The Diary           

October 1 1875 Friday

            A wet day  John trashing Rye all day  I choring till after dinner when I fixed up to go to Uhrichvi  but did not go_  Ed up here an hour or so fixing gate at barn  I paid out cash to EN. Clendening for RR Ticket 35 cts and did not use it_  Robert come home from Moorfield(?) to day trough the rain  sick

 

October 2 1875 Saturday

            Fine day  John hauling pumkins wood & corn all day  onley while choring  Ed repairing fence around cow yard & down from corner of stable to road  I went to Uhrichvill  bought 1 pr of Boots for Edward $3.75 and 1 pair for Fred $2.00=$5.75 of brother John  dined with him & fed mare at his son Johns  went to Edgefield & priced shingles Cogen for best $4.35 of plain Mill $4.50 & 3.40  back home again night on Coley Mare at no expense

 

October 3 1875 Sunday

            (Written top of page:  Ellon Barnes left us this morning  I took her home & gave her Cash $6.50 see below)

            A fine morning  I took Ellon barns home after breakfast, she having been here 17 weeks, I paid her off in full and fifteen cents over  gave her $6.50 onley owing her $6.36_  I went on to Leesbrugh to see Robert who was sick  Theodore preparing to take Old Mrs English home and bring the children up here  I brought Frank up with me_  At home the bal of the day

 

October 4 1875 Monday

            A fine morning  John & I went to dig potatoes  at it all day_  Edward help a while in after noon_  got in some over 20 bushels, unloaded the wagon bed full after supper by candle light  I got verry tired  it indicating rain  but did not rain much

 

October 5 1875 Tuesday

            Fine day  John & Ed choring & getting load wood to take to John Bowers  John took before dinner  After dinner cutting corn  Edward sowing Lin seed  Mary and I went to Leesburgh taking Fred to see how Robert was  got Molasses barrel of Joseph  he & Clide having gone to Pittsburgh  I got my dinner at Roberts  Mary at Theadores  We got some 7 cuts of stocking yarn of Robert & come home trough Hagerstown

 

October 6 1875 Wednesday

            A fine  forenoon John Ed & I went at the potatoes & finished in the bottom between 2 & 3 oclock  Edward getting the load  It turned out to be a verry wet evening & not much done, John & I went down to the stores after supper expecting to hear a lecture but disappointed on account of the rain

 

October 7 1875 Thursday

            A fine morning after the rain_  John & I went over the creek for load corn on the stalk, Phillip Smitley come to cut corn  got up two loads before dinner  John & Phillip cut corn bal of the day  Ed hauled pumkins the after noon_  I went to Bowerston to see about a girl, I met Theadore there getting some lumber to repair his house  I returned home with Rev McCarthee

 

October 8 1875 Friday

            A fine day though some cloudey  John cutting corn all day, Edward went over to Julia Smith’s looking after grapes but failed, I went to Leesville to robert, I bought crackers & cheese of Joseph to ampt of 65 cts  come home trough Bowerston ariving just as Edward did from Deersville

 

October 9 1875 Saturday

            Fine day  John & Ed hauld cane to J Bowers 2 loads  both teems forenoon  after noon hauling old loggs out of calf lot to build hogg pen for him & salt sheep & looking round cornfield  then went up to J Barns to prospect  John went sparking away all night

 

October 10 1875 Sunday

            A wet day from morning till night  John Mary & I tended meeting fore & after noon  Rev Stevenson forenoon and Rev Swan of Hagerstown afternoon  A small congregation each sermon

 

October 11 1875 Monday

            Cold and frosty after rain  Samantha Hurlefs come while we were at breakfast and I hired her at the rate of $50.00 a year  to have time to do her own Sewing with other privilages in reason  make this place my house her home  John McCourt & Ed went to Bowers to make Molasses made 20 1/2 gal  back soon after 4 oclock  cost of making $3.00 as I understood  I went to Bill Hesses & H Pittingers on my way home got a reproval of Mrs J. Sprowls for coaxing away her girl

