The Diary          

November 1 1875 Monday

            Snowey & Blustry_  After breakfast John McCourt To Cash $25.00 two ten dollar bills & a five on First NB Cadiz  told him I could not afford to keep him any longer at his terms  accord to our calculations he put in one day over the six monts_  I went to Leesvill & out Sir Newtons with Theadore to see his one  back & got my diner with him, had an interview with Robert made arangements to go to Carlton together tomarrow  home before night and went to feeding_  John McCourt did not leave til after dinner  He hated to leave very much

 

November 2 1875 Tuesday

            Up earley  went to feeding  Robert here by day light  after breakfast we started for Carlton in carriage  drove Nance & his Gray mare_ imployed S. Crane  dined with Rue  put in denial to Crims  renewal of answer  Left 15 minutes befor 4 oclock & home again seven olclock  Robert got his supper & went home on train

 

November 3 1875 Wednesday

            A wet morning  After feeding & doing up chors I went to Leesburgh  dined with Joseph  bought 70 cts worth of nails & hinge of L Hunt 50 for 12 lb Nails & 20 for hinge pd him for  gave Joseph Check on First NB Cadiz for $100.00 pay to E.> Smith  come home  Theadore along for bay Filley & he took her right off home with him & I went to feeding,_ It lightened & Thundered after dark

 

November 4 1875 Thursday

            A sloppey damp kind of day,  I at home forenoon  Ed & I hauld three maple loggs from far side of fording  sawed them into back loggs & Ed haul more wood in after noon  was all we done  onley tend to feeding

 

November 5 1875 Friday

            Clearing off for better weather  Ed went at corn  John Corey helping him_  I went to Deersville gave Mrs Caldwell $63.12 dollar  lifted a recept I gave her 24th June 75  dined & fed Coley with Simonton  bought a ped of him at 7 cts per lb & paid him $5.00 on as I was leaving for home  arived before dark  done some feeding  besides bringing up cows_ Robert told me if I would pay Mrs Caldwell the above

 

November 6 1875 Saturday

            A heavey white frost  Ed went out to husk  got sick & quit  After dinner he & I went out after part of load corn which I drove up and unloaded  he quitting  sick again  I went back & brought up a load of soft corn which kept me till night & left it in the wagon under open shed  done some feeding  was all I could do

Robert told me last Wednesday that if I would lift the $63.12         recpt that Mr Caldwell bild  I might keep his bugey  I mereley make note of this

 

November 7 1875 Sunday

            Heavey white frost, but a beutiful day  At home forenoon  After dinner I went to see H. Custer at Aleck Scots_ Back before night_ Theadore passed on his way up to Mrs Englishes bringing me letter from Robert and a piece of cassimer

            got news Joseph did not get home from Pittsburgh till yesterday  was no a drunk again

 

November 8 1875 Monday

            A fine day  I went Leesburgh & back forenoon  Ed sick  Robert come just after on his way to Carlton  Theadore come and stayed all night  Edward took his wife home and Robert & I started for Carlton after 3 oclock  there soon after dark  went out to E.Stonebrooks and stayed with him over night

 

November 9 1875 Tuesday

            Heavey white frost at E.Stonebrooks  left after breakfast  come to Carlton  got J.L. Rue to overhaul old sale book and amend over report of stock goods  at it till after 3 oclock  got readey to start home quarter before 4 oclock.  Expenses for feed mare with John Skeels 25cts  home before 8 oclock in time for Robert to take train to go home  he got his dinner at Vanhorns which I ought to pay

 

November 10 1875 Wednesday

            A wet morning  I at home all day  went to see if I coiuld get I. Masters to grind grist  Ed unwell  looking for fence bords of Mike & I. Heaston  got 17 in evening at schoolhouse  I done verry little but feed all day  it being drisley & disagreeble

 

November 11 1875 Thursday

            A fine day  Ed & John Cory husking  I hauled in a load of Corn and put it in new crib  went back after load of soft which remained in wagon all night under shed

