January 1 1875 Friday

            At home  after breakfast hitched mules to Exprefs  took Robert 1 1/2 bus potatoes  took old cart tire to get fender made for J Trip Paid Chapman 10 cts for makeing_ Robert at Uhrichville  Joseph & Lidey preparing to go there too, got 1 bus clover seed that I ordered Theadore to get of Perey which I bought of him on 12 December when Theadore was recevg hay of J Easterday for $5.00 telling him to pay Smith for it which he done  I brought it home stoping at W Laws to try to collect and deliver mesage J Curmblet sent to catch chicens

 

January 2 1875 Saturday

            At home  a Stormey day after 10 oclock I rode Coley to Leesburgh to dined with Robert he being at home  Took new note of Theadore Ransberger gething J Clark merchant on bal extending till 1rst June next 8 pr cent_ Recd of J Tripp on his note $804.05 the four dollars being off set on merchandise also a certificate of deposit on the Cumings & Couch bank Carlton for 103.00 home again dark

 

Jaunary 3 1875 Sunday

            At home all day did not eaven go to meeting  cold though fine overhead  wshed & greased horses legg before dinner  after dinner put a poultice of clay to it  at night all went to meeting but me and allone

 

January 4 1875 Monday

            Hard freese very Icey  I rode Colley to Leesburgh dined with Robert, tried to get Coley shod but could not  I receaved Draft on Philad Pa from R Berringer date 2nd inst cauling for $92.05/100 gave him note on J Robey Cooper mad last May 27th 74 caul for $90.00 seven monts inst on at 8 pr cent  4.20  He & Robert talking going to Bowerston  I got home again night  very slipery riding  Mrs Syres Fisher here for din & supper

 

January 5 1875 Tuesday

            At home forenoon took poultice off of horse  washed & greased him well after dinner went to Laws to collect they promised to pay me next Saturday night_ Stoped at office bought chain for lamp paid 10 cts  Recd an acpt from A Scott Scio in favor J&G Heck lock 17 wrote him acepting it  right after supper went to Mikes to see about his acpt he did not think he owed so much but would Saturday

 

January 6 1875 Wednesday

            Extreme hard freese & cold both pumps frose_ Bay horse sick all yesterday after noon & all day to day  Ed & I cut some wood forenoon  Mansfield up to see the horse & dined with us  supposed the chilling of the sore made the horse sick_ After dinner I wraped it up with clay & salt poultice which kept me till feeding time

 

January 7 1875 Thursday

            James Tripp paid bal on his note by Certiface on Harrison National Bank Cadiz  I gave Mary cash 50  paid cash to Tripp & Spence $1.32 and 10 cts to JJ for Tob in all $1.92/100  Tripps note $1423.76 by cash etc certifacate $907.08 leaving bal $516.68  Dineys Certifcate 560.80 bal du Tripp 44.15 to be paid tomarrow  Hitched to jumper Mary Fred & I went to Leesburgh got 8 removes toad on Mules Chapman & Martin charged $1.40 not paid

 

January 8 1875 Friday

            Cold hard freesing  a light snow  at home all forenoon tending stock & clean out stables after dinner I rode coley to Lees expecting to get her shod but could not  paid Tripp bal on certifacate and ome home again on before dark

 

January 9 1875 Saturday

            An extreme cold blustery day  too cold to be out, so I stayed at home all day  a while forenoon mending my suspender  bal of day tending stock & Edward fixing pumps to keep them from freesing at night  heard of Doctor McBane's death  turned out to be an awful cold night and for got to meet the Laws at station

 

January 10 1875 Sunday

            An extreme cold morning every th frose up, At home all fore noon feeding & cleaning up  after dinner I rode Jack Mule to Leesburgh to see if Robert had got home from Cleveland  he got home on friday evening  Theadore went to Steubenvill yesterday found a poor market and got a good freesing  Mike Fierbaugh was in Leesburgh yesterday to settle with Robert but did not do it

