The Diary           

June 1 1875 Tuesday

            I went to Gundey place after steer and bought  Mrs Gundey of Martin for $21.00  paid him & boys helped me home with the two steers  the costing $41.00_ John went to work for Som  there all day_ Ed haul some manure rails & stone for bal of fence at school house_ I put in after noon grubing & triming apple trees  come a fine rain late in evening  Mary & John set out a few cabbage plants

 

June 2 1875 Wednesday

            Wettish morning  John went to work for Mike  Ed took mules & plow to help in their new ground  both away all day_ I choring around all forenoon after noon I went to look for cabage plants did not get till I went to D Sniders she gave me a lot_FT Simonton here when I come back for supper on his way to Leesville in search of a bugey could not find any to please him

 

June 3 1875 Thursday

            Wettish looking  had a nice rain last night_ John & Edward went to help Fierbaughs plant corn  at it all day_ Mary & I hitched up Mules to exprefs & went to Leesville takeing Rachel her carpet bring Willit his pay_ I paid out Cash for oat meal & candy 15 for nails 10

 

June 4 1875 Friday

            Fine & dry looking  John & I went to school house to rest fence  Ed went to work on roads_ Back after dinner and helped John finish fence  he being at it all day_ I made chicken rack after dinner and late in evening I hitched up to haul load stakes out of bottom which finished the day

 

June 5 1875 Saturday

            Wettish day John replanting corn between showers forenoon  Ed Help him  at it all day  got all the east side done_ after dinner I went to Leesville on Exprefs takeing Ellon to Hagerstown  we went by D Sams  I paying him 50 cts for quart fish oil  I also got 1 qt flax & crude for 20 cts_ I receaved the acpt from S Easterday $6.25 which was again his Father deceased  come home bring Ellon

 

June 6 1875 Sunday

            At home all day  salt cattle & sheep after breakfast then shaved & cleaned up before dinner_ Theadore & family come about 12 oclock when it began to rain & held on till next morning  raining a great deal  but moderate preventing Theadore from going home

 

June 7 1875 Monday

            Wettish morning after so constant a rain Theadore & family started to Englishes  John cut stove wood  hauled bedding to stable  trim apple tree & grub elders at Edwards till dinner_ After dinner he & Ed went to plant corn_

            I went to Leesville to see about Ray Cafsners boy but had hired for 1/2 a month_ quite a shower while I was there  cleared off to not wet me coming home

 

June 8 1875 Tuesday

            A fine foggey morning  John McCourt working with Edward all day triming Apple trees_ Mary Fred & I went to Carlton to see Shober & Railey & Judge McCoy on Asignee buisinefs  out cash 90 cts  advised to resign and look up a successor  back home a little after 6 oclock  drove mules to carriage

 

June 9 1875 Wednesday

            Fine day  John working forepart of day for Ed at his lot cleaning off bursh briers & elders  after part haul rails & stone to fix line fence  between Fierbaugh & us_ I took grist corn to Mill and went to Leesville  dined with R.H. after I lent Theadore cash $50.00 promised to pay back on Saturday next_ After coming together made choice of Wm Crimm  I went to Perryville then to Scio & home before dark meeting Doc Nixon at Mansfield lectionering

 

June 10 1875 Thursday

            Fine day  John & Ed working corn  mules harrow & cultavator_ I come to Leesville dined with Joseph after went to Barris Sheridsville paid costs to get judgement as pr recept $14.65 WD Shearer $18.30 Sop Crawford $12.30 PC Parker $9.45 make after costs $34.90 come back got 18 Turkey Eggs of Theadore & home

 

June 11 1875 Friday

            Warm & fine  John & Ed went work corn as yesterday  I to Leesville trough Bowerston  Robert & I got at looking on assignee acpt close at it all day he looking over recepts counting up what ampt I drew out of bank & payed out  I dined suped & slept with him

 