 

November 12 1875 Friday

            A fine day,  After breakfast I gave Harvey Shilts 1 3/4 bus wheat  paid his demand in full  the weat counted at 1.25 pr bushel  left it on the box next stable door till after night_  Theadore come to help  husked till suppper time  took home his express bed full of corn  I helped all I could  got verry weak in back_  got in one load which Theadore threw in new crib before going home

 

November 13 1875 Saturday

            Indicating rain  Ed went to husk  I went to mill  brought home bal of grist_  Fixed & went to Leesburg  paid John W. Price for 5 gals oil & 1 quart dryer $4.95  dined with Rachel, Bot 1 kegg white Lead 25cts 16 lb Oat Meal 1.00  and 2 lumps tobaco 20 cts = $3.70  Turned out a wet evening brought Frank home with me  all safe & well  paid J. Price out of a $20.00 dol bill on F N Bank Cadiz

 

November 14 1875 Sunday

            Wett morning  spent most of forenoon tending stock  Mike & Sarah here for dinner and a while after  A cloudey raw day  I not off of the place to day

 

November 15 1875 Monday

            A mild fine day cloudy,  After breakfast I went to G. Holmes to see Luther  at home bal of day  Ed hauling stone off of fields to chunk fence to keep his hoggs in the place he intended for  there till nearley night when he hauld 1 load wood from lower side of fields_  Luthers cow missing  I walked out over field to look for her  could not see her

 

November 16 1875 Tuesday

            (Written top of page:  Luthers cow had a fine red bull calf last night look below under date of 16th Tuesday)

            Raw & cloudey  I went to Deersville after pigg I bot on Friday  5 inst and got another for Mike  weighed on Deersville scale 232 lbs by Wilsh at 7 cts per lb  comes to $16.35 cash  gave him $11.25 to day & on day I purchased $5.00  started for home at 3 oclock  arived here safe just at dark being verry cold  left piggs in box all night  Sathers cow had a fine bull calf last night  not quite a year since she had a fine heffer calfin stall in stable on Nov 26th  74 a few leaves farther on

 

November 17 1875 Wednesday

            Hard freese and a verry cold day  Mike come  weighed piggs box & all 297 lb box weighing 81  eaqualing 216  Mike weighing grofs again after taking mine out 186 tare 81 = 99 leaving his pigg to weigh 99 lbs for which he gave me $7.00 and leaving mine to weigh 117 lbs net showing an error in the Deersvill scale_  Butchered china pigg  Mike helping befor dinner  weigh 175  I went to Scio after brick to set grate  ordered 50 of the best and 150 of the second quality  for best 50 cts  for second 80 cts = $1.70 not paid

 

November 18 1875 Thursday

            Cold & frosty  Isaac & John W. Heaston come at 9 oclock to help husk corn with Edward  got in 2 loads with my help  the first not verry full, the day turned out favorable_  At night I went to the post office  got a letter of J.L. Rue corespnding with the one Theadore brought me last Tuesday while I was in Dearsville

 

November 19 1875 Friday

            (Written top of page:  Buck to Ewes look below)

            A beautiful day_  Isaac & John W. Heaston helping husk corn all day  got in 2 loads with my help_  I put Buck to the Ewes this morning  I at home all day as busey as I could be loading & helping unload soft corn

 

November 20 1875 Saturday

            A beautiful day  John Henderson helping Ed husk corn all day  done well  got in two good loads_  I went to Leesville  took 1 crock lard & ham to R.H. Smith & crock & shoulder to Theadore_  I got 2 removes on Coley mare behind  toad  35 to be creadited on note_  I got one paper roasted coffee and 6 brown shugar and 1 broom of E.L. Smith not paid for  Joseph on a burst and had gone away before I left and no person that I knew of new whare

 