 

October 12 1875 Tuesday

            A fine day  coolish  Edw borrowed J.M. Holmes wagon  He & John went to Scio for Shingles I bot of Mr Johnathan Lee  30 bunches making 7 1/2 thousand at $4.45 per thousand  come to $33.37 1/2 agreed to take Wait & Canaga for pay.  voted for Republicans throughout  come home again 2 oclock  John & Ed took shingles over to Leesburgh  home soon after dark & said there was quite a number of people there  Ed said RH was away selling goods

 

October 13 1875 Wednesday

            Hard freese last night  Ed first went to Fierbaugh for the scale and then he & John filled part of 34 sacks with Oats to have them quite full  sewed up & took to station & weigh then  John & I went to bottom for a load corn on stalk for Ed  delivered it to him while I fed cows etc  The 34 sacks of Oats weighed 4282 lbs at 32 lbs to the bushel Eaqual 133 3/4 bus and bill mailed next day to the Firm Wait & Canaga Scio with instructions to Jonathan Lee and then ballance to ramain to my order

 

October 14 1875 Thursday

            Fine day  John & Ed first butcherd mutton then John hauld 1 load wood after dinner hauld 3 loads pumkins  Ed at his hog pen_  I went to Bowerston & Leesville to see about the lath for roofing the store room  After come home  John fixing to go to fare  rode Jack Mule up to D. Fierbaughs  I gave him Cash after he come back $20.00 in 4 bills on Cadiz

 

October 15 1875 Friday

            John up earley and started to Carrolton fare  It turned out a wet day  Ed up here for some bords  I done nothing before dinner  Jerry Carter Colard come here loafing_  After dinner I went to Post Office  chored around & feeding stock with pumkins

 

October 16 1875 Saturday

            Wettish drisley day_  I took ten bus wheat to Mill  Ed helping me fill up & load  John Henderson little girl To 1 bucket flower say 5 lbs = 20 cts_  John returned from fare at dinner time but did not fall into work_  I went to Leesville for pig I got of Theadore for $11.00 dollars  did not pay him for it  home before dark  cut of off logg & help finish feeding  verry cold & raw_  I gave Edward order on Joseph Masters for $7.40 to collect

 

October 17 1875 Sunday

            Cold & raw  After breakfast cleaned up & I went to Leesville dined with Robert  after talking a while come home  house fastened up & all away at meeting_ Put legature on horse after breakfast_ no one here to day onley Mikes Tommy  Mary bringing him here from meeting

 

October 18 1875 Monday

            Cold & raw though looking like clearing up  Ed haul 2 loads cole to day  one for me & one for himself from Zatts bank_  John dig potatoes in garden & finished about 2 oclock  Then he & I hauled two little loads corn from bottom  was all we done to day

 

October 19 1875 Tuesday

            A fine day  John choping & split load before dinner  Ed haul pumkins all day & got done  After dinner I went with croscut saw to help John make some more wood & rails till quitting time and made rather poor head way

 

October 20 1875 Wednesday

            Fine day  I went to Hagerstown to see Howard Shisler about painting house  on to Leesburg  dined with Theadore  got Jim Robey to mind Marys shoe  paid him 10 cts  got A. Baker to put 2 removes on Coley Mare  paid him 30 cts_  John & Ed commenced to husk corn for the first  got in a load & a peice  The corn verry green  I feer it wont keep

 

October 21 1875 Thursday

            Fine weather  John McCourt husk corn all day  I went out before din for a few pumkins  Ed left  The Widow Shilts boys Jerry & Harvey come here while I was watering Mules for straw to put in beds gave Harvey privlage to put his cow in pasture for 1 month for 2 days work  he bord himself & put him in at night

 

October 22 1875 Friday

            Beautiful day  John husk corn all day  along with the two Shilts boys for to pay for their cow pasture_  To 1 bus or basket potatoes  got for them on there way to dinner by John McCourt  to husk corn for_  Theadore & Alick Stevenson come up & here for supper after getting little gag corn in his express

