October 1 1874 Thursday

            (Written top of page: JJ come home this morning looking hard)

            Coolish not up very earley wore over coat all day_ Theadore shipped Eggs & bought butter of Cotter besides of the stores  Joseph come home looking very hard  Robert reproved me about the way I done in selling Tobacco to the Carlton Lawyer who was delivering County Atlass_ I left after dinner for home  Edward was unloading potatoes I brought Fred 5 cts worth gin snaps  Ed hauld load potato tops to put in stabls.  Ed sold grany cow to S Baker & J. Dunlap yestrday or this morning for the low sum of $25.00 dollars

 

October 2 1874 Friday

            A fine morning after breakfast Ed & I went down to his orchard gathered 2 bus aples & come up to garden & gatherd 2 bus peaches which I brought Leesburgh after earley dinner meeting Robert on his way up for some more apples & peaches  I took 6 yds brown bard shirting out of store for Sam Johnston Colrd  he cut tire off fore wheel of old Express .25 before I started to Leesburgh with peaches & app  I got back before Robert left  Edward was plowing down in rockey of oat stuble far end of patato patch_ D Shilts & Mandy back

 

October 3 1874 Saturday

            A fine warm morning  Ed went to sow Rye  I come to Leesburgh and nothing much doing_ I left for home at 4 oclock ariving first at supper time  Sam Johnston at supper had been her  Ed butcher stag weather that was in lot with Muley Buck  nothing more done it being night

 

October 4 1874 Sunday

            A fine morning  after breakfast went to G Holmes to see J Barns of no use  Mansfield not home yet, then went to salt young cattle & sheep  Ed went to McClains for his wife  back before I got in from salting  cleaned up before dinner_ After went to Brethern Meetin  Mike & Sarah with us for dinner_ Robert rode up while we all was at meeting he left for home before supper

 

October 5 1874 Monday

            A sharp white frost this morning  I come to Leesburgh after geting ready  Ed went to look for hand before I left_ I met H Custer here when I come talked a little with him on the assinee matter_ Theadore away all day looking for Butter & Eggs not back till dark It looks some like rain  Edward hired Ben Peterson Colrd but did not commence work till next morning

 

October 6 1874 Tuesday

            (Written top of page:  Moody bill 2 din & horse feed 75 cts)

            A wet morning had a fine rain last night_ After breakfast Robert and I went to Carlton  had an idle trip  the Judge McCoy being in Cleveland  set the next time to go next Wednesday or Thursday a week_ I gave Shober & Raily cash as fees $20.00 and got a recept for $30.00 thirty  back to Leesburgh again 4 oclock after supper went up Masterville  Ben Peferson on hand but I did not learn how he was hired

 

October 7 1874 Wednesday

            Edward took cattle & cart to work on roads after breakfast  Ben Pelus to husk corn  I talked a while with Bill Gundey and then come to Leesburgh met J Buchannan here looking for situation to merchandise_ I wrote a line  to Phillips Shawbaugh by his son that was with John Buchannon  Theadore gone up in the Masterville to look for produce  got some butter & Eggs of his mother & Fierbaugh_ Luther Barrick on his way home from Pennsylvania  I in town all night_ Ed & Ben made cider at V Trusals some 40 gals

 

October 8 1874 Thursday

            A fine morning but cloudey  after breakf I wrote a letter to Cincinnati Gazett Edit requesting cure for horse and mailed stam after setled with Chase & Bill Clark_ Theadore packed 4 Ferkins butter & shiped to Pittsburgh  Bill Adaer in setling  after late supper I went up home  Ed & Ben cleaning up wheat after supper  Ed went to McClains  away all night  I rested poorley and did not sleep well Fred being in bed with us

 

October 9 1874 Friday

            A fine day after breakfast I left for Leesburgh  Theadore hauling graval to fill before Roberts door  I looking around to try to settle some acpt  little or nothing done_ There was some goods sold in the store amount to some $17.00 to the Parkers Tups & Scott  I do no know what Ed & Ben was at to day but informed Ben left at night  Mary giving him cash $1.00 on leaving

 

October 10 1874 Saturday

            A fine morning  Theadore in store  Robert went to Plowmans J.P_ I to Fishers to collect before dinner. after setled with Wm D. Shearer L Robey got his back up and acted any thing the gentleman_ young Boyd John Mays son in law and others in and bought some twenty dollars worth of goods & I think paid for then_ I receaved cash of Robert some $106.00  I left for home about four oclock United Brethern Quarterley meeting on hand_ I gave Mary the cash she paid to the collerd boy the eve before which I collected of C Fisher one dollar $1.00

