55 ewes after
that we hauld in what corn Rees husked on Thursday after noon which Kept us till
night after supper Rees & I shelled corn and fed horses & cattle at stable &
barn, still verry cold.
We counted 121 sheep all togeather 58 ewes three of which I gave to Ed a run
down wether & a young lamb in all 5_ there was 42 lambs & 5 over there put
over towards school house

fix pump $1.00 told Joseph to settle it & charge to me, I ordered Iron wedge
of Steve for 60 cts & told him Edward would pay for the shoeing of mules
supposed it would be $2.25 for 4 new shoes & 4 removes sharped & toed_ Mary
bought some over $6.00 worth of goods which I paid for next day to Joseph with
J.Robeys bill & cole

Afternoon helping Mike haul wood with oxen to his father & himself till night_
I went to Smiths cole bank for load cole with mules hauld 20 bushels cost
$1.20 told Smith to charge to Robert_ I paid Joseph for it and what goods Mary
bought yesterday including $1.00 I owed James Robey all makeing some $8.00 less

Rees on hand forenoon feeding & chruning & doing up chores for Mary_ Mike come
about 10 oclock to chop ground axes sharped croscut saw & put in ballance of day
below barn in corner of medow at two big trees Smilley cut down last spring_

purchase grate for Franklin stove was home in time to help me in with cattle at

Reese on hand at geese again hands to day A. Masters, H. Trusel Ed & Call
Joseph_ Theadore & J. West come on their Exprefs wagon here said they killed
40 geese & Ed 2 turkeys after night when all had went home_Joseph weighed the
13 baggs bran netted 632 lbs_
Bill Vermillion traded his Fill mare for Robert H. Smith prince horse with me by
my giving him cash to boot $15.00 and paid of horse shoes to drive on aid he
was satisfied when he traded he traded to stay traded in presence of M.B.
Fierbaugh and I said the same that when I traded I never went back if I lost the
beast or horse so we parted wishing each other good luck & Joseph & Theadore
took the mare to Leesburgh with them

Rees on hand after breakfast choping Edward & I took the poultry to the
station with oxen on sled 3 boxes & 2 lbs, when he come back he & Rees went to
haul oat straw from barn to stabel and his stable_ After dinner I went to
Leesville on Roberts fan mare to tell him I intended going to Cadiz next day or
part of the way, and to give the weight of thes two turkeys Ed dressed night
before after all left 30 lbs I left the bay mare & brought back the sorrell I
traded for day before it was night when I got back & Reese was down at Eds

Edward & Rees went to Leesville after breakfast for Reese to get goods to make
coat & pant with mules on little jumper of Theadores_ I by to fix to start to
Cadiz first went to Fierbaughs to get their road recp Mike brought them up_ I
started after 2 oclock & got to S. Adams stayed with him all night rode the new
mare she done well

After breakfast left S.Adams for Cadiz arived there 8+1/2 oclock put up with

Fierbaughs $35.47 gave check on First National Bank Cadiz for $75.36 then went
& gave Mr. Beeber the cash against it in bank_
Reese done little or nothing to day took his coat to Bet Longs to be made_ did
not help clean out cattles place at barn pretended to clean out the hog pen left
the door open and left the colts out, and the stable in bad order which I had to
turn to and bed & fix after I come home
Ed was out buying turkeys the afternoon so he said on Jack mule & I suppose
Reese rode Allick to Longs_ It was is dangerously icey on the rodes

feed shut. then they went to haul wood 2 loads for Ed & 1 for me_ I buisey all
day reding up & cleaning out stables & feeding after reese & Ed got done haul
wood he cut some for fire place fed cattle at barn sheld 1 1/2 bus corn & them
put out to spark up to Longs or some Where else
Ed took ear ake & went home sick_ It still remains cold & icey so much so I
have to carry water to horse in stable and kept so buisey I could not get time
to take Mike his tax recepts & change
Reese could not wait to milk cow for fear of breaking his appointment & she went

letter for Mike which Sarah gave me that he forgot_ I left his tax recpts with
Sarah & the $40.00 he gave me to pay his tax which was $35.50 cts which I
intend-Robe to charge him with on his wooll & credit me with_ I gave Edward
cash $5.00 to pay Browers on his work Edward is still sick_
I met Mansfield at store and had a talk with him he was trying to buy W & B
Laws wool he said he offered 60 cts but they was not willing to make as much
(resterchon)? as he wanted_ Rees went down to Mikes after his pants and borried
his gun for Christmas the Mules he brought up and haul 1 load wood in eve before
he took them home

