The Diary

March 1 1875 Monday

            Rainey thawey morning  At home all day  done but little  mended the mule bridals & tending stock  clean out stable or helped  Snow nearley all gone again night  Ed pounded some homany for himself & us_ Mary & Mandey went to sit a while with Marsha J Simkins, after they come home it thundered & lightened and rained verry hard for a while then turned in & frose hard

 

March 2 1875 Tuesday

            Cold frose hard anough to bear a horse in most places  verry high water all over the bottom  I went to Leesburgh on Coley trough Bowerston to shun high water_ Bought 1 1/2 yd oil cloth of LM Barrick for $1.30 gave him recpt for to take out of funds collect when we settle  home before dark  striped horses legg

 

March 3 1875 Wednesday

            A stormey snowey day  feeding & choring forenoon  After dinner Robert and I started for Carlton 1/2 after 2 oclock pm  got to Sylvester Tripps before dark  stayed with him all night_ Left after breakfast for town_ Fell into investigation with Railey soon after arriving, after 1 P.M  my claim objected to by H Eckley & O P. Taylor and drawn from Judge McCoy passing on it, requiring me to get petition drawn to prepare for 21st April term_ Dinner & horse feed at Van Horns $1.25 for R H & I Back to Leesville again dark  suped & breakfast with R H  lodged JJ.S

 

March 4 1875 Thursday

            Still cold & stormey_In Carrolton 9 1/2 oclock_ Fell into investigation with Rail soon after arriving_After 1 oclock PM my claim objected to by H Eckley & O.P. Taylor of New Philadelphia and drawn from Judge McCoys passing on it_Requiring me to get petition drawn to prepare for 26th April term next

            Dinner & 2 horse feeds at Van Horns $1.25 for RH & myself_Left for Leesville 3 1/2 oclock pm  there soon after dark_ supper & breakfasted with RH & lodged with JJ.S  part of this entered on yesterdays date  Instructed to be in Leesville 10 1/2 oclock Saturday to get petition executed

 

March 5 1875 Friday

            More moderate this morning  L.M. Barrick told me he mailed the Senft Suit transcript to Shober & Railey yesterday so after breakfast a while I left for home  Theo soon following me for his mother to go see his sick child who started soon after din  after pulling a few sheaf oats in his wagon

 

March 6 1875 Saturday

            Mudy & slushey_after 10 I went to Leesburgh  found all well  Chailey recovering fast_ Received letter from Joseph L Rue stating he could not get the petion ready for todays mail  would send on tuesday _ I advanced $20.00 to Theadore to buy seed oats  I also loaned Joseph $100.00 one hundred dollars for which I took his note signed EL & him on demand_ Then come home

 

March 7 1875 Sunday

            At home all day terrible snow continued to midle night

 

March 8 1875 Monday

            Quite a deep snow began on Saturday night & contineaued till midle of Sunday night makeing about 10 in deep  more moderate this morning_ After 9 oclock I went to Carrolton  arived before 1 oclock got dinner & fed at Van Horns  paid 50 cts  did not get ready to leave till 4 oclock  signed the petition I made affidavett to and also to the transcrip in the Senft case_ This petition I made affidavit to is praying to the court to not allow this requsition to disalow my claim_ Ed & family here most of the day and Robert brought his mother home 

 

March 9 1875 Tuesday

            After feeding Ed hitched up mules took his mother to Mikes then he & his family went to Cutshals_ I went to Leesburgh  looked over statute at Isaac Prices  dined at Roberts who reaceaved his Dry goods samples to day  I wrote letter to Joseph L Rue and inquired into some matters & come home by Hagerstown meeting Theadore going and coming after getting his load of chaff and kind a promised him I would try to get up the oats tomarrow

 

March 10 1875 Wednesday

            At home considerable snow on ground but thawing  I busey feeding  cut wood  hauld up box chaff till feeding time  Edward sick all day which made me more to do

 

March 11 1875 Thursday

            After feeding I went to Leesburgh  after 10 oclock Edward went to Leesburgh for seed oats  got 41 bus  Theadore giving envelop with calculations on  I dined with Joseph  paid Frank Dempster $25.25 & paid Joseph for Mrs Dean $200.00  come home leaving Joseph to get M Dean to sign recpt

 

March 12 1875 Friday

            Forenoon washing & putting clay to horse  after 2 oclock I left for John Adams  Stayed thare all night  he not at home  got there before night  bad roads  rode Nance_ Theadore sold beck mare for $112.50 so he said and bot a little bay horse of J Forbes

 

March 13 1875 Saturday

            After breakfast left John Adams for Cadiz  first went to bank  got change for a five hundred dollar bill  Then drew $1000.00/100 (Before?) entering it on Bank Book_ Then went into Court house a little while, then to see Judge Lemmon, then started for home  come to J McPecks for dinner & mare fed  home before 5 oclock bad roads one (lane?)

