  Doc McGavran authored a 60 page book entitled A Brief History of Harrison County  which records the early history of Harrison County, Ohio from its incorporation in 1813 until 1894, when the book was published. Also included in the volume are illustrations of important buildings.
 
  McGavran was born in 1847 in Conotton, Harrison County, Ohio to William H. and Elizabeth Brown McGavran. His father, a farmer and cabinetmaker, served in the Ohio Legislature during the Civil War. After beginning his medical education in Scio, McGavran attended the Cleveland Medical College, graduating as valedictorian in 1872. He established a successful medical practice in Bowerston, then later moved to the county seat, Cadiz. (Puskarich Public Library: http://www.harrison.lib.oh.us)

"Dear Cousin
I have looked till my eyes are sore for you people to pay us a visit this summer but no came. Have you had the flue yet. Mae had a siege of it here but Frank and was not very bad. It is on the decline in and about Deersville. Verry bad at Bowerston now three young men of the same family buried yester. Well the war is over and Ohio gone dry ain't that something great to be thankful for. bro Billie had a terrible siege this summer of Typhoid Feever. I had to be up there quite a good bit. Belle's little girl died. Bille is talking of coming down to Harrison Co. to live. Give my love to all. Come when you can and write soon. Your cousin Mrs. Frank Smith"
