The Diary

September 1 Tuesday 1874

            warm dry & dustey left Leesburgh after breakfast for home trough Bowerston expecting to meet Abe & Frank Smith bringing their wool to Mansfield but they doged me and did not call so I am disapointed_ Edward harrowing  I think got done  I went down to town after 2 oclock where Mansfield inform me Abe Frank & I Patterson receaved all the pay for their wool & left for New Market_ After I come up home Mary went down to Sarah I mind Fred mend halter & wash bridal etc.

 

September 2 Wednesday 1874

            Warm & verry dry  after breakfast Edward took Mules to Fierbaugh to trash  took all day constant_ I rode Coon Mare to Ben Sells & Francie Brooks to hire young Sells & buy Lin Seed of Brooks bot 1 1/2 bus for $3.75 pr bus $5.62  paid cash had some sorrel seed in, after bot 1 bushel of Wilson in Masterville for $4.00  When that done I went over to Mikes for some veal and Mary got some and hour or two before that_ J Barr there to stay all night  Had an election of officers in UN. Church

 

September 3 Thursday 1874

            Warm & dry  I went to Leesburgh  RH & Theadore packing Eggs & Butter got done first before 12  Robert took it over got Dispatch from JJ Smith Lewisville Kentucky wanting 30.00  Theadore got A. Baker to Shoe Coley Mare all round new shoes  I gave him the cash to pay for $1.50  After supper I come home trough Bowerston  Robert coming to write in answer to JJ Smith_ Then to go over to Hagerstown for Butter & Eggs  A fine little shower this night the first for a long time here

 

September 4 Friday 1874

            A damp cool morning  up early  Edward & I to go to Cadiz to take out letters of administration for Edward our expenses 10 cts for cakes  I paid 10 cts for Oil Glesirmer? & 20 for Cloride of lime in all for me 50 cents  A McCormick charged Ed 50 cents for standing Mules in his stable A McCormick & I went on Eds bond for $150.00 Home before or about 6 oclock, but Edward got quite sick, after supper I gathered up NE Clendening E Willit JM Holmes as apraisers before Wm Johnston JP and executed the appraisment of note at $600.00 too much under the ciucumstances

 

September 5 Saturday 1874

            Cloudey indicating rain  Ed went to Cadiz on Coley mare to finish executing his administration papers_ I went over to Abe & Frank Smith to exchange mares & collect money I receaved of Abraham H Smith $80.00 which I gave him recpt for also taking a coppey of it I was home after 5 oclock had a nice shower between D Fierbaugh & home_

 

September 6 Sunday 1874

            Warm & Sultry at home all day  salt sheep & young cattle  Ed & Fred away all day at Bowerstown & Lees  Theadore & childron come before dinner stayed till after 5 oclock  Mandey come home with Edward in time to milk and after night David Shilts cauld in  how long he stayed I could not say  Theadore informed me J.J.S. returned yesterday on noon train from the West

 

September 7 Monday 1874

            A slite shower of rain  Edward borrowed as I understood 6 bus wheat of J Holmes and commenced sowing back of Phillips_ I was choring around till after dinner when I put cloude of lime on horse and left on Beck Filley for Leesbur  I done nothing after coming down but look over the paper_ Theadore hitched up Philley with Prince to Bowerston for some things for Joseph said she done well_ I receaved after night of Theadore $35.00 thirty five dollars which I entered in inventory book_ It is a very warm night

 

September 8 Tuesday 1874

            In Leesburgh slept at Roberts  after breakfast Theadore started out to look for butter & Eggs  gone all day  said filley done well, Joseph got on bender soon after dinner caused some agetation_ I started for Masterville on Rone Mare at dark for home_ Edward had Dell Holmes helping him clean seed wheat but got as much more seed of Holmes as finished field next to Phillips  cauld it Todd wheat_ I wrote to sister Sarah by McKneney about booking gaz

 

September 9 Wednesday 1874

            A fine morning  Edward finish drilling in field nex old sheep house  Then went to drill some for JM Holmes after choring around bal of day_ I rode Coley to Leesburgh  Joseph seemed to have stratened up  Theadore out all day for produce  Baker put new shoe on Coley for one lost off on Saturday last  I come home in eve after supper  bought Fred 5 cts worth ginger snaps

 

September 10 Thursday 1874

            (Written top of page: $4.17 & 1.73 garter before 2.75 in all $8.65)