November 21 1875 Sunday

            Fine day coolish  Sam Smith come on visit yesterday eve  left just before dinner for Mikes_  Robert & family come before dinner  left for home after 3 oclock_  I at home all day busey feeding & tending stock  Joseph followed to Edgefield by Bill Fisher & Allick Stephenson & found at Bill Pitcarns at supper  informed the expense by Fisher would be $5.00  so it goes

 

November 22 1875 Monday

            A beautiful day  Up earley  went to Carlton  Robert along to tend probate court trying to get the money report amended but failed_ Expenses for lunch at Colemans 25 cts rode home in the night seperated from Robert at Brooks_

            Theadore up here helping Ed haul fodder  got up 4 loads_ I paid cash to Robert at Colmans bakery for getting hand spring in my watch  one dollar $1.00

 

November 23 1875 Tuesday

            A wet day from morning till night  I at home all day  fixed stall for calf  cut (new?) and got wet getting lambs in  in evening_

            Edward got 4 removes on Mules at Bowerston by H. Boor & helped me feed

 

November 24 1875 Wednesday

            Fine day for time of year  After earley dinner  went to Leesville  Joseph drunk  Robert went to Uhrichville  Theadore to Cannansburgh  I bought 3 bolts & awl handle for 13 cts  Tobacco of Elida L. Smith  got some hog ringing metirial (?) & come home before night

Ed went to Berneys after cote on Plum Run  also back befor night & helping me feed

 

November 25 1875 Thursday

            Fine day after heavey white frost  John Henderson helping Ed haul fodder  got out 8 or 9 loads for all.  the creek was high and used Nance in after noon_  Robert & Theadore up  left me 3 Factory Shirts  said cost $1.75 each  paid him cash five dollars $5.00  telling him to get me 3 yds pant stuff of J.Price of Hagerstown_  Left after supper taking Frank along just at dark  John Henderson stayed for supper

 

November 26 1875 Friday

            A wet morning  having rained all the latter part of night  I at home all day  receaved a letter from W. Crim dated 23rd demanding money  Ed got it out of post office _  Brought in the lambs  choring & tending the stock  Ed also reding up_  at nearley night Mike come and took away the book sheep  After supper I went down to Eds and told him Widow Shilts cow had been in pasture one month on 21rst Inst

 

November 27 1875 Saturday

            Fine day  Ed turned out widow Shilts cow this morning  hauled up load sand  took 10 bus Wheat & 3 1/2 bus corn to Overholts Mill bot 25 cts worth lime of Wm Penn  back again late dinner_  I got John Henderson to sharp hand Saw & help grind 2 Axes  at it some two hours_  Luther Holmes up here said we had every thing necessary for setting grate  would come on next Monday morning  weather admitting and set it

 

November 28 1875 Sunday

            Wet day  Edward went to Leesburgh after doing up feeding_  I busey most of the day tending stock  Went to hear Rev Swan preach after noon Edward brought good report from Joseph getting his din with him  home in time to help me feed  verry muddy under foot

 

November 29 1875 Monday

            Fine Morning but muddy underfoot_  Luther Holmes here to set grate before breakfast  took him till noon_  Robert & Theadore come after dinner  fixed carriage pole to his buggey_  I gave him $10.00 for to bear expences till he return  When he promised to replace it and started him in good order with Theadores horse & harnefs and gray mare at 2 oclock_  Bal of the evening I put in feeding stock  when it began to turn in cold & freese like every thing =  Reced of Robert on the following Monday 6th Decem in Leesville the above $10.00 I lent him to bear expences

 

November 30 1875 Tuesday

            Hard Freese extreme cold for the beginning  Ed hauled 2 loads cole from S.Thrall 40 bus paid for it as I understood  I hitched to Theadores Exprefs taking Samantha  went to Bowerston Mill for grist after 11 oclock dinner  back in good time for feeding_  Recd letters from J.L. Rue & John McCourt_ I got a $5.00 dol bill changed by Wm Penn in Bowerston