 

October 23 1875 Saturday

            Fine day  John McCourt & Harvey Shilts husk corn all day_  Ed hauling all day  got out 3 loads good corn  H.Shisler here  bargained to put two coats paint on out side of house for $9.00 & to wait 90 days for his pay_  After dinner Julia Smith come on her way from her brothers in Wane County_  I went to Leesville after din to show Shisler the paint  Supered with Joseph

 

October 24 1875 Sunday

            Loveley day, Took Julia Smith home  left 20 minutes before 11 oclock & thare again 1 oclock  drove Nance to Eds bugey  Left Julias at 3 oclock & home a little after 6  made this note while the family went to hear Professor Lee lecture

 

October 25 1875 Monday

            A fine dry warm day  John McCourt & Harvey Shilts husking all day  Ed & I Hauled up 1 load fodder corn & put in barn before dinner  Ed hauld in two loads corn after  one here & one to himself,  Aleck & Nathan McClane come to trash some Rye for the straw  Mary and I went to Leesville after 2 oclock  I to get nance shod but disapointed  brought Joseph Bet Mare home with us after getting our supper with Theadore

 

October 26 1875 Tuesday

            Up earley  Oiled Carriage & Joseph & I went to Cadiz  Prove an idle trip  after we left John went to bottom husked till broke off by rain at 10 oclock  Harvey Shiltz husked till broke off by rain  same time_  I think Edward got out one load & hardley_  Joseph & I got our dinners with John Irish McFadden  it cost me nothing onley my time  had my own oats_  John put in bal of day regulating in barn

 

October 27 1875 Wednesday

            Fine day for husking corn though looking blustery  John husked all day  Harvey Shiltz all day but got a late stare on acpt of getting two bus wheat & taking to Mrs. on gray mare_  Phillip Smitley husk al day under Eds arrangement_  I went to Leesville after earley dinner  Exprefs  takeing Joseph mare home & bring back Cole  took 2 1/2 bus corn  paid for 2 removes on Nance & mending Mary’s garters & 1/2 lb white lump sugar for Fred=(30-25-10)65 in all  And just before starting home I paid A. Stevenson $15.00 for roofing storeroom acmp by M. Price  Wart off of horse this morn when I first saw him

 

October 28 1875 Thursday

            A beautiful day for corn  John husking all day  Harvey & Jerry Shilts husk and I dont know how they intend doing  Theadore come up in his express to husk  brought Aly along  Ed hauling first load soft corn  thrown in barn  second put in old crib_  The Shilts said they put in one day husking  quit before 2 oclock & went to pick hickory nuts_  Theadore loaded his express with corn & left at 4 oclock

 

October 29 1875 Friday

            Fine day  John husking all day  Ed husked till after 2 oclock or 3 oclock  I went to Scio for shingles  got 6 bunches of J. Lee of J.T. Grace  one bunch being deficient nearly 1/4 would be 25 cents left full value  I told M. Canaga to settle with M Lee for the 5 3/4 bunches at the rate of $4.45  would be about $6.00  back home half after one oclock and as soon as I got my dinner took team out to Ed and he got in two loads corn  the last was soft and not quite full

 

October 30 1875 Saturday

            A wet morning  John sorting potatoes till dinner  I choring  fix at hog pen & put hatchet handle in old axe to cut corn etc etc  After dinner John & Ed butchered sheep & gathered in some corn  I went to Leesville with 5 bunches shingles_ got 4 Keggs store paint  1 kegg white lead of Joseph & 3 gals flaxseed oil & 1 gal carbon oil paid him $5.25/100 five dollars & twenty five cents  come home before dark  verry cold_ John dressed up and went sparking  away till after 4 oclock in morning

 

October 31 1875 Sunday

            A cold morning  in bed till 7  Samant first up  I fed some  John helped  Mary & Ed went to Leesville to Mifs F.Dempster funeral_  I at home all day  John dressed up & tending the meetings  Samant went after dinner  a lonely day here  no body come