 

March 14 1875 Sunday

            After breakfast washed & greased the horse legg  Then I went to Leesburgh  dined with Robert whom got home yesterday eve from selling goods  after dinner he gave me $170.00 on the Abe Baker note  I then come home  rode Coley  Theadore sold Beck & another horse

 

March 15 1875 Monday

            Bad rodes  after I done the feeding went to Leesville  stoped at Joseph  put Coley in his stable  dined with Robert  paid James Robey & Chapman  looked over sales of stock of goods till near night  brought home old list of sales and the old invoice made out by praisers  settled with LM Barrick & got what money he collected

 

March 16 1875 Tuesday

            Frose some last night  that dried up the roads some  rod Coley to Leesville  got there before Joseph sat down to dinner  after regulating Barricks Recpts he gave me on notes & acpts to collect them looking over the Due bills & notes  bot envelops  1 comb of Joseph 15 cts  lent cash to Theadore $20.00 (crossed through)

for a few days_ returned on saturday 20th inst in his home after return from Pittsburgh

 

March 17 1875 Wednesday

            Frose hard last night  At home all day feeding & cut wood & choring around  young Singhorse her for breakfast & to hire but could not agree_ wrote a letter to JT Campbell of Steubenville inclosing a recept for him to sign

 

March 18 1875 Thursday

            At home all day feeding and choring  cold rough and stormey was writing recepts to be ready for Leesburgh creditors_ Washed and greased horse's legg in after noon

 

March 19 1875 Friday

            Frose anough to bear onley in spouty places  I went to Leesburgh through Bowerston to pay Wm Price his dividend  would not sign recpt on account of having the 25 percent in it_ So I left him unpaid  dined with Joseph  wrote letter to JT Campbell inclosing check on Bank  Left schedule with Joseph & Cash $310.00 to pay if any cauld in my abscence  home again dark

 

March 20 1875 Saturday

            More snow  cold & rough  Dressed and put poultice of dry clay lime & fish salt to horses legg  had earley dinner  rode Nance to Leesville  Joseph doing (?) in paying creditors & writing letters etc  Theadore just got home from Pittsb  gave me cash $20.00 he borrowed and cash bal on the A Baker note $21.00  I paying him for the extra bushel oats 50 cts & come & gave cash $90.00 to Joseph

 

March 21 1875 Sunday

            Snowed a skift last night  cold and raw forenoon  clear in after noon & thaw a little  I at home all day tending stock  Mary Fred & Mandey went over to Mikes but Mandy back in time to get me my dinner_  No one here to day  Edward rode Nance to McClains  not back till feeding time  then went after his mother & Fred

 

March 22 1875 Monday

            I went to Leesburgh to day again  I think rode Nance

 

March 23 1875 Tuesday

            At home all day  worked hard and got verry tired  so I could hardley stup & I wrote to First National Bank for 25 blank checks on 24th  mailed letter before I went to Leesville on my way_ put poultice to horses legg again

 

March 24 1875 Wednesday

            Frose almost anough to bear  I went to Leesburgh befor dinner  rode Coley  Busey till I started home at 5 oclock  Expressed money  Howell Paul & sine  Easner & Philips PM Rud Jones Columbus etc  Joseph attended to Theadore in Uhrichville

 

March 25 1875 Thursday

            Chilley & raw  Left for Leesburgh after 10 oclock AM on Coley  put her up at Thea  dined at Joseph_ Busey disbursing till night  Mary Overholts supped with us at Joseph  her to tend theatre in hall  I went myself

 

March 26 1875 Friday

            In town all night with Joseph  a wet morning  late when I got up  rained till after 3 oclock in eve  some unwell but close at businesfs till I started for home after 3  come by way of Bowerston to pay Bloomingdale & Rhine dividend  Esprefs to some others

 

March 27 1875 Saturday

            A fine forenoon  frose last night a little  At home  fix pump spout  barn door & let out cattle & clean out stables etc  Dan Shilts here to sit a while with Mandy

 

March 28 1875 Sunday

            A fine day at home  rode Coley over to look at the Wheat fields  no one here  a dull day  meeting down at ME Church in eve by Rev Stevens

 

March 29 1875 Monday

            A fine day  after doing up feeding Mandey & I rode Nance & Coley to Leesville  Mandey to Cash to pay for goods bot of Rippith & came to amp $4.72 which I paid on 1rst April after or Joseph for me on trade got that day  come home in eve before night  paid some dividends to day as shown schedule

 

March 30 1875 Tuesday

            Weather still improving  getting warm and nice  I went to Leesville 10 1/2 oclock  dined with Joseph _ Wrote to Shober & Railey  paid some dividends as shown on schedule_ This was day of J May sale  Theadore went but bought nothing

 

March 31 1875 Wednesday

            Warm & sultry  after feeding & doing up the chores Ed & I hauled 2 little gags wood from over ledge of Creek where J Weyandt made railing & some corn stalks for beding for horses  after doing that Edward got very sick & faintey_ While at dinner Robert McCourt  rode up to hire  got dinner & his horse fed  I hired him to come on next Monday if he dont disapoint  Mandey & I here be our selves  Mary down at Mikes  Ed quite unwell too  I went to see him after supper
