The Diary

July 1 1874 Wednesday

            First thing Hen Weaver & Ed took reaper off of wagon  then Ed to Feed mules  I took dose salts before breakfast  after Mike & Jacob come  fixed up and commenced the wheat_  Old Daniel come between 10 & 11 oclock which made things move better  Theadore come after we eat dinner  helped till night & stayed all night  took them tight husling to get done  Our Mules done the reaping_  I at home all day  carried water as well as I could

 

July 2 1874 Thursday

            Warm & dry  Mike here earley to grind Machine Knife before breakfast  as soon as breakfast over all hands left to go cut Mikes & Dans wheat  Ed & Hen Weaver from here all day  I still unwell  takeing salts  old Ivan Weaver here after his axe_  After din I under took to hitch up Coom Mare to Eds bugy to go to Leesburgh but she acted unpleasantley & I took her out and hitched up Rone went & back after 3 oclock_  but nothing new with Robert

 

July 3 1874 Friday

            Edward & Henry at Fierbaughs all day  finished their wheat after breakfast I went to see old Weaver but gone away_  Rode Coon Mare to Leesburgh after dinner  back again supper  bought 2 lb crackers & 2 lb Cheese of Joseph  no news of Robert-  First as I got home Mr. J.M. Holmes come in and lifted his note with $10.25/100 before sat to super

 

July 4 1874 Saturday

            Alarmingly dry  Ed went to mow in school house field  I went to Fierbaugh after cradel for H. Weaver while he cut stove wood to clean up strip in wheat & cut rye_  then went after old Weaver to help bind & rake  finished Rye before dinner & It got so windy in afternoon we could do no good rakeing or work working with hay so they quit and went to haul in wheat  Old man Weaver with us all day Hen went home at night_  Had thunder lightening and a very light shower of rain at sundown

 

July 5 1874 Sunday

            After breakfast over Mandy rode off with D. Shilts to Brothering meeting north of tunnell  next went Mary Ed & Fred  leaving me here to spend the day by my self  which has been verey lonesome till after 3 oclock and dont know how much longer it will ramain so

 

July 6 1874 Monday

            Sultry warm & dry  Ed went to mowing over in field below school house field untill I told him to quit  it not being worth mowing  cut a little joining the stable  H. Weaver & I rakeing over by school house_  I come to Leesville after noon & Ed & Hen went to gather & haul in Hay bal of after noon  I receaved my wool money of Sponer onley paid me for 684 lb shrinking one 11 lbs  The wool weighing 695 lbs  gave me cash $328.30/100  I took 70 cts out of assinee money to give spence in change

 

July 7 1874 Tuesday

            Ed went to mow for Weaver (big?) days mowing  Hen & I hauled in two loads wheat fore noon  after noon Hen took Coon Mare and Horse Rake to his Fathers  Raked all after noon  did not get done

 

July 8 1874 Wednesday

            Hen Weaver & Coon Mare & Ed and mules & low wagon at Weaver all day_  Robert and Mr S.I. Bellows come up in after noon for his money  Mr B. staying all night  Robert going home with his children late in evening  Forenoon I was round among stock & afternoon mend some bridals

 

July 9 1874 Thursday

            Still warm & dry  Ed mowing all day in field joining stable got done  Hen Weaver his Father & I haul in wheat got done  Old man Raked some in hay afternoon  Hen with horse late_  Found old granney cow with fine calf this morning must have been a day old  A slight shower rain in eve  made old man Weaver sick so he went home  I over to set up Rye shock

 

July 10 1874 Friday

            Mary Fred & I went to Leesville soon after breakfast  Hen Weaver to rakeing hay with Coon Mare  he and Ed put up all the hay they had cut with assistance of old man Weaver  after dinner RH and Family come up to Mikes after curants late in evening_  I got shirt in store of Sam Johnson colerd blacksmith cost $18.00 pr Doz say worth to me $1.75  Looking like rain  Edward & Hen got every thing in  the 17 doz rye last

 

July 11 1874 Saturday

            A wet morning  Hen Weaver went away after breakfast  I took blackSmith his shirt_  It kept on raining till 1/2 after 10 oclock  when I started to Leesburgh on Coon Mare  remaining thare till after 5 oclock-  some little trading done by J. May  J. Boyd & other during after noon

 