June 12 1875 Saturday

            Warm & fine  John & Ed went to corn  Ed quit at dinner & John finished (frrtly?)  John McCourt To Cash to buy hat $3.00  up earley  went to JC Plowman before breakfast & got it of him  Recd following acpt HW Chaney $13.72  Kale McCullough $8.70  John P Chaney 33.57  old Robert Berney 1.60 = $57.59  James Porters onley part paid two dollars I believe and costs on 1.90 presumed to be doubtful  Ensek Parker an account doubtful also so says JP Plowman  no acknow for_ J Boreland By 2 new shoes before 65 & two removes behind 25 cts = 90 cts on the Coley mare to be entered on his note  John McCourt to Cash to buy hat $3.00

 

June 13 1875 Sunday

            Quite cool this morning for the time year  At home all day  Salt Cattle in forenoon & Sheep late in eveing_ I spent a little while at Mikes forenoon  he not Thare  come back & rode over to look at corn stub before dinner  Robert H & family come & stayed till after 5 oclock  no one else here to day but Ed & wife spent a while looking over Bank Book & some other paper before supper_ Intending to go to Carrolton tomarrow_ I gave John McCourt cash last evening $3.00 to buy hat

 

June 14 1875 Monday

            Fine morning  up 1/2 after 4 oclock  John & Mike & Ed fixing to shear sheep  I come to Leesvill & Carlton  In before 2 oclock  stoped with McGuier  got 2 din & horsefeed  Had to loose $28.81 on acpt of not putting Joseph note to J Spence his assignee  Did not get trough makeing out last report to resign_  Stayed at McGuiers all night_ after coming home learned the boys did not get done shearing till noon next day_ Dan Fierbaugh altered the lambs  Ed said thare was 35 of them in all.

 

June 15 1875 Tuesday

            In Carlton at McGuires  bill $4.00 for 3 meals lodging & mare_ Finished make out report for to offer resignation and appoint Wm Crim My Successor  ready to leave at 11 oclock  paid costs to clerk Taylor $10.61  To Raley $75.00 to JL Rue $25.00 to judge McCoy $7.20 in all $121.82 O Jerrico full of theives & where how emphaticlly true  Back to Leesville 2 1/2 oclock  refreshed & home 5 1/2 oclock_

            John & Ed finished shearing again 11 oclock & John went to help Mike bal of day  Ed reding up & choring for himself_ Theadore here for load hay  got a prety good one_ A fine rain in latter part of night_ Robert starts soon after I left to sell goods West RailR

 

June 16 1875 Wednesday

            John McCourt went to help Mike finish shearing  away 3/4 day  ballance plowing patch back of garden & help Ed chore who was at home all day done his cain & fix his house_ Mary & I went to Leesvill_ J Moreland by 2 new sh on Nance 65  Bot of JJ Smith not paid for  groceries for Mrs Barns $1.50 on Ellons acpt as near as I can guefs 2.40 & spilt molasses  come home & lost my specks_ I gave Mary $1.25 to pay for Drefs

 

June 17 1875 Thursday

               Fine morning  John & Ed started to work corn 2:40 time  I Entering acpt in Diary forenoon (on this Diary) went down to post office immediately after dinner to met Fred & sauntered a while with him and went out to look at wheat & cut some Rye out of it  done but little  bal of afternoon salted the young catle cut some of the green Rye for to mix for Nance & Coley  rained a small shower not not more than a good due

 

June 18 1875 Friday

            Fine morning  John & Ed working corn all day  after breakfast I went over to Mikes to see if any one going to Cadiz  come back and greased horses legg  Chored around & went down to station to enquire about the mail_ After dinner rode out to see boys work corn and look round, back wrote letter inclosing check to mail tomarrown to H L Thompson for tax $62.00 for Fierbaugh ourselves

 

June 19 1875 Saturday

            Fine day  John McCourt & Ed working corn and the potatoes agoining  finish the corn for the second time  at it all day_ I at home  mailed a letter to H L Thompson containing check on First N B dated 21 inst for 62.00 _ after din hitched to cariage brought Sarah up to spend after noon with her mother and took her home again after supper about all that I done

 

June 20 1875 Sunday

            Warm & dry  Slept late  Mary & I went to Scio to hear Dempsey preach  disapointed  home little after 1 oclock  got our own diner  John having dined with Edward & Ellen away visiting her sister Mandy Shits  not back till we had gone to bed  I paid Wilson 15 cts yesterday to pay for wool twine & ballance on nails as I understood