At home all day feeding & buisey Old man Overholts & wife visiting at Edwards_
Mike & Sarah went to Ebon Lockrages to spend their Crstmas_ Reese went a
shooting after helping do some of the feeding and was rather poor help to day
not worth his bording
Burt Moore was here to see about making some ties and we went all round the
place looking at the timber it is still extremley cold & frostery dry_ The
pump gave out with Rees pumping in evening_

night I went down to Mikes to see him about butchering when I come back at 11

two chop loggs to build fire to butcher hoggs Ed giving out when they brought
them up on account of slush & rain he & I went after a load of old dry wood for
kindling_ concluded not to butcher hoggs_ Jim Overholt & Mike come & butchered
the steer in barn_ I cleaning out cattles sheep & colts places under which was
a big job for me, while they were dressing steer_

At home all day tend stock onley while I went to post office Talked a while

At home all day close feeding & clean stables Fixing latch on barn door Ed
come home from Leesville noon Young Lee here to look at sheep had supper &
horse feed but more on a spark Ed brought bad news about Joseph going to leave

Forenoon Ed & I took some crib to sheep house & fixed trofts for sheep Big
dinner at Mikes We all went & dined with them Theador family Lilley & Carry
thare also after dinner come up with Mother & Mandy stayed all night.

At home all day only while I went up to Fouts to see Joes horse After I went
to meeting Rev Stevens preached text Ocupy till I come Theadore and family
here Lilly & Carry also all went home after dinner.

Forenoon feeding shelling corn & Young Galliker come here looking to buy
weathers After dinner I went to J. Boulands & Leesburgh got 15 cts worth
writing paper & envelops paid for them rode coon mare did not get back till
after night verry muddy
Fouts & A. Jeffers here forenoon looking at timber to chop for saw Set to meet
them on next Saturday at 4 oclock pm at Fouts to see if we can deal Ian Little
here after night today said he would see us next Monday.

At home all day only while I went to town to take handle out of axe rained all
day Ed fixed under barn for gray mare I helping and feeding.
January 7
Wednesday
At home all day verry high water out all over the bottom The celler nearly a
foot deep all ovre the floor. After breakfast whin done feeding I went to get
Mike & Alick to help butcher the sow while Ed set pump in seller to get the
water our was at it by spells till dinner but hardley noticed what we got out
Then butchered the sow after done the feeding & took her to Lew Willet weighed
314 lb at 5 cts come to $15.70 H Weaver helped he come here before dinner
After night Ed went to post office recived letter for me from Robert about J.J.
Smith dispatching money to bring him home. Sow is Willot by Cash or pork on
Thursday 15th insl his own house after night $15.00 bring ballance due me yet
70/100.

At home all day tending to the stock triming the scubery and helping to pump
water out of the seller was at it half of the day H. Weaver & Edward at it
Weaver entitled to 1/2 day for helping butcher yesterday & to day helping pump
in seller I went down to post office got Advocate talked with Simmons & B.
Allbaugh about trading Gray Mare refered to pattent Allbaugh to trade for 2
year old filley- gave Ed cash 30 cts to pay Clendening for Oil Mother got of
him.

After breakfast Ed & I went to Jim Boulands from thare to Bowerston to see him
but no trade after I went to P. Conners not at home & no stock I would have-
home again 1/2 after 2 oclock at home bal of afternoon helping to see to the
stock shelled some corn H. Weaver here by five just before he started home
helped me shell 1 bus of corn

At home all day till after dinner I went up to Hiram Shults to see him about
the seed wheat I owed him come home by P. Allbaugh to see if he had any thing
to trade Mandy went home to day on the 11 oclock train I gave her cash on
going 50cts Mary said she gave her 30cts Edward gave her a R.R. ticket to
Bowerston 10cts.

I went to Leesburgh after feeding and cleaning up started about 11 oclock
dined with Robert was informed Joseph got home about 1 oclock last night away
8 days left at midle of night the Saturday previous- I brought Mandy home
behind (?nec ose) bay horse Dan Little here when we come home helping Edward
feed stock.

After dinner I went up to P Allbaugh to see Poland about a saw set Edward, Fred
& Mary went to Leesburgh Ed come home without Mary & Fred
After supper I took sugar & soda to Fierbaughs to pay him for their butter.