July 12 1874 Sunday

            A wet morning  slept late  showery up to 11 oclock when Mandy rode coon Mare off homewards when I got to makeing some entries on Diary  Edward to Leesburgh after noon  I rode Jack mule out over farm _  When I got back Sarah was thare & Mandy had returned_  Edward rode roan mare

 

July 13 1874 Monday

            A fine morning after the rain-  Edward went to mowing in orchard  I to Leesville on rone mare  Hen Weaver did not get back till after dinner then went to work in hay orchard_  I back on roan horse late in eve  Ed not quite done mowing orchard

 

July 14 1874 Tuesday

            Fine morning  after breakfast went to settle with Mrs. G. W. Adams  done nothing with her_  After brought grist wheat up from Mill on Ike  had to make two trips_  bal of time till dinner fin carriage to go to Deersville  Mary & Fred away again two oclock trying to collect on the way _  Edward & Henry working at hay in Orchard  did not get done  onley hauld in 3 loads_  drove Coon mare & Prince  in Deersville all night

 

July 15 1874 Wednesday

            Warm & dry in Deersville  after breakfast Recd of Sarah Simonton cash on carpet chain $3.8 which I recept for in full also on- ballance on old recept made in Cadiz October 15th 1870 cash for $2000.00 $91.00 in full which settles it  Recpt in full given on statement rendered in full to this date_  Hen Weaver & Edward Killed sheep this morning and finished put up hay in Orchard  after noon went to plow corn & Ed the Potatoes in outs  after coming home I went to Habeners  Old Man Weaver here to see about getting corn plowed

 

July 16 1874 Thursday

            Had a nice shower rain last night  Ed and Hen went to plow corn over creek  I fixing up to come to Leesburgh  brought Mandy as far as Hagerstown leting her have Flower for her Mother fifty lbs and cash in her mothers house $2.00  Hen Weaver & Edward went to plow his fathers corn after an earley dinner with 2 mules and shovel plows  some 4 acres  Kept them till night  Hen To 1 large plug Cab Tobacco 60 cts  I receaved cash for Robert of Johel Cramblit by hand of his son on a note given to Ben Johnston $17.89 & inst to ampt of $18.60/1000 a $20.00 bill which I gave to Robert

 

July 17 1874 Friday

            Warm & dry  after starting Ed & Henry to haul old meeting house loggs from M. Gundey I went to Leesburgh in bug with Coley expecting to get Lever for wagon lock but missed it  done nothing in store on acpts_  I got 1 bus corn of Theadore and stade home  boys onley hauled two load each of the loggs  had J. Holmes wagon I did not pay Theadore for corn_ A summons served on Rob in the Bates case_ I bought 1 pr cot socks & suspenders of Joseph paid him for them 60 cts

 

July 18 1874 Saturday

            Ed & Hen started to haul more loggs from Gundey  onley hauled 2 loads each & quite_  I went to Leesv to day again  rode Coley went & come trough Bowerston  A dull day in Leesburgh especially with Robert  Joseph talked of going to Deersv on visit this evening after 6 oclock

 

July 19 1874 Sunday

            Warm & dry  after breakfast around among the stock salting them and viewing things generly  bal of day about the house  Mandy away all day  Mary & Edward went to afternoon meeting  I stayed at home expecting Joseph & family to call on their return from Deersville but did not come

 

July 20 1874 Monday

            Warm & dry  Henry did not come till late after 8 oclock on account of cradling oats at home for his father_  after coming set in to craedling in field back of Squire Johnson_  Edward binding after dinner  I come to Leesburgh before dinner  went to G. Easterday following him to his bro Johns  had a slight shower rain Robert went away down the creek  I left Theadore minding store & come up home earley before supper

 

July 21 1874 Tuesday

            Looking rainey like  Hen and Ed went to how potatoes  I went up to Isaiah Englishes after umbrella  tinkered about home bal of day  cut thistles & mending collars & other strapes  Henry broke the cradle scythe (gromd?)it up and cradled bal of day   Edward tying  Mandy & Mary over at Sarah most of afternoon  Henry went away when he quit cradling

 

July 22 1874 Wednesday

            Coolish looking dry  I caut 4 chicken's and started for Leesburgh in  bug & black mar  Ed binding Oats no Henry on hand at 9 oclock when I left  was hom cradeling their Oats and I know was not on hand as soon as he said. come home from town before supper_ Theadore went to Leesville for butter & eggs  Henry cradling Oats on Corn stuble onley 3/4 of day

 