 

October 11 1874 Sunday

            A fine day Quarterley meeting going on at the United Brethern Church  I at home all day  Robert & family up first before dinner  Edward went after his wife and she stayed all night  Ed was verry sick  Robert and family left after 4 oclock  Mandey had her bough last night & to night

 

October 12 1874 Monday

            Edward took his wife home after breakfast  I left for Leesburgh after he returned  got Mandey shoes 1/2 soaled by J Robey  Cost 60 cts paid in cash to James  Started for home before supper after went down to Mikes stayed there till 9 oclock  he gave me $3.75 on the bushel Lin seed Ed gave him

 

October 13 1874 Tuesday

            A coolish day after breakfast I went to Turneys to see John to hire him  I offer him the rate of $16.00 for 1/2 month said he might come if Cristey did not hire him, then went to New Mar to vote collected J Hines acpt $4.65  left Alick & James English note & Due bill with A Scott for collection then home for dinner & to Leesburgh  suped with Theadore, brought John Robey shoemaker 6 lb Lin seed which he paid Robert for next eve in the changing a $5.00 bill. I slept at Roberts

 

October 14 1874 Wednesday

            A fine morning frosty but turned out a butiful day  Robert & I started for Carlton thare by 1/2 after 10 oclock made affadavid which Railey drew up to get an extension for 75 days which the Judge granted_ Back to Moodeys again dinner expences .75/100 for 2 dinner & horse feed, and back to Leesburg again 4 1/2 oclock stayed till I got my supper then home to Mastervill drove Prince horse  Theadore here on his way Steubenvill  Eds wife here & Mandey bow

 

October 15 1874 Thursday

            A fine day frosty after breakfast took Lesle up to her Mothers & Eds wife to here  home choring around gathering rotton apples & onley while I went up to Jake Wiandts  Ed trashing some Rye & husk corn in after noon  after night I went up to Fouts but all no go for huskers_ The Muley Buck had been among the Ewes at least a whole day

 

October 16 1874 Friday

            Little frosty but a butiful day for husking  Mike & Jakake Huff here all day got in 3 wagon loads corn again  night I got verey tired  Theadore returned from Steubenvill took his team and went to Leeburgh after dinner

 

October 17 1874 Saturday

            (Written top of page: Mandy Barns To Cash $2.00)

            Fine warm & dry  Mike & Jake husking till dinner  I hauled 1 load corn before dinner_ then all quit but Ed he unloaded the wagon & went after bal of corn_ I hitched Cole to bugey & took Mandy home went on Leesburgh got 1 grain shovel of Robert and basket of Joseph which I paid him for .65 did not pay for shovel_ I receavd letter from Agricultural Editor of Cincinatta Gazett about horse paid Mandy Cash $2.00 brought her back again night brought some News papers

 

October 18 1874 Sunday

            A fine warm day  At home tinkering  make preperations for to apply dry loam to horse went up to C Staples old house for the old daubing  John Barns along here to see about hireing  rode Nance in eve after his clothes to set in tomarrow  no one here  Theadore passed for his wife

 

October 19 1874 Monday

            John Barns set in to work at rate of $13.00 pr month he an Ed husking corn  I went to Fouts after breakfast but an idle errand after preparing loam for horse till dinner_ After dinner got up 1 load corn  put poultice on the horse and boys went to husk again till supper

 

October 20 1874 Tuesday

            Fine warm day boys husking  said they got in two loads corn_ Mary & I went to Leesburgh in Express took 1 1/2 bus potatoes to Ed Benadum to pay old debt Mary owed him  she got considerable good of Robert some for Mandey Barns_ a pair of Blankets etc amounting $16.00 got cash of me 50 cts  A French dress pattern for Sarah  Theador away looking for butter & Eggs etc  home before supper_ Ed & John dresing sheep $15.55 on book at R.H

 

October 21 1874 Wednesday

            Beautiful weather  Ed & John went to husk till Ed left to help Bob Law to trash  John remained husk corn got in 1 load after put fresh poultice to horse then went to pick a few apples  come poor speed  after supper went to see Abe Warner to help husk could not come before next week

 

