The DiaryMay 1 1874 Friday A fine mild day The crusades fitted up to go to Bowerston_ Edward come over here to tell about Joseph being on a drunk in Pittsburgh_ But Robert had heard of it in the morning from J. McCain_ Robert made arrangement to leave in the morning to go look for him and Theadore gave him $25.00 of money he took in in Lede's store to bear expences he also took a check he recved on produce from Pittsburgh $17 and some thing
May 2 1874 Saturday A wettish night Robert up early and left for Pittsburgh Joseph Johnson sent kegg butter over in hack to ship to Pittsburgh_ I took 1.00 one dollar out of drawer to pay on New York Tribune to to Mrs. Blackburn I received the 1st Number to day_ Robert Joseph and Clide all returned safe home from Pittsburgh 8 1/2 oclock_ cashed check for Joseph Johnson $46.17 pay at Pittsburgh
May 3 1874 Sunday A cool cloudy day I left for Mastersville after breakfast which was late stayed at home all day shaved took a bath and cleaned up Mandy went home on forenoon bay mare back soon after dinner went to evening meeting & home with Shilts and not back till after night say 9 oclock_ Edward verry sick
May 4 1874 Monday (Written top of Page: Jack McCourt lost rench of sled plow cost 35 cents and lost rench of cast plow week befor cost 25 cts= 60) A wet morning Edward better I some unwell ramained at home till after dinner, then left for Leesville dull thare did not feel like doing any thing gave R.H. the check I got of J. Johnson to mail to Cadiz onley put in letter and left on desk which Johnson mailed next day after we left for Carlton Was informed by Theadore sister Sarah Simonton come to Mastervile from Uhrichville this morning
May 5 1874 Tuesday Robert & I left for Carlton 7 1/2 oclock left our horses at Moodeys 11 oclock First talked with McCoy after dinner with Shober & Railey left orders with printer for adverstising started for home 3 1/2 oclock on arival Joseph drunk become excited advised to arrest him which was done and put under gard for the night Dehafs Joseph Johnson & Theadore at U.S. House Joseph Johnson mailed check I got of him to First N B Cadiz $46.17 Was informed Ed took sister Sarah Simonton to Deersville to day
May 6 1874 Wednesday A fine morning Joseph J Smith still under arrest and quite excited and I got so in reproveing him_ Had to pay J. Lukins $2.50 Dehass & H. Rippeth garding & 3.10 = 5.60 Isaac Price kind enough to not charge his just claim of .60 wont forget his kindness though understood he was some displeased from some remark I made_ W. Dickey of Columbus here to day as also Burrey of New Philadilphia Mr. James Tripe and Johnson could not see an inducement to purchase at any advance over 2/3 Cost of Joseph arrest as follows I. Price Mayor official didnt charge. 60 Dehass official .60 Dehass services 1.00 H. Reppith say 1/2 day 1.50 J. Lukins 2 meals & use of house 2.50 paid in cash by Robert $5.60
May 7 1874 Thursday (Written top of page: Dan Little to large lump Tob 50 cts) Fine day dull forenoon in store the principle trade made by I. Ture in oats & hard soap some cash paid out I went up home with Mr. Colwell Rachel & children after 4 oclock Dan Little to large lump Tobacco worth 50cts he had been plowing in the bottom over the creek
May 8 1874 Friday (Written top of page: F.T. Simontons note of transaction) Looked some cloudey turned out fine day_ I started for Deersville at 9 oclock with Mrs Colwell dined & fed with Simonton_ Drove my own team to carriage_ Left with Finley & Sarah the Receipt for the $2000.00 given me in Cadiz October 15th 1870 with all the reciepts and statement showing me the ballance due on January 31 1874 to be $90.50 for them to investigate to their satisfaction without any acknowledgement whatever
May 9 1874 Saturday Beautiful weather spring come at last every body buisey and the season come at last for sowing & planting Left for Leesburgh with Rachael and children after 9 oclock AM_ arived again 11 oclock_ there bal of day verry dull went back to Mastervill after 6 PM bought 3 yds cambrick for Mandy Barns retailed at 30cts per yd cost ^*cts
May 10 1874 Sunday A beautiful fine day after breakfast rode up to P. Canners for exercise to see the country back before dinner house locked up all over to Brethern Church after dinner Mandy rode bay horse home Ed rode Black mare to Leesville I went to hear Rev Stevens preach afternoon changed my clothes salt sheep over creek cut sheaf oats for feed etc etc Sarah Fierbaugh rode to Leesburgh by house after Mandy started was displeased about her not waiting