 

January 11 1875 Monday

            Hard freese last night makeing cold morning  I come to Leesburgh after breakfast bringing Nance to Theadore  then got four remove  two of them toad by Sim Martin  come to sixty cts entered on his note with 8 removes on 7th inst makeing in all $2.00  first before dinner I receaved $9.00 of Robert that Barrick got of J Penick started for home on Coley just at dark  brought remnant Michigan Casimer supposed 4 1/2 yds

 

January 12 1875 Tuesday

            More moderate this morning & calm  After Ed & family and Mary all started for Deersville with mules & bigg sled  Theadore gave me cash on his acpt of Asignee money $25 in 2 bills 20 & 5  Soon after started home_ I went to feeding which kept me till night doing Eds & my own  Wesley Mansfield cauld to look at sheep  David Shilts come after supper to see Mans

 

January 13 1875 Wednesday

            Quite moderate  thawing & soft  looking like rain  I at home all day feeding my own & Eds stock  N McLain brought home Eds jumper & harnefs  Mary & Ed got back about 4 oclock in eve_ Mandy & I alone all day till they come home, I busey all day feeding & choring_ said court was in session in the McCollough & Coultrip case  Shotwell & Luton there  I washed & greased horses legg sifted some clay but put none on

 

January 14 1875 Thursday

            Hard freese again  Edward & I cut wood forenoon  Sarah Fierbaugh here after dinner  I put poultice clay to horses legg  clean out stable etc  It is makeing a cold night

 

January 15 1875 Friday

            After getting chores done I went to Leesb  it was cold & frostey  got my dinner with Robert  Theadore was at Levittsville for prouduce  I bought 10 cts worth of Tob of Joseph  on my way home I receaved of Mrs Wm Law $5.00 dollars on his acpt then went to Bobs and recd 10 cts of him ballance of his acpt of N E Clendening $2.15 in all of Bobs $2.25  Edward feeding & choring around

 

January 16 1875 Saturday

            Hard freesing cold & frosty took clay poultice of of the horse then went to New Market  left pant pattern with Hines to make  brought some trimmings of GK Wait  left $5.50 with post master Stepenson that JM Holmes sent to professor Lee home again 2 oclock pm eat dinner & Robert & Theadore come  I washed sore on horse greased it & bound it up_ I paid cash to GK Wait 25 cts & Cash to Clendening for for tags on Republican 20- in all 45 cts  Ed hauling wood & hauld 1 load to Crawford

 

January 17 1875 Sunday

            A cold day freesing & cloudey all day  I at home all forenoon cleaning up and fixing to start to Leesburgh to get an earley start tomarrow for Carlton_ I got my supper and loged with Robert  I slept an hour down at Joseph before I went to bed

 

January 18 1875 Monday

            Up earley  a snowey morning  got started before 8 oclock_ I receaved of Theadore $150.00 in cash saying he owed including this cash receaved $194.00 leaving ballance $44.00 we arrive in Carrolton about 11 oclock and got to work after dinner stoping at the Van Horn house whare we stayed all night

 

January 19 1875 Tuesday

            Very cold  we had to leave soon after breakfast for want of not having the sale books of good sold previous to the sale to Tripp and some other papers  The bill at Van Horns $2.50 I believe was all the money laid out  I come strat home  Jesse Plowman here choping wood  Ed hauling some wood for himself  I paid Jes Plowman cash at Wilsons store for over hauls & socks $1.10 cash at house cash 40 cts in two bills 1 twenty five ctn bill & one 15 cts bill in all $1.50  Smith Donnel colrd come here with A west for dinner & Donnel stayed to work for his bord for a while

 

January 20 1875 Wednesday

            Very cold & frosty after breakfast and etc I made these entrys since sunday  Smith Donnel here chop wood & choreing round  Ed here feeding  After dinner I started for Leesburgh in bugey, Coley  Ed to Haveners to see about piggs  got none_ Ed & Smith put load straw in stable