At home all day R. Law brought back turkey & took away his own- After dinner
Edward hauld one load wood to Mahula Smilley to be charged to Dan Little worth
$1.00 hauld 2 loads to Isaac
Masters to be payed in mill stuff- worth $2.00 before dinner after shiping
butter took grist to Masters Mill of 2 bus corn and 6 bus wheat Dan & I cut
hickory for sled soles after Dan went to cut load wood for Mahail only made
1/2 day.

To day I went to Bowerston to let Clarks know I could not contract with them
about the choping got dinner with J. Overholt (per?) walked didnt get back till
nearly night Dan not working to day only feeding for his board Mary got back
on noon train after night went down and received cash $15.00 of Lew Willet on
pork delivered to him on 7th (inst?)

At home all day helping tend stock very cold Ed & Dan fencing oat (slack?) &
hauld load gum wood after noon Dan went over to corn field to chop sugar tree
he felld & cut some last Tuesday Ed put soal on sled & brought gris Flower &

(complain?) of his hoggs

wet day particularly the after noon I hewed down mail handle Jesse Forscythe

A fine day would have done to plow Dan little choping a Maple tree in far
corner of corn suble Edward made & put up a sheep rack Mary & Sarah went to New
Market did not get back till after night I at home all day only went to
station with Mike to meet women folks rained a little while at station after
supper Mike & Sarah went home
I was over to Fierbaugh after cross cut saw which old M. Fierbaugh sharped &
Snary was reparing barn doors.

Fine day Ed took oxen over to sheep house Dan Ed & I over thare all day working
up old loggs into wood
In eve Theodor George Ourant & Weller Snee come up from Leesburgh to trade
horses Theador & George Ourant traded by Theadore giving cash to boot $25.00
got a comming four year old black mare for grey taking supper & feeing and all
left Theadore taking his mare away with him.

Cold and rainy Dan grubing & choping all day over below sheep house Ed hauld
two loads wood before dinner mules After dinner Ed went to Leesburgh on Alik
J. Browers come here while Ed was gone to Leesville to sit but had little
grounds to go on I promised to see him again.

After feeding showed Dan Little whare & what to chop cut down three trees & cut
up part of tops Ed hauling wood with mules & wagon I went to Leesburgh with
Dans boots to be 1/2 soaled nailed & sewed up sides dined with John Robey gave
order to Robert for mending boots paid it and bought nails laying out cash with
Robert $2.00 Dans bill for mending boots and pairs new socks $1.00 Rode bay
horse put him stable when I got home.

At home a wet day Mary went on train to see Carry _ I done little or nothing
but dress out a pair of soles for (jumper) & got Butcher to weld brace paid him
15 cts for welding it five cents too much Dan done working but help feed Ed
done nothing but feed also.

Edward went to Leesburg by wagon mules & oxen after load cole & telling him to
get order of Robert to get the cole got it at J. Reppeth? bank of Porter he
said 30 bushel at 6 cts = 1.80 home before dark just as I got back of Dan
Weyandt Mary got home just as I left for Leesvill after seeing Carry.

Dan choping wood all day below barn at old tree top I helping him part of the
time Mandy rode mare home to Hagerstown back early with Edward out all day
with mules and express gathering butter & eggs_ awful muddy roads

After morning feeding set Dan to grub up Elm tree in orchard which he was at all
day _ I mailed postal card to Book publisher Davenport Iowa dated yesterday_
After dinner soliced by Mr. Cassel of Zanesville to take him to Deersville which
I done with mules & old bay_ rodes most desperate Edward been out gathering up
butter I left here 2 minutes after 2 oclock arived Deersvill 5 oclock with no
intentions to return found it too bad and Mrs Cassel concluded to stay all
night Mike got oxen to take load hay to Bowerston

In Deersville this morning Received of Sister Sarah Simonton cash $100.00 one
hundred Dollar to be appropriated on a recpt I hold again her husband cauling
for $2000.00 which I gave her a Recept for_ After early breakfast left for home
with Mr. Cassell of Zanesville home before 11 oclock he paying me three & a
half dollars for taking to & from Deersvile_ Dan diging up elm tree in orchard
at it all day after dinner I rode Ike to Leesville and while there got Joseph
to cut my hair dark when I got back and Dan left for Sprags.