 

June 21 1875 Monday

            A fine warm day.  John Ed and myself working in bottom reding of the willow thicket to put in foder corn  got it plowed and harrowed but none planted  Robert Theadore and children here for dinner and Robert fitted up and took Nance mare to travel and try to sell goods from sample  started about 2 oclock_ I gave Mary 10 cents for something_ got word to meet Wm Crumm at Carrolton to marrow  the first I heard of it

 

June 22 1875 Tuesday

            Had a fine rain last night and this forenoon  After breakfast I started for Carlton  rained on me 2/3 of the way there  again 11 oclock met Wm Crim  probated my ag presented it to him & regected it imployed J L Rue to draw up a petion to pray to the Judge of Court of Common Plea to acpt  handed over Notes Due bill acpts & justices recepts & come home  John Drilling corn & haul wood  Ed with him part of forenoon

 

June 23 1875 Wednesday

            I at home all day with John who was spading in garden  plant cabage & beats  grub Cherry trees trim apple tree & haul brush away & chore about_ Edward & family  Mary & Ellon all went to Scio Commencement  Theadore family & Clide cauld on his way home & got supper  I worked hard

 

June 24 1875 Thursday

            Fine warm morning  John went to repair fence  between Fierbaugh & us  Ed not recovered yet  I preparing to go to Deersville to get Mrs Colwels recpt for her devidend cauling for $63.12 not yet paid which I had to give her my voucher for  I Kept a coppey of  not home till after night  Edward got his old pump pulled out of his well in eve  had some of the neighbors help him

 

June 25 1875 Friday

            Fine rain last night  John went work at fence to day again  at it till midle of after noon when he come to help Ed at his cain patch  Edward fixing his well  I got him bucket out of Roberts celler geting Sim Martin to put bail on it for 15 cts to credit on his note  I went to Leesville with ellon to get her some goods  amounting to over four dollars  got for ourselves our fall syrup and 1/2 lb Rezin  Mr Barns & daughter Mary here on visit_ I did not pay Joseph for any thing I got of him to day

 

June 26 1875 Saturday

            Very warm  John helping Ed finish his cane  repair gate opasite meeting house & work patch beyond garden and in garden  I wrote letter to Stark & Forney Steubenville  William Crim here looking over acpt and wanting ballance of money in my hands as assignee which I had not on hands to give him telling me Railey told him there was yet remaining with me $3157.35 also stating he receaved judgements notes due bal & acpts to ampt of $1378 93 $4536 26 to be looked over on my recpt from him

 

June 27 1875 Sunday

            Quite seasonable  part of the folks went to sabath school forenoon and after_ I at home till 3 oclock  started for Cadiz  got to McPeaks wher I stayed all night  Coley & Eds Bugey_ Ed drove Mules to Gutshalls forenoon to McClain  in after noon

 

June 28 1875 Monday

            I at John McPecks this morning  after breakfast I went to Cadiz  lift tax recpts of H L Thompson by paying bal of 17 cts over check of $62.00 sent on 19 th inst as follows  Eds            $5.17

 Home trough Scio to look   2.80

for Double shovel moulds  got none_ John work corn all day  Ed doing something for him self as I was informed

 

June 29 1875 Tuesday

            Up earley and went to perryville before breakfast  gave Wm Crem cash $400.00  Recpt for on his recpts sheet for notes Due bills & accounts  got my breakfast with him  come home made sunday Monday & to days Entries on this Diary_ John Wrok corn_ Mary & I went to Leesville gave Joseph order to pay Grant Clark $2.00 for new riming fore whel of Exprefs wagon  gave Mary Cash $25 cts cash fo Tobaco 20 Reed here soon after we come home

 

June 30 1875 Wednesday

            Fine day  Reed agent of Champleon  were here over night 1 horse  John wor corn all day  Ed Choren aroun all fore noon  Ed fixing his alley all day  I went to Leesvill in after noon to see if I could find any (stubs?) to make shovels for double shovel plow could find none  rode Coley went & come trough Bowerstown  fell in with J Dunlap  looking at his cattle_ Laid out cash yesterday with Mary & my self 45 cts look back to 29th inst