 

January 21 1875 Thursday

            Left Leesburgh 7 oclock AM  in Carlton again 10 oclock busey all day paid cash to Clerk of Cort in case of Doc Stephenson (replurn?) note again Hunt $9.21 Cash to H Custer  $17.00 To Shobin & Railey  $110.00 cash tax to Treasurer  $37 cash to judge for avertising & stayed over night at Van Horns

 

January 22 1875 Friday

            Frose after the thaw in Carrolton  at Van Horns  his bill $2.75 left after 10 oclock AM & in Leesburgh again 2 ocl PM after getting some refreshment I come home  we drove Nance mare

 

January 23 1875 Saturday

            Frose again  hitched up Mules to Express took Mandy home & Smith Donnel to Leesburg to get his clothes  Edward took cattle to Laws scale to be weighed they weighed 3939 lbs good by Robert_ Smith back by 2 oclock  I brought Mandy with me  I gave her cash before her mothers doore $1.00 in fractional currency  I bought 10 cts worth smoking tobacco of JJ Smith

 

January 24 1875 Sunday

            Cold cloudy icey & cold  at home all day  washed and greased horse  After dinner I sent Ed to Leesburgh to learn when & how the boys got home from Carlton yesterday  Robert wrote me all right  Ed not back till near dark  Smith & I had all the feeding done when he returned & still verry cold

 

January 25 1875 Monday

            Very Icey & cold  Ed & Smith Don pound homany  I went over to see Mansfield_ After dinner Smith & I cut & saved some wood  cut up all the wood at the house again feeding time  Ed put in the after noon down at home, he saw Sam Long again about the piggs no chance of a deal

 

January 26 1875 Tuesday

            A little more moderate forenoon  dressing the horse_ Smith Donnel help  Ed down at his house all day onley while he was feeding _ They took grist to Mill 6 bus Wheat & 2 bus Rye, after dinner I gave Mary Cash to buy cant flannel & stock yarn $2.78 went to Leesville paid 75 cts for Tobacco to JJ Smith_ I home again  dark out  in cash to day $3.00

 

January 27 1875 Wednesday

            A fine mild morning forenoon dressing horse & makeing entries on Diary  Smith went to help Ed get some wood  took mules along after dinner I went to Leesville where I stayed all night, did not do any thing in the way of businefs on account of Barrick not being there

 

January 28 1875 Thursday

            Damp drisley fogey thawing day  or forenoon I in Leesville first thing qualified to to the bill Doc Sherrod disputed before Barrick  Then met in Hall to select jury in the Senft Case_  Then Smith come to exchange wagons  I got some 5 bus Rye & 13 lb hard (county?_) soap and come home I trough Bowerston

 

January 29 1875 Friday

            A snowey raw day  snowed consideralby in the afternoon  Smith haul wood  wood with mules to here  Ed along part of the time_ onley hwil he went to Harvey Hedges to to look for piggs_ I went to N. Market to see D Easterday and to get new suit clothes paid Hines cash for makeing $6.50 cash for thread 25 cts in all $6.75 then home again dinner  Smith hauld a load or two and then went to Mill for grist  I to wash & drefs the horse which kept me till nearley night

 

January 30 1875 Saturday

            Quite a little snow not bad sleding  I went to D Weyandts to get my short Boots (M very day?)_ Then to Leesburg  got dinner with Robert_ Bought Table Bed Steds & Chamber Sink of Lickner for $16.00 borrowed $15.00 of Robert which I paid next day  Then home on Coley Mare  Smith choping wood at house & feeding  Ed was staying to J McLains leaving his wife & Fred

 

January 31 1875 Sunday

            A fine snowey day  Robert and family here for dinner I gave him back his cash $15.00 I borrowed of him  yesterday  Mike & Sarah here for dinner all went away after  Smith verry attentive to feeding and tending fire  does well so far  David Shilts here to night with Mandy sitting up in parlor with a good fire in grate