July 23 Thursday 1874

            At home all day  warm & dry  Edward & Henry hauling in oats till dinner when Henry went to cradling Oats done again 1/2 after 4 oclock stopped at 5 and went to New Market to the show  I helped Ed to haul in & load oats after dinner which finish that field forenoon  I was grubing Elders in calf lot  Turned most of cattle on Oat stuble joining Phillips & Johnstons lots

 

July 24 Friday 1874

            At home all day  Edward & Henry  binding oats  done again supper & after hauld in two loads-  I sold 30 sheep to two of the Berney (Hugh Berneys sons on Plum Run) for 3 1/2 cts pr lb to be waighed on Wm Laws scale on next Wednesday at farthest_ they are picked out and marked and I receaved $5.00 five dollars on them-  Had a fine rain after 9 oclock and considerable of Oats down in the sheaf over on field beyond cove and old sheep house

 

July 25 Saturday 1874

            Every thing wet after a fine rain last night  After grinding bryer scythes  Henry went to cutting off elders over place with no judgement eaven away up at Mikes bridge till noon_  Ed putting piggs in oat stuble_  I went to Walkers to punch breast strap  Then to Leesburgh met Sholwell of Carroll looking for sheep  told to come and get his dinner and horse fed look at sheep and I would be back met him at station  sold him 60 of top of sheep at $2.05 pr head to not be kept longer than next friday morning at outside  Recd nothing on them_ Took Mandy part way home rained a little_ Ed & Henry finished haul in oats from corn stuble field

 

July 26 Sunday 1874

            A fine growing morning  after breakf I went over to Mikes a little while  Ed & Fred went to Leesburgh  lonesome forenoon here_ Sarah come before dinner  Robert & his family drove up in Princes large hack & all stayed till near 6 oclock  went to bed earley and soon after we had a tremendous storm thundered and lightened tremendous  Robert barely getting home before it came on

 

July 27 Monday 1874

            Looking quite wettish  Henry on hand after breakfast ground the axe then we went down and mowed draft in calf lot, which took Henry till near dinner when Theadore come for some sheaf oats bringing some 300 lb ham_ Rob Carter here for dinner Hamilton Berney D. after dinner I went to show Henry where to chop come back fixed up and went to Leesburgh after supper not getting there till near dark

 

July 28 Tuesday 1874

            A cloudy morning in Leesburgh left after dinner for Plowmans to leave S Hurless note for collection then home_  Berneys had been here took their 30 sheep weighing 2512 lbs eaqu 85 lb per head on W Laws scale  Ed paying the weighing 25 cts I receaved from Mary $87.65/100_  Henry picking blackberys all day onley while helping with sheep  Edward & Mandy out a while also for blackbery's_ I left after supper for Leesburgh Henry had not returned when I left_ Recd Cash of Robert before going to bed $175.00 of asinee money

 

July 29 Wednesday 1874

            A fine morning Robert & I started for Carlton at 9 oclock Prince & bugey missed seeing our counsil an idle trip  Theadore tending store and packing his eggs_ before started I bot 1 pr of suspenders of auction man paid him cash 25 cts for them_ did not be on any expe in Carlton to day for din or horse feed taking our lunch & feed with us  home to Leesburgh before 6 1/2 oclock in eve  I bought 1 pr suspenders of young Mr Summerville at auction room for 25 cts which were good, I think Ed and Henry was hauling home loggs for Gundey all day

 

July 30 Thursday 1874

            A fine dry morning after breakfast went to auction room and bought some 29 1/2 yds Callico & 3 prs suspenders all for cash $3.25 got 1 twist tobaco for Mary & started home mett Shotwell at Hagerston about the sheep  Met Mansfield at station and talked about sheep & wool then home  Frank Smith thare to see about their wool  I think I affected a sale for him  Ed & Henry finished haul loggs and Hen went to help Mike to in with his oats all the after noon  I looking round corn & stock  Ed pick black berrys all after noon_ James Shotwell of Carlton come at dark for the sheep

 

July 31 Friday 1874

            up early sent Henry & Ed after sheep  picked them out before breakfast  52 of them for $105.00  Shotwell crawfishing from first contract  Edward helping to Bowerston  Henry went to grubing elders  I done up chors and then went to help till dinner  after 2 oclock come to Leesville  on my arival got another abasing from Z Courtright of Franklin  had an inter view with Dee Stephenson & R H about there matter when they made arangements to go to Carrolton to morrow_ Henry put in the bal of afternoon grubing & choping