At home Dan choping fell a big tree in lower side of field in front of barn_
Edward got Mules shod all round 2 new shoes on Jack before & (6) removes bill
for shoeing $1.45 so said Edward After dinner he drove mules to express to
Leesburg Amen Hurless here for dinner and stayed 2 or 3 hours a kind of damp
chilly air all day.

At home forenoon went to Leesville after dinner Dan resting his sore hands I
bought him pant pattern triming lining & pr suspenders pant pattern lining &
trimings 2.50 suspenders .50 $3.00
I brought up the little black mare to keep a while_ Edward got the mules shod
with Butcher.

At home all day Dan Choping after done feeding below barn in old top and green
tree in lower side of clover field till feeding time Ed hauld up 3 loads wood
from big rock below barn after dinner took sled load hay chaff over on corner
of rye & brought back load wood_ Theofalis Smith here engaging in grafting_ I
went to Fierbaughs sawmill looking timber for Ox yokes and found it back then
to feeding.

he went to chop a while at elm tree in orchard tinkering at jumper soles till I
quit to go feed. Edward went to Leesville for load cole for blacksmith Butcher
delivered to Joseph Master said he hauld 25 bushels from J Prices bank_ quite
snowy afternoon

I am rather unwell with cold in my head not very cold thawing some in

little or nothing done to day

Forenoon Family went to Brethern chruch namely Mary Ed Fred Mandy & Dan Little
none of them back till 2 oclock_ I was out with Isaac Channals showing him what
to do in the way of makeing rails_ After dinner sent Dan out with him to saw off
two large rail cuts before his tending to the feeding _ Edward & I fixed up to
go to Cadiz to tend court got as far as J M Peck & stayed with him all night

Edward & I left J.M. Pecks this morning for Cadiz did not away thare till after
10 1/2 oclock our case did not come on that day on account of Moors being on
hand & lasted all that day got our dinner supper at the Swan house and lodged
then left our mules with McCormick at rate of 65 cts pr day

Morning at Swan house after breakfast went to court my case enter first and
took till noon to get done with witnesses Eslep made his first speech ajourned
& went to dinner_ After the pleading done jury went out about 3 oclock_ Ed & I
stayed till 4 pm they were not done then so we left for home and arived home
soon after 8 pm oclock all safe & sound_ Expenses as follows T Swans bill
$3.00 for 4 meals & 2 lodgings each_ McCormicks livery bill $1.75/100 for 2
mules 1 1/3 days

choping & sawing up tree top bal of day till feeding time Ed went to Leesburgh
express and mules not back till after night Channels went home about 4 oclock
so said Dan Little.

suit by J. Howards letter Channels did not get back till near 11 oclock I

drowned_ Ed Mandy Dan & Fred all went to Brethern Church None of them back for

Johnstons he was not at home met Willes Law thare & left there in company with
Samuel
Our seller full of water hardley know what to do with it the 3rd time this
winter.

A damp cloudy morning after feed commenced to pump water out to seller
concluded to quit it and dig a drain which dan was at most of the day after
Michal was here on his way to town I done but little my self only lay it off
for Dan & see some to the feeding ect etc_ I borrowed Joseph Peabody post

At home all day Dan diging drean from seller all day_ Edward haul 3 loads wood
from large tree top in lower side of field opposite of barn and took 6 bus of
wheat to Mill before dinner_ After dinner helping Dan in drean_
Channels come before dinner to go make rails done nothing before his dinner_
While at dinner Robert come to tell about his imbarisment and of his going to
Cadiz left for home about 4 oclock.

At home all day Channels split rails till dinner_ After feeding Ed & Dan went
to haul some dry wood for fire place haul 3 loads I out helping till dinner
after they hauld load hay over to sheep house then quit Channels went home not
working after dinner_ A snowey blustery day_ Mary went over to Michaels, not
home at 9 oclock stayed thare all night & next day till after dinner time when
Ed went after with jumper

At home all day only while I rode over to Mikes to see how the child was Dan
choping wood at house all the forenoon after dinner Ed htched up & hauld 2
loads wood from the Elm tree in orchard Dan & I choped a little while & then
they went to haul Manuer from stable door to let it open till feeding time

at line fence beyond elm_ James Sprown here for dinner cut up the tree and got

After feeding and cleaning myself up about 1/2 after 10 oclock I went to
Leesburgh dined with Robert_ After 3 oclock went to Dan Weyandts 1 pr short
Boots which he said was worth $5.00 not home till after dark spent in