            Not so warm this morning  a poor wanderer with music organ cauled for breakfast_ Edward weighed 1 bus Lin see for Mike & took it to him  Jake Huff come to see about it  After an earley dinner Mandy & Sarah went to Leesburgh, a picture man came in for dinner immediately after they start  I then went to Leesville, Edward choring around  Mandy got good at Robret to ampt of $4.17/100 & at Josephs to ampt $1.73 in all Eaqual to $5.30 five dollars ninety cents_ We all left for home late after suppering with Robert_ I paid cash out in Mandys bill $1.00 as shown on RH book

 

September 11 Friday 1874

            Dry & warm Edward cut up corn back of garden  I choring round got shoe on Nance paid 15 cts for and took Peabody bac home & bot up sack flower before dinner  after dinner went to see Johnson Butterfield to here him  met Isreal Green & family, sent home J Green  Navin on the horse so went the day nothing made nor done but verry warm trough midle of day_ Edward went to hire J Plowman

 

September 12 Saturday 1874

            Warm & dry  after breakfast went to Leesbrough Bowerston & after dinner down to Esqr Barricks  gave him an accoiunt on BW Price to collect  set next Wednesday at 3 oclock for heairng  Robert had been selling some goods to J Boyd & Hazey and Young Coffee took away a pr of boots_ I left for home af late supper  Edward had been haul 1 load stone for J Peabody & a load of refused ties home for his days work

 

September 13 Sunday 1874

            Alarmingley dry  Edward went after Plow & brought him along  I at home all forenoon  salt sheep & young cattle  Ed & Mandy had earley dinner & went to Leesburgh  I dined at Mikes  Joseph & family & Calhoon & family there for diner also Jesse Plowman minding house while I was at Mikes  I returned soon after dinner made entry in Diary  read some and so I spent the evening

 

September 14 Monday 1874

            Jesse Plowman sit in to work this morning  commenced to cut up corn with Edward  I went to Carlton to see Shober & Railey to get one of them to tend trial with B.W. Price and advice about giving Hunt & Price note up to Doc Stepenson which I did when I returned to Leesburgh about 5 oclock, I left mare and got dinner at Moodeys paying 5 cts for din & feed  returning back to home that eve after dark

 

September 15 Tuesday 1874

            Looking some like rain  did rain a light shower  I helped Theadore home with his cow and then he put out towards Levittsville after butter & Eggs_ After dinner I went to Plowman to leave the Berney acpts & others then home again Ed & Jessey cut corn all day if I recollect right

 

September 16 Wednesday 1874

            Warn dry & dustey after breakfast Jesse & Ed went to cut corn_  I hitched to Eds bugey & come to Leesburgh  Robert & Theadore pack Eggs & made shipment before dinner  After 1 oclock Robert & I went to Sherridville to tend law suit with B W. Price cauled jury of R Legitt, Wm Leepur_J. Pearch, H. Barrick_ A. Braun time set for Monday 21st 11 oclock back to Leesburgh  I stayed there all night  Robert Berney come while we ware away and payed Theadore (his son) Mathew acpt $9.10 which He recept for

 

September 17 Thursday 1874

            After breakfast I hitched up got grocer of Josh for mother  went to Plowmans to tell him not issue on ML Berneys acpt as his father come here & paid it then home, met Edward & Mandey on his way to be married to Sarah McLean (repeated) on his way to be married to Sarah McLain  put away mare & Bugy  Fred & I went to call Jesse to dinner_ Put in the afternoon reading choring etc till the weding party come acompanied by Mike & Sarah and Nate McLane I believe was all  was seranaded a little but not bad  Inform next day Joseph left for parts unknown bought ticket for Columbus is last Theadore could find out

 

September 18 Friday 1874

            Alarming dry after breakfast took oxen for load green corn stalk & all Jesse went to cutting up Edward riged up for Leesburgh  I chored round till din then gathered up bugey bed full of peaches  brought to Roberts  met Edon his way back  I unloaded got 1 Doz 1/2 gal Glass jars and home in time to get up cows  Ed & wife staying at Mikes all night Mandy sick all day & Sarah Tom sick

 

September 19 Saturday 1874

            Jesse went to cut corn  Ed to take his wife home  Mary and Fred to see Tommey  I to Leesburgh on black mare  I put Nancy & Fike before I started in the stable nothing done in store either in selling or setling to amount to any thing so I started home in storm after 5 oclock had a nice shower of rain though more wind than rain

 

September 20 Sunday 1874

            At home all day salted sheep & young cattle  No company to day onley JM Holmes come for basket of ripe peaches_ Jesse rode Nan for change of clothes to J Bowers D Shilts come in eve before supper to see Mandey stayed late

 