October 22 1874 Thursday

            Fine Morning up early went after Fult Eadey to help husk  he & John husking all fore noon  I took Ed away to take heffer to Shilts bull  missed him  give up putting her so nothing done before dinner by him  I concluded not to go to Leesburgh before dinner_ After dinner went to Leesvill met John Corey going to husk  Eadey husked all day  Cory 1/2 day  I did not get back till after dark  John Barns said they got in 2 loads corn_ paid Fulton Eadey on Monday after 26th inst Cash for this days work .75 cents at his fathers house

 

October 23 1874 Friday

            Find day  Ed John Barns & Corry husking all forenoon  I hauld 1 load before dinner then dressed the horse  John Barns hauld 2 loads after dinner I helped gather up the last load with J Corey kept till after dark makeing 3 loads to day having now taken 13 loads out of the field and 12 of them put in old crib & one in the new or layr crib

 

October 24 1874 Saturday

            (Written top of page: Recd Cash of Robert before starting $159.00)

            Fine morning after breakfast John Barns went to husk alone  Ed to fix some thing at his house  I hitched up to the carriage & come to Leesburgh after dinner  Robert hitched to carriage took wife & two youngest children to B. Forsey then I took Lilly & Carry to Mastervill in their Express wagon home again supper  I understood John Corry was helping John Barns husk only got in 1 wagon load say 26 or 7 bus ears_ Both had left before arived and the watering frofe out of order & from all appearance had not watered the Mules_ This day ended his first week making 6 days  D Shilts here had a trick played by hiding his saddle

 

October 25 1874 Sunday

            A beaufiful day  Protracted love feast meeting at ME. Church_ I at home all day salt stock forenoon & drefs bay horse legg. reading newspaper most of after noon J Barns did not do one turn about the place this day no more than if he was not hired

 

October 26 1874 Monday

            Fine morning up earley went after Fult Eadey to husk corn to day was on hand as also J. Corey when I left at 10 oclock  I found brindle heffer  put her with the other 4 young ones  Mandey found D Shilts Saddle_ overtook J Barr in Hagerstown J. Striker for embezling corn and is going to have trouble  Robert got home in evening by way of Plum run road from his visit to Beal Forscyhes broke fore spring of carriage  boys got done husking & haul in corn  Eadey onley 1/2 day quit after dinner  They paid John Covey by 1 bus potatoes delivered by J Barns  I went up home after supper

 

October 27 1874 Tuesday

            Fine morning  Ed & John went to haul in fodder.  I to dressing horse legg kept till dinner_ Theadore brought home carriage to get his Exprefs & children  got some chaff sheaf oats & corn  after dinner I left for Leesburgh  Robert busey selling some goods & I stayed all night in with him, FT Simonton come to Masterville stayed all night Ed & John got on pretty good with fodder

 

October 28 1874 Wednesday

            Fine morning  Simonton come about 10 oclock dined with Robert Bought quite a bill  Coat blouse pant pattern oil blanket & floor oil cloth axe saw & hatched large Looking Glas & remnan goods for drawer etc etc_ Theadore started to buy good butter & Eggs  I giving him cash $44.00 for a few days_  I demanded the money of LM Robey on his note  treated me harsh  told me to sue him, remained in store till after supper then went up home  Ed said they got in all the fodder but one load  his wife there  Mandey had her Dav

 

October 29 1874 Thursday

            Looking like rain  Mandy first up  after breakfast boys got wash water then started to finish fodder_ I brought in horses & left for Leesburgh  left word not to drefs horse till tomarrow when I expected to be back in Leesvill by 10 oclock giving acpts note etc to Barrick who dined with Robert  I in town all night  changing cold  Watkins Lecture on how Americans talk but had small audiance to hear him

 

October 30 1874 Friday

            Quite cold this morning  First after breakfast went to G. Kails to collect succeeded_ Then home to doctor the horse & take Muley Buck from Ewes  busey all the eve choring around  John Barns hauling wood  Edward & all of the rest of them down papering & fixing his house till night  I at home all night

 

October 31 1874 Saturday

            Cold & raw  John Barns went home after breakfast  Ed took his wife home then went to help old J Heaston trash  not home till near 5 oclock_ I had to hitch to Exprefs & take Mrs Crawford Mary & Fred to Bowerston  I then come on to Leesburgh late in evening got John Barns goods to ampt of $6.85/100 come home trough Bowerston to bring back Mrs Crawford & Mary  not back till dark