Dan Little hauling dung most of day with mules to sled out on knubs on wheat
stuble some 6 loads Said Edward some unwell with boil on back of his neck

After breakfast I went to Leesville to have a talk with Robert about his
pecunary matters dined with him rode blake filley come home in
company with D. Shilts through Bowerston and home before night_ R.H. says
he is some cramped in other words hard up but think he can weather through
if his creditors dont push on him all at one time has plenty to meet his
liabilaties on the country but it is a little hard to collect now

on store to Robert for one dollar and 40 cts_ Dan was triming up in
orchard the old peach trees & some apple trees Edward help a little but

he measured my foot over and agreed to make me a pair of high shoes last of this
week not back till dark

Edward fixed up a place for little filley at barn I mending some gears
before dinner After dinner Ed & Dan went to plow Dan diging around &
up stump I got a couple of hand spikes and mend headstall of blindbridal
till feeding time_ After supper set a hen Youngsters went to prayer
meeting

Ed went to Leesville with oxen & mules for load cole took down a gag of
hay in & on bed of wagon brought back 25 bus cole which Robert got of Jim
Price cost two dollars away all day I hitched up Ike & Coon to
express and took Mandy along Dan choped down a tree joining Eds lot and
sawed one cut off of it and made a fens rail till afternoon did not amount
to much what he done

Mill_ After dinner Ed plowing & Dan & I choping & sawing at large tree in
lower side of field opposite barn_ At night I receaved a letter of J. N.

Mary and I went to Leesville today to get something for Sarah Mandy and
ourselves I got 2 matocks sharped & post diger welded Edward plowing
all day after we left Dan choping sawing and make a few rails down in
corner of field whare Ed was plow did not amount to much
Mary bought goods of Robert to amount of $2.37 for Mandy I had charged to
for (tallon?) & bal to Ed Benadinm 20 & 15 =35

At home all day forenoon sent postal card to Uhrichville and letter to
Cadiz to Hedge_ Set Dan to chop two Butter Nut trees in bottom
Edward hauld load wood to Mahala Smitly for Dan_ After dinner Ed yoked
oxen and hauld 5 butter nut loggs and 1 post logg to Fierbaugh saw Mill
cut down an Elm and it was hollow

1874 Tuesday
At home all day Dan choping up tree top on lower corner of plowed ground
after noon went to trim sugar tree that blew down_ Theodore come before dinner
and he & Ed went out to buy butter & eggs come back at night_ Michal
had oxen to help haul hay to Bowerstown_ Mary was at Mikes all day_
I was tinkering after noon at calfhouse door and other things

1874 Wednesday
At home till after 6 oclock in eveen whin I started for Uhrichville Dan
choping Oak tree down in corner of plowed ground nearly all day in evening
trimed a little in sugar tree before feeding the sheep_ Ed went to
Leesville in forenoon for Sarah Fierbaugh Dress afternoon haul stone for
drean off of plowed ground Michal Sarah & I left for Uhrichville 18 minutes
after 7pm They stayed with Wm. H. Smith I with bro John Fare I paid
45 cts in making change I gave Mike to pay hack man 15 cts

1874 Thursday
Mike & Sarah started West from Edgefield Tuscarawas Co at 4 1/2 oclock A.M.
I breakfast with bro John & loafed around till 10 oclock A.M. then up to Denason
till 12 oclock & 5 minutes home after 1 oclock P.M.
Dan & Ed fixing under barn all day_ I started for Leesville at 5 oclock
P.M. had a cold ride_ Heard a good lecture Farehome 45ct from
Denason paid Escles for pamplet at lecture 25 cts so goes the
morning

In Leesburgh at 9 oclock breakfast lodged with Theodore cold as any
time this winter
Started home before dinner on Coon mare Dan haul wood with oxen cart from
medow field opposite barn After early supper I went to Leesburgh hear more
lecture Took back two of the 3 coats I brought up to fit Dan $5.25 and
sent cross cut saw by Lee Dulley to get it sharped. I heard a
philosophical lecture slept at Theadores

In Leesburgh this morning breakfast with Theadore was rather a cold
night_ I bought 10 in file of J. J. to have David Newell to sharp
cross cut saw charged 40cts for sharping gave cash twenty and had credit
of two old file points for minding dined with Robert

Dulleys wagon come home Dan & Ed had been in corn stuble choping
sugar trees after supper Ed went to Leesville Jim Laney come here
paid out cash 75 cts for file saw sharp & candy for Freds fits 20 sharp
5 for candy & pea nuts Ed away sparking till middle of night

Mandy & I went to Leesburgh after breakfast to hear lecture on spiritulism
Mandy back before night I not back till 12 oclock at night Mary & Ed
home all day Dan running around to his kin & prayer meeting etc.