May 11 1874 Monday Warm and fine left home soon after breakfast come trough Bowerston nothing done in store, it appears to be intireley forsaken
May 12 1874 Tuesday (Written top of page: to get advice about (tobasee?) lincence service for the store & with regard to compremise) Fine & warm Robert started for Carrollton I got Theadore to cut 2 yds gray waterproof light goods for coat cost 1.00 2.00 got 3 yds gray cassimere 137= 4.12 1 1/2 " light Cambrick for coat .20 1 1/2 " slate corset drill pants 3/8 " bard check 1 yd Black Italian clothe coat 3/4 " Buckram 1 spool B black silk 1 spool white cotton 1 skein black thread or (bath?) cut To sugar & Tea for coiter pr cotten 95
May 13 1874 Wednesday Warm & dry dull forenoon Robert writing letters to his creditors some excited wanted me to go to Cadiz to seek better counsel on Bankrupt law_ I thought not prudent After noon Banker from Columbus here Carlish Wheeling here but nothing definate Though Banker seemed dissatisfied Trade livened up a little with Boutregez (?) Joseph Johnson & Theadore busey for awhile
May 14 1874 Thursday (Written top of page: Dan Little brush .35 & blacking .15 =.50) More cool & pleasant verry dry bargained with bro Colter to make my coat 3.00 & pants 1.15 a dull day lazeid around aranged and counted the money up stairs_ was talking a while with Bill Wilson of Springfield agent for Champion Mower_ Went up to Masterville in eve trough Bowerstown_ Met F.T. Simons there
May 15 1874 Friday gave Edward Cash two dollars to buy seed seed corn $2.00 after breakfast started with Simonton to Conners paid H Strutts girl cash for seed wheat $13.50 equaling $1.43 per bushell for 9 bushells 35 lbs come on to Leesville no trade sold Finley some carpet chain had a May cream party in the grove Sold Simonton 32 carpet chain part of it bought in the other store for him in all of it coming to $12.80 paid cash on it $9.00 leaving ballance due $3.80 nothing more done in store ballance of eve Theadore & Joseph Johnson out looking for oats and hay poor looking getting them
May 16 1874 Saturday A fine day turning cool in evening the carr load corn on hand Johnson & Theadore over at station Theadore hauld 2 loads here verry dull in the store John Boyd & Wife in with little trade Boyd setting J. May & wife in with a little trade but little done I left after night for Masterville quite cold boys in bed Mary at G. Adams sitting up till after 3 oclock Edward reported the corn ground (farkist)? off Mike helped him
May 17 1874 Sunday At home all day onley while at meeting Rev J. Williams preached a good sermon Mike & Sarah took dinner with us Ezra Fierbaugh & two Miss Sheltzes & John Turned out a wet evening
May 18 1874 Monday Wettish day left home for Leesburgh after 10 oclock Ed & Dan went to build board fence I come trough Bowerston met Theadore thare he stayed all day Joseph Johnson went out to look for hay to Duttons got none
May 19 1874 Tuesday A fine day looking over my account all forenoon After dinner went up to Masterville to try trade Ike horse to Doc Goldstine failed and had to keep him & his two horses over night Ed finished planting corn help Mike Jake Huff Rev Limaster & Pebodys boy & sum Johnson
May 20 1874 Wednesday (Written top of page: Dan To 1 large plug Tob pr Ed 75) A wet morning at home last night started for Leesburgh after breakfast with Doc Goldstone who brought me to Rowleys after keeping him & his two horses all night here before dinner Ed come after dinner for load cole for old Mr Beadle Mules & Ike bought a Hat for himself I bought 1 plug Tob for Dan Little cost 50cts
May 21 1874 Thursday A damp cool morning a dull day in town little or nothing done no excitement either but little mail receaved to day I looked over my account a little but done verry little onley read and set around the stove
May 22 1874 Friday (Written top of page: Mandy Barns To cash 50 cts to pay for fixing her parasole) Some frost this morning but nothing to hurt_ A clear fine day but cool I done nothing but read Robert tinkering some at choring between store and dwelling houses
May 23 1874 Saturday A fine warm day_ Started after breakfast to Bowerston for load corn for myself got 7 barrels 125 lb each eaqual 875 lb making 12 bushels 40 lbs paid Theadore cash $10.00 brought it up home got our dinners & horses fed went back trough Bowerston took load to Leesburgh_ I rode black mare come back home after dark J. T. Campbell from Steaubenville trying to negotiate with Robert I met him going to R.R.