September 21 Monday 1874

            (Written top of page: Cash to Jury in BW Price case $3.00

            Quite a frost for the first  Ed & Jesse put the two oldest calves over the creek  I stayed to help then hitched up black mare to Eds bugey & come to Leesburgh  after earley dinner went to Sherrdville to tend trial with .B W Price & D Sherrod - Price beat us_ I paid cash to Shober his fees $10.00 as demanded in pressence of Robert and then no change for recept it being out on the road before the verdict was given_ after the decesion I paid the Jury I had change $1.75 and Robert $1.25 makeing $3.00  Then commenced the D Sherod case it being a contentious one  when over all left without the justices decision he wanting to over haul the books to satisfy him_ I employed Isaac Price to attend the Sherod case which he done well

 

September 22 Tuesday 1874

            In Leesburgh all night another frost  after Robert started for Cumberland with black mare & bugey to collect gone all day did not get 1 red  Theadore tending store but little done, Joseph Chaddock here wanting to see Rob  Phillip Parker cauld me to tell me he got some money for to have credited on his note_ Robert told me he would settle with I Price cash for postage stamp postal card & stationery to ampt of $2.75

 

September 23 Wednesday 1874

            Dry & more moderate_ First Phil Parker come in and paid cash on his acpt $7.00 & on his note $43.00  Eaqualing in all $50.00 whichI kept with Assinee funds_  THeadore started out after butter & Eggs hired Wm Clarks express wagon_ Rob & I took ours to J Moreland to cut (li?) & band 3 hubs which he agreed to do for fifty cents a tire and band for 10 cts  Grant Clark fixed in peice of (willow?) _ Calhoon & wife got home from Cincinnati this forenoon telling Robert he saw Joseph last evening in the city

 

September 24 Thursday 1874

            Warm & dry J.T. Campbell of Steub cauld in this morning on his way to Cumberland_ Theadore went Hagerstown for but & Eggs_ I went to Barricks for the store Books which he had dowwn there back befor dinner but little done in store  I stayed in Leesburgh all on recollection I come up home in bugey_ Edward had been diging potatoes had big wagon bed full at seller doors_ Theadore come up for some chaff had Clide along I brought home with me 1 box axali grees 10 cents worth of castor oil and a little oil can_ 17 cts in say 40 cents

 

September 25 Friday 1874

            Warm and dry after breakfast Ed & I put wagon load potatoes in seller  Ed hitched to carriage & took his wife to New Market  I took butter & eggs to Leesburgh to pay Joseph for glass jars & grocers which Theadore settled and sent his mother cash besides $1.42  I come home in eve trough Bowerston bringing McGavan to gate  Ed home earley in evening

 

September 26 Saturday 1874

            Still warm dry & dusty  Ed went to dig potatoes  said he dug some 12 bushels  I rode Coley to Leesburgh to day  settled with J. Moreland for culling tire on express wagon put on some bands etc amounting to $2.50 credited on his note  after I come home in evening & yet no acpt of Joseph

 

September 27 Sunday 1874

            Had a fine rain last night & rained all forenoon steedy_ After dinner I went to Mikes a while & then Sarah rode up here_ Edward went to see his wife on Jack Mule I kept black mare in to night  The others all got into Fierbaughs medow

 

September 28 Monday 1874

            A wettish like morning. It took me till late breakfast getting horses & Mules out of Fierbaughs medow  Edward most of day repairing fence  I was choring around till noon  Mandey rode Nance home I met her coming back with little Will  I rode bay horse to Leesvill to show him to the Doctors_ I receaved sixty cents of Barrick to pay Hold for summons & Deed In Leesville over night  heard veterrnary lectur  dident amount to much  Theadore away all day looking for butter & Eggs

 

September 29 Tuesday 1874

            A fine morning  rather cool wrote a recept out of Doc DeWills recpt book  Then receaved acpts from Mockaman & Dougherty  John Boyd here to sell 2 bus wheat for cash  After dinner I rode Fike to Doc Lawthers after sup  I went up to Mastervill  I receaved of Dan Fierbaugh cash to pay J McCoy $5.00  I took to Mary 4 1/4 yds water proff cloth cost 50 cts  I paid cash for Tobaco 15 cts to Lida  Then come home late

 

September 30 Wednesday 1874

            First after breakfast I went down to the station to tell Robert to enquire of JM Estep how the suit went come up and come to Leesburgh  D Shilts got Eds bugey to take Mandy to New Phil this is the day of Reunion of G Ridgem  dull nothing doing in town  Robert not home till after 10 oclock he & Lilley had to walk from station cool all day wore over coat  cotter sewed button on _ Sold Hagey vest patter for dollar which Hensley said was cheap  he borrowed Theadores over coat to go to Cumberland  Ed sold old granny cow & calf to Sam Baker & J Dunlap for $25.00 to day makeing the calf within a week or so of being 3 months old