At home all day laying off lumber over near schoolhouse for Ed & Dan to
saw cut up all the down timber over thare done well while at it
Sold J Dunlap two red heffers for $45.00 Receaved $5.00 on them to bind
contract to be taken on next Tuesday 24th next I to help away with them_
Then went and bought old granny cow

At home all day Ed plowed till broke off by rain Dan yoked up oxen
to haul out some stumps after dinner sive some wheat & shell some corn
I mending some harness straps etc etc Dan & I counted the rails
Channels made 551 in corn field & 73 over river Dan says he helped to
split 200 besides helping saw for 150__ The granny heffer cow had a fine
calf down near Fierbaugh line fense Edward discovered her as he and Dan
was coming up from saw Mill Whare the had been helping roll up loggs

Mandy To 50 lb Flower 4 1/2
A kind of showery day Dan choping in corn stuble over beyond sheep house
all day only while feeding Edward plowing some Heram Crumley passing
& got dinner_ I went to Leesville after dinner taking Mrs. Barns 50 lb
Flower Bot lin seed & clover seed to amt of $3.50 23lb clover seed
at 8 1/2 = 192 23lb lin seed 162_ Little pale heffer had calf while
I was gone Dan carried it up to barn & he and Ed put them in front of

At home all day Ed plowing Dan yoke up oxen and went to haul out
some stumps before dinner after dinner he & I hauld up 2 loads stone to
gate going out in front of meeting house and helped him load most of 3rd load
when T.Smith Preston & young Newell come to graft said they put in 164 grafts at
3 cts each if all grows would come to 492 cts_ They stayed all night had
supper lodging breakfast two horses which caused me to turn out bay horse_
Hauled two load stone on road to S. Heastons order besides 3 to make walk across
Mandy had black mare out all till after 2 oclock she said to S. Shilts.

At home all day a fine day Ed plowing_ Smith Preston & Newell
by their teem while they went to graft for J. M. Holmes was not long doing
his job & left soon after breakfast
The cali cow had calf last night under barn though hurt some now seems to be
doing well_ Dan and I first after feeding hauled 1 load stone to fill wash
in lane then haul load wood to I. Masters before dinner after dinner hauld
another making 2 loads to pay on some Rye he is to grind for me forepart of next
week_ After gave Dan cash and he started off visiting little after 2

A cold raw day took the two young red cows to Dunlaps, dined with him Mary
& Fred in Bowerston tending organizeds on for Whiskey war_ Dan Little back
from J. Sprays again late dinner time split a few rails G. Husard then
helped me saw off two rail cuts and then feeding_ Ed plowing all day_

went in_ Recd of I. Masters this morning 7 bus Rye at 70 cts pr bus comes
to 4.90 paid for grinding 55 cts all equal $5.45 paid 3 loads wood &
cash $2.45 which closed

A cold frosty morning left M. McCoys after breakfast went and talked with
J. Coleman at steem Mill then to counsel with Easlep dined with Swan
bill .40 horse feed McCormick .20 Left for home after 2 oclock or
about sun down_ I. Channels here make rails I gave him cash on them

Mary & Fred just returned while I was at supper verry sick Dan haul
manure with oxen all day onley while feeding haul 6 loads Ed help saw 3
rail cuts for Channels

1874 Thursday
A fine mild morning after feeding Ed & Dan went to haul stack of oats &
hay I went to Leesburgh not back till night Ed & Dan commenced
fence up draft west of rye patch haul corn stones and some rails_
I promised to caul and see Channels but did not do it for want of money I
believe he was working at Crawfords North of Bowerston I got black mare
shod by S. Masters four removes cost 50 cts paid RHS cash for telling him
to pay Masters which was done before I left town

Fine dry moring
Ed & Dan went to finish fence at patch Rye and when done went at seller drain_
I started for Jerry Brown got dinner with him could trade onley
offered Bowers colt and the Niger Colt_ Next went to Franklin to see T.
Worstell then to Deersville at Simontons all night cold frosty night