May 24 1874 Sunday A fine warm day Joseph Lilley & family here for dinner Frank Smith from over beyond Deersville here last night Mandy rode black mare to tunnel chruch in carr D. Shilts gone all day_ I went to G.W. Ace funeral after 2 oclock a large funeral all went home after
May 25 1874 Monday (Written top of page: Mandy Barns To 56 lb Flour $2.50) A cloudey morning but turned out fine first after breakfast went out to look at stock returned weighed 56 lb Flower for Mandy Barns worth 4 1/2 cts pr lb eaqual $2.50 started for Leesburgh on Ike horse after ariving rode him over to Bowerston for prince for Robert to ride Carlton got off 2 oclock Joseph Johnson tend store after noon J. Trips son in law bot 1 pr slogey shoes_ Ramsburger and Wife here from Levittsville to trade Theadore back from Bowerston in time to get 2 shoes on bay horse Robert not home till 11 oclock night I cut off neck ribbbon for my self 1 1/4 yds marked retail 20cts
May 26 1874 Tuesday Fine dry morning Theadore & Will Watt off at 5 oclock to Carlton_ I gave Joseph Johnson cash for to day $20 in 4 five dol bills out of assinee money_ I gave Edward to buy cole cash out of my own 1.00 one dollar goods got by wife 3 1/2 yds bard nankeen 3 1/2 " table diaper 1 1/8 " bard cotnade 5 " gray dress goods 2 " cambrick Joseph Johnson returned the $20.00 dollars all in 2 dollar bills borrowed on 26th inst sent 137 lb wool home to E. Clendening by Edward comes to 12 1/2 = 17 12
May 27 1874 Wednesday Easterday returned the $5.00 on friday eve I lent J. Easterday with Roberts consent for 1 week cash $5.00 five dollars out of store fund_ A large collection of people gathered in town to see the show_ A good many got swindled out of considerable of money by buying blue pin boxes at 50 cts a peice_ A fine dry warm day at night I was pursuaded to lend Cooper John Robey $100.00 to be paid in next morning but he got swindled out of $90.00 dollars of it which I took his note for wanting an extintion on untill he sells his wool unfortunate
May 28 1874 Thursday A fine clear dry morning J. Johnson returned the $20.00 dollars borrowed out of store fund on morning of 26th inst James Parker & wife here setling and trading this morning setling his and sons notes as marked on inventory slack day I looking over acpts Thead & J. Johnson Took eggs to station in evening_ John Adams in town over night had drove sheep at T. Leggitt
May 29 1874 Friday A verry warm day Theadore went away after chaff gone all day very little done in store I got my gray coat from Cotter
May 30 1874 Saturday Warm and dry Left for Mastersville about 10 oclock to tend Eds trial at Wm Johnstons with Doc Stone compromised by giving $10.00 I thinking it best but a perfect swindle I loafed about the house and salt the sheep over creek Dan went along with me on Jack mule who had not been done hands turn all day not worth his bord
May 31 1874 Sunday I rode out to look at groth of rye sick colt and things and over to Mikes and old Dans then home brother John here from Urichville Mandey wanting mare to ride home Ed drove away to Hanover R.H. & family come in Pines hack and stayed all day with his uncle a light shower of rain about 5 oclock all set for home Dan Little back again at night
